What Powell's are you looking for? Frances
Do you show a Rebecca Powell born born 1770 died February 4, 1851 OR James Powell born September 9, 1759 died January 14, 1855 buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery? Rebecca was a Bynum. If they were part Cherokee, some members of the family would have been sent on the "Trail of Tears". There are many lists of those who were involved. Look up Trail of Tears or Cherokee.
I don't show any Powells buried at the Mt. Moriah Cem. near Fridays crossroads. There is an older Mt Moriah that is now abandoned. I do show some Bynums. Isaac Bynum 1833-1890 Mary Jane Bynum 1831-1881 Gene Bynum 1908-1963 Opal Bynum 1913-???? (Gene's wife)
Ron in CA: It is now Murphree's Valley. My Mom & Dad did a lot of fruit work also. I remember cutting "cots" (apricots) as well and I can still smell the sulfur. Guess they don't do it that way anymore, but something I will never forget. Have a cousin lives in Sacremento now and has for years. Last being Barto. My "bio" father died there in 1992, last name Jennings. Really get to be a small world after all. Well Frieda, I live right dab smack in the middle of Easley and have for the last 40 years. I've heard about the Amersons and their families over the years. I was born in Oakland, California and still have cousins living in Sacremento and San Diego and Fresno and Santa Barbara. I have lived in San Jose, Gilroy, Redding and several other places I can't remember. My Mom & Dad traveled ALOT! There are still some families by the name of Berry and Amerson and Hallmark and Holder and Easley and a whole heep of Bynum's, Cornelius' and Allgood's and Murphrees. The other side of Ed's family are Moore. Now I could write a book on them, it would make the best soap opera. lol Ilene By the way lets just email each other instead of going through Rootsweb. efaulkne@otelco.net hagn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frieda" <fjgb@sbcglobal.net> To: <alblount@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 29, 2006 9:11 PM Subject: Re: [ALBLOUNT] Murphree and Bynum Family Reunion, 1896 > Sounds good to me. Well, talk about coincidences. I was just an hour ago having a virtual tour of Easley on the web site for it. it is here:http://www.800alabama.com/travel-tools/virtual-tours/ you both might enjoy what they have there. I did. Ilene, I am in Sacramento nowasays, but have lived in each and every one of those California towns you mention. My mom did waitress and fruit work to get us raised up. Lotsa moving with that too. Oh yes, there was a place in 1862 called Murphree's crossroads or corners, I forget which, where my gr grandpa and his older brother joined up with the 28th Alabama Inf. as it was being formed. Those families must have been there nearly at the start. ron in CA -----Original Message----- >From: Ilene Faulkner <efaulkne@otelco.net> >Sent: Aug 29, 2006 9:27 PM >To: alblount@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [ALBLOUNT] Murphree and Bynum Family Reunion, 1896 > >Well Frieda, I live right dab smack in the middle of Easley and have for the >last 40 years. >I've heard about the Amersons and their families over the years. >I was born in Oakland, California and still have cousins living in >Sacremento and San Diego and Fresno and Santa Barbara. >I have lived in San Jose, Gilroy, Redding and several other places I can't >remember. Susan, I had never heard anyone say for sure, but it would certainly explain a lot about the physical characteristics from that side of my family! Please let me know if anyone responds to you with details on that. I'd love to exchange info or hear what they have to say. I'm related through my dad's family. Sounds good to me. I belong to the Hallmark family. George Hallmark and Leanah Mynatt to Mynatt Hallmark and Mary Calvert to Wilborn W. Hallmark and Amanda Melvina Easley daughter of Daniel Easley and Eudoxia Brindley down to my Great Grandmother Eudoxia Kezia Hallmark. Daniel Easley is grand son of Solomon Murphree. Eudoxia is related to most the Brindley's at that time. Eudoxia married Amos Young Amerson son of Benjamin Jasper Amerson and Elizabeth Mc Donald. I have not proven Benjamin's parents but believe he was born in South Carolina. Elizabeth McDonald was the daughter of William McDonald and Frances Lewellan (Lewelling). William McDonald was son of William McDonald and Rachel Holder. I am related through Daniel Easley to the Murphree's. Both trees were in Blount Co., by 1818 and some before. After the Civil War Wilborn and Amanda Melvia Easley Hallmark lost their home in Oneonta. Wilborn died and the Sheriff bought the Hallmark home for Taxes. Elizabeth Amerson McDonald was living in Blount Co. near Easley when son Amos came home from the Civil War. Five of Elizabeth's sons had died in the Civil War. My Great Grandfather was the only remaining Son. He Married Eudoxia Kezia Hallmark and Eudoxia's remaining family, Amos, his mother Elizabeth McDonald Amerson and her two Grandsons John Bridove Amerson and Benjamin Gilmore Amerson moved to Dry Creek Lawrence Co., Alabama and were all there until after the 1870 census. Then Amos, Eudoxia and part of both families moved to Iuka, Tishomingo Co., Mississippi. Some of the remaining families move to Mississippi also. Elizabeth and Benjamin's sons were John Gilmore Amerson married to Orleana (1850 Census). William McDonald Amerson married to Julia Ann Hawkins, Benjamin Amerson married to Fernetta Berry, Riley Jasper Amerson married to Mary (Unknown), and W. Barton Amerson. Daughter was Elizabeth Amerson and Frances (Fanny Amerson ) Fanny was married to William Salyers 1861 January 1 in Blount Co. I have seen Tapley Bynum in many of my papers. My other side of my fathers family lived in Jefferson Co., Alabama until about mid 1850's then went to Iuka, Tishomiingo Co., Mississippi, I live in Placentia, Orange Co., California. Frieda: I hope you are talking to me. If not you still get the input. I am married into the