Depends on the direction that you are coming from. These cemeteries are adjacent to each other, seperated by a street (Alabama Ave.I think). From the intesection of U.S.Hwy.231 and State Hwy. 75 in Oneonta go South on U.S.231 about one block, turn left onto second avenue. Go about a quarter mile, you will pass Woodland Park on the right and Alabama Power on the left. When you reach Oneonta Second Baptist Church on the left turn right and you are there. Hope this helps. Yep, close to 30 acres. Oak Hill is where the original Liberty Cemetery sorta expanded to the south. the two cemeteries are now separated by a small street running sorta east/west. the "colored" section of Old Liberty use to be separated by a hedge row which was missing a couple years ago. The colored section is the Eastern part of the original Liberty cemetery. > From the intersection of US Hwy. 231 & First Ave. E. Can someone please give me directions to the Oak Hill and Old Liberty cemeteries? Thanks... Benny
I am a DOVER descendant and read the post about Sherman Dover with interest. Has anyone been in contact with Dennis Dover, the penultimate DOVER researcher? We used to correspond, and I haven't heard from him in a long time. We descend from Bailey Appleton DOVER (1817 -- 1890) and Martha Ann "Patsy" Fielding (Fieldon) (1821 -- 1884 ) of Blount County, AL. Also, does anybody know who Sherman Dover descends from? Sincerely, Jan Porterfield
Jan, Dennis is still online at his Earthlink address, still monitoring the Dover list. He was here in Blount Co. for a visit about a month ago. I am looking for more information on James Powell born 1759 and his ascendants. His father John Powell, Jr. born 1731 married Alice Brewer. John Powell, Sr. born 1705 in Chatham Co., NC or VA. He was married dto Mary Sarah Cromwell about 1730 in VA. I am looking for more of their children of these 2 couples. I have some information on Mary Sarah Cromwell and her ascendants back to 1477. After wondering and collecting info for over 25 years if James Powell, b. 1759, were any kin to me, I recently found out through DNA genealogy testing that he is indeed kin. My ancestor was James Powell b.@1787 NC, married to Mazdy Murphree in Pendleton Dist SC, went to Rhea Co TN in 1808, then to Blount Co in 1832. The two may have been cousins or James b. 1759 might have been an uncle to my James. About 2 years ago I also found through DNA that I am kin to a group of Powells who migrated to Gordon Co GA from Pendleton(they were there for sure in 1820). So this set of Powells have a common ancestor, probably back to NC/VA. Research has been focusing on those Powells in 1800 Pendleton and 1790 Chatham. Recent research has been looking at deeds in Chatham and Orange Counties NC and into VA. Particularly looking for any clues to a John Powell/Alice; so far no luck. I am not fully convinced they were James b. 1759 parents. Dickey L. Thanks Bruce, Wish I could come! Have heard of these reunions and from what I hear they are great! I do have some wonderful pictures of Olney Granberry Murphree and his wife and children. On the dates of these gathering my husband will be having a stem cell transplant procedure in B'Ham. But maybe next year! My Dads Eller family, settled in Blount in the Wynnville communitee around 1880, migrating from Georgia. His fold are buried in the Wynnville Cemetery. The ALLGOOD, BYNUM, CORNELIUS and MURPHREE Four Family Reunion. The genealogy session will be on Saturday, September 30th 2006 at the Woodmen of the World Insurance Building in Oneonta starting at 9:00 a.m. and continuing on until about 3:00 p.m. There is no set agenda for the day. Everyone brings their pictures, books, documents, etc. to share with others. Feel free to bring your computer if you want. The Reunion with covered dish lunch will be held on Sunday, October 1st 2006 at Palisades Park. It usually starts about 10:30 a.m. and lasts until mid afternoon. Full details will be included in the September issue of the Four-Families Newsletter. If you are not a subscriber to the newsletter, you may really enjoy it. The newsletter focuses on the history of the Allgood, Bynum, Cornelius, and Murphree families and allied families. It is just $6.00 a year. I will probably know more details in mid-September. Please email me then. I am looking forward to seeing you at the Reunion. Bruce Jordan

Posted to ALBlount@rootsweb.com by Robin Sterling. Not a Dover descendant. The Southern Democrat, 10 Nov 1898 Cleveland, Ala. Special to the Democrat-Yesterday about 4 o'clock in the afternoon Mr. Sherman Dover's three boys aged about 10, 7 and 3 years went into the woods about half a quarter of a mile to get some wood to make a fire and while the older brother was chopping the wood it began raining and the two older brothers told their little 3 year old brother to go to the house out of the rain and he started and when he came into the path instead of going toward the house he took the opposite direction and was soon lost and when the other boys got home their brother was missing and their mother called for him but no answer was received and she and her husband hunted for him until nearly dark when a messenger was sent to Cleveland, to give the alarm and raise a crowd to hunt for him. The messenger arrived just as the I.O.O.F. lodge had begun its meeting and the adjourned at once and went in search of the boy. Soon 75 men with torches were searching every part of the woods and the search was kept up until 4 o'clock this morning when the party disbanded and went home for breakfast and returned at daylight to begin the search again. At daylight 100 men were in the woods again and the search was kept up until 9 o'clock this morning when the happy words, "He's found and is alive" greeted the ears of many anxious to know the whereabouts of the child and he was carried by Mr. John Blackwood to his mothers arms. The joy that filled his mothers heart can better be imagined than told. Women and children stood out in the roads listening for a not of the glad tidings. Aunt Betsy Reed aged about 80 years started a foot to do all she could to find the child. She is surely a good mother in Israel. The child said he slept under a mush and that he saw the lights of the searches and also saw his papa but was afraid to say anything. When the child was first seen he asked "Where's mamma?" and began to run and Mr. Jas. Walker caught him and asked him where he was going and he replied "I am going to hunt my mamma." The little fellow eat a very hearty meal and was soon asleep and seems to be all right now. The father and mother should be very thankful to a kind Providence for the protection of their darling son during the darkness of the night. Nov. 6. Reporter.

The Southern Democrat, 15 Dec 1898 It is very seldom that you find a man who has lived on the farm half a century in this section of country without raising cotton. We know of one man of this kind in this county. Mr. Solomon Murphree, of Dailey's Beat, who is 52 years old, was in town last Thursday with his first bale of cotton. Mr. Murphree is a man who has made what he possesses by hard work. He says that he was never in debt over $100 in his life and is now in debt about $25 with over $200 owing to him. He owns a 400 acre farm with a good orchard on it, 80 head of sheep, 60 goats, 10 head of cattle, 5 horses and 50 chickens, and it is from these that he makes a living and support his family. This shows that a farmer can live without raising cotton.
