    3. hello blount county researchers... i make a concerted effort to only post messages relative to researching in blount county, but something has come to my attention which warrants a momentary divergence and i beg your indulgence for the rest of this message.... i have received more than one message over the last few weeks from some subscribers to the list asking about a virus that seemed to be coming from my computer. i even had one concerned subscriber to write and tell me to stop posting messages. he went on to say he was unsubscribing to the list because of a virus in his computer he believed came from me. of course, i don't want to be responsible for something like that... please bear with me while i share the following email i sent this morning to Robin Amerson, a concerned AL-Blount subscriber..... Dear Robin... no i didn't send anything like that. however, you are not the first to write me and tell me i was sending out a virus with my email. because of the problem i thought was my fault, i went out and bought the expensive version of Norton Anti Virus and ran it on my computer a few months ago, but it came up negative and free of viruses. here's what i suspect has happened: i routinely send research-related messages about updates to the Blount County Site to the AL-Blount repeater to send messages to everyone who subscribes to the list. when subscribers check their email, the message with my email address is downloaded into as many folk's computers who subscribe to the list. at that point my email address is automatically added to some of the subscriber's address books because of the way their software is set up. if any of those several computers is infected with that particular virus, it will replicate itself and send itself out to others on the host's email address book disguised as a message from some random member of their address book....sometimes me. here's another reason it's probably not my computer perpetuating the virus: i use a Macintosh G4 the operating system of which is largely immune to the types of viruses which infect the PCs that most everyone else uses. however, because of the potential that i am a "carrier" i will continue to monitor my machine with Norton Anti-Virus and recommend that everyone else do the same. please let me know if you continue to receive messages of this type with my return email address... kindest regards, robin >Hi Robin, > >This is Robin Amerson and I rec'd an email earlier today that was addresses >from you but I don't think you send it.
