SOUTHERN DEMOCRAT April 1927 AN OLD CONFEDERATE STILL ACTIVE W T GUNTER of Brooksville who is now 82 years of age, was in town last Thursday to get his pension warrant and called at The Democrat office. Mr Gunter is still active and plows a mule that is 36 years old which he has owned for 31 years. He was also wearing a hat that he says he has owned and been wearing 27 years. he has kept it clean and it presents a neat appearance after these many years of service. SOUTHERN DEMOCRAT Feb 14, 1929 OUR VETERANS With the printing of Blount County's list of Confederate Pensioners brings to mind more vividly the rapid thinning of the lines of Gray. Within the past few years the number has been diminished by more than half. Of the 20 Veterans with us we find all to be between the ages of 82 and 90. S W Burnett has the distinction of being Blount's oldest Veteran. 90 years old this past December. W D Byrum is the very youngest, being 82 Dec 23rd, but with 5 others he must share the honor of being in their 83rd year. Undated, Southern Democrat 20 VETS LEFT IN BLOUNT Seven Are From County; Only One Confederate Bachelor Oneonta, Ala, Feb 22 - Of the 20 surviving Confederate veterans who are residents of Blount County, five volunteered in Georgia, one in Virginia, one in Tennessee, while seven of the remaining 13 who volunteered in Alabama, were from Blount County. The only Confederate veteran bachelor on record in Blount County is W W Born, who markes his home with a niece, Mrs. Mary Cochran of Blountsville. Mr Born was born in Gwinette County, Ga. May 2, 1842, and entered the army Oct 20, 1862 at Savannah. His hearing was impaired during the service, otherwise he escaped injury. SOUTHERN DEMOCRAT no date I.T. BARNETT DEAD News has reached here of the death of Isaac T. Barnett, at his home on route 1, Liberty, last Friday. Mr. Barnett had been in failing health with a complication of diseases for several months. The deceased was about 82 years of age and was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. He was good man and a good citizen. Mr Barnett was a Confederate Veteran and served with distinction through the war. He is survived by his widow and three sons. The funeral services were held at Brooksville where the remains were laid to rest. SOUTHERN DEMOCRAT Dec 1927 W H ELROD, an old Confederate Veteran, who lives on R2, Altoona, called to see us last Saturday. Mr Elrod is in his 84th year. He is a native of Hall County, Ga., but has been living in Blount County since the close of the War Between the States. He married Miss Dicie Underwood in 1862, and raised a family of ten children, six of whom are still living. Mr Elrod says he has 77 grandchildren and 69 great grandchildren.