families. My husband Ed Faulkner, is related to all four of the families and there are not too many of those left. He is a direct decendant of Tapley Bynum, trunk of the tree. Now from there I would have to consult my books, I have traced it enough times I should remember by heart, but I don't, have to look it up every time, if you need it, I will look it up for you. We live here in Oneonta , so we see alot of the families quite often. I don't think that we have talked before, so its good to meet you. Does anyone know when the reunion will be held this year? Or have they already had it? ----- Original Message ----- From: <bobwonda@hiwaay.net> To: <ALBLOUNT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 24, 2006 9:02 PM Subject: [ALBLOUNT] Murphree and Bynum Family Reunion, 1896 > The Blount County News-Dispatch, 4 Jun 1896 > > Reunion of the Murphrees and Bynums. The Blount County News-Dispatch, 14 Jan 1892 A True Story. The following true story was related to me by my mother, who is 76 years old and who is one of the oldest settlers of Blount county, Ala., having gone there in 1816. On the 25th of October, 1824, a company of men went to a place about three miles north of Blountsville, on Brindley Mountain, for the purpose of killing deer. It was a place where there had been a hurricane, and the timber was nearly all uprooted, twisted off and broken, had had lain there until it was thoroughly dry. It was also a place where deer were known to resort. There were eight men and they decided to make a ring fire, thinking that they could kill several deer before the fire closed up; but alas for the shortsightedness of man! The timber was so dry and burned with such rapidity, they were very soon surrounded with fire and hardly knew what to do. James Scott, Wallace Jones and a man named Eberly ran through the fire and were not much burned; Patrick Scott, better known as Judge Scott, Giles Jones, Richard Nation, and Joe Brooks climbed a high tree and were not very badly burned, and Judge Scott badly burned, but all of them escaped with their lives. This occurred about seven years after the county was settled, and of course is stale news, but I give it for its antiquity, and I have penned it hoping it may interest some of your readers. I derive much pleasure in reading the letters in The Blount County-News Dispatch, especially the Florida letters and those written by my old and esteemed friend Captain Frank Burns. This is written by a homesick and lonely lady. Fort Payne, Ala., January, 1892. [Note: The homesick lady from Fort Payne did not identify herself or her mother. Patrick Scott was born about 1786 and died 1869; buried in the Salem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. No monuments for any of the other men were found in Blount County except for Frank Burns who was buried just south of the Blountsville cemetery in 1909.
The Blount County News, 30 Jun 1881 It is with heartfelt sympathy for the family, that we announce the death of Dr. J.T. Murphree, which sad event occurred at his residence near Balm, on the evening of the 21st inst. In the prime of life, ardently attached to his profession, and full of sympathy for those suffering from disease, his loss is indeed a rare affliction. He died of typhoid malarial fever, no doubt contracted in the discharge of his professional duties. He was interred with Masonic honors on the 22d inst. Walnut Grove, Ala., June 25, 1881. Mr. Editor-We had a fine rain on the evening of the 21st inst., and farmers are looking serenely happy. The crops look very promising. Our town was shocked, amid the rejoicing over the rain, by the sad news of the death of the much esteemed Dr. James T. Murphree, caused by typho-malarial fever, contracted no doubt whilst rendering medical aid and relief to Mr. W.A. Murphree and family. I heard more than one man say, "The poor man's doctor of Murphree's Valley is dead." He was a man whom to know was to love. Col. John H. Campbell, the very efficient W.M., of Walnut Grove Masonic Lodge, at the request of the friends and relatives of the deceased, called the Mystic Band to assemble at 10 o'clock, A.M., on the 22d inst., to make preparation for the interment of the esteemed brother. The members assembled in Walnut Grove Hall, and from thence proceeded to the church near John D. Amberson's and deposited the mortal remains of the esteemed brother in the silent tomb, with the honors of the Craft, "Peace to his ashes!" The bereaved family have the warm sympathy of the people of Murphree's Valley and the surrounding country. W.A. Murphree and family are all sick with fever, with this exception the Valley is healthy; his friends and neighbors have kindly worked Mr. Murphree's crop. The Blount County News, 13 Jul 1881 Tribute of Respect. Walnut Grove Lodge, No. 263, F.&A.M., at its regular Communication held on June 25th, 1881, passed the following preamble and resolutions: Whereas, in obedience to the Divine summons of our Grand Master, the ruler of all things, our worthy brother, Dr. James T. Murphree, departed this life on June 21st, 1881, in the prime of his life. Resolved, That in this sad and unexpected bereavement Walnut Grove Lodge, No. 264, F.&A.M. has lost one of its most devoted members, our community one of its most deserving citizens, the church an acceptable member and his family has sustained a loss that to them is irreparable, but to him a gain, and as brethren of the deceased, we tender to the family of our brother our deepest sympathies in this their great affliction. Resolved, That a page in the Secretary's book be left blank as a memorial and to commemorate his many noble virtues. Resolved, That the members of this Lodge wear the usual badge of mourning for the next thirty days. Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be furnished the widow of the deceased; also a copy to the editor of The Blount County News, with a request that he publish the same, J.E. Murphree, Secretary. Walnut Grove, June 25th, 1881.
