    1. [ALBLOUNT] Graves, Bicknell, Brasher
    2. Kim Hughes
    3. Aphiey K. Graves (that's what the marriage license says) married James N. Bicknell on July 30, 1854 in Blount County, AL. But apparently something happened to him...I have no idea what. She then married a James Brasher somewhere! I can't find a marriage license for that marriage. I have a copy of her Alexander Graves' account records that state Aphra K. Graves, his daughter, had been given a cow and calf and 1 bed and furniture (part of her inheritance). After his death (Alexander's), the probate records show that A.H. Bashor was residing in Cullman, AL (Oct. 1, 1886). A depostion taken after Alexander's death states that "Afrey Basher, widow of James Basher, a daughter of decedant, resides in Cullman County, Alabama". Aphra's known child are: Ann Brasher (abt. 1855 - ?) William Fate Brasher (June 22, 1858 - September 12, 1939) married Lebeth Goodwin & then Mary Jane Curry Benjamin Cicero Brasher (1862 - 1933) married Mary Pender in Cullman County, AL Mary J. Brasher (abt. 1868 - ?) married John F. Todd in Cullman County, AL Abbie Drusilla Brasher (abt. 1871 - 1942?) married William Lee & then David Franklin Kuykendall in Cullman County, AL Augusta Brasher (August 10, 1872 - April 5, 1904) married Franklin LeVast in Jefferson County, AL Rose Brasher (July 17, 1875 - November 26, 1965) married Mannon Goodwin & then Andrew J. Prestidge Julius Lenier/Lanier Brasher (April 22, 1876 - May 31, 1950) married Pearl Millican in Cullman County, AL Aphra is buried at Valley Springs Cemetery in Cullman County. Her headstone has "A.H. Brasher" on it. I am a descendant of her son, William Fate Brasher & Lebeth Goodwin. If anyone has any knowledge of what happened to James N. Bicknell or where Aphra married James Brasher, I would appreciate any leads. I have always found it interesting that both men had the same first name. 2. I have found that the Blount Co. land sales or patents are great tools for tracking families. I purchased a large Blount Co. map on line from Alabama Archives and have marked off every location where the Ratliffs and Andertons bought land. You can then find out who their neighbors were and how they moved about. The land purchases are shown on the Ala. Archives web site.

    3. Ok, I see some effort going on here. http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC63546679&id=ZUzftQXGZOQC&pg=PR1&dq=blountsville+1871 When you get there, type in 728 in the "Go To Page" block. Scroll down and begin reading Samuel Horton's testimony. This is the Testimony taken by the Joint Select Committee To Inquire into the Condition of Affairs in the late Insurrectionary States Basically, they were checking on the Blount Co. Klan activity in 1871. At one point, the Governor was petitioned to send in troops. This didn't happen because according to this testimony, the county officials were, at the very least, sympathetic. You're going to see how Blount Countians dealt with each other, how the "Good Ole Boy" system worked and even in a few cases, you'll see some deaths that are not recorded elsewhere. Enjoy!

    3. And I have hope! I know that Moses Kelly was the sheriff of Jefferson Co. in 1838, and that he and Harrison W. Goyne had some kind of business relationship. When my John Goyne d. in 1839, his son, my ancestor, John R. Goyne was named as administrator of his dad's estate, however the sheriff became the administrator because of default. Since Jefferson Co. was formed from Blount Co., most like the families had ties to both counties. I know my Joel Blackburn's dad, James Blackburn, was living in Jefferson Co. when he died. James was the RS whose marker is in the cemetery across from the Clear Springs Methodist Church in Blount Co. where he and Joel were lay ministers. 2. Addendum to the previous post on James Blackwood. To be precise, the information quoted comes from more than just two sources. In addition to the service records and pension applications, which I have reviewed, the marriage comes from Blount County Marriage records, and the approximate death date comes from a book of Blount County Pensions from the Probate Judge's office. The name Aytcha, and the fact she was an Indian, comes from The Isaac Blackwood Family History, a draft copy of which can be found in the museum. James Blackwood of Cullman County has done a considerable amount of research on this line and was responsible for the aforementioned family history. Blackwood reported Sudie was a sister to the Confederate James Blackwood's daughter-in-law, Anna Lee Blackwood, who married his son Henry. Recommend you review those Blackwood papers. Microfilmed service records and pension applications can be found at major libraries in Alabama such as Wallace, Birmingham, Huntsville, and probably Gadsden to name a few... >James Blackwood enlisted in Company D of the 12th Alabama Infantry at >Talladega on 19 Apr 1864. 3. Terry or anyone with the solution, Remembering Robin Sterling's website and the bountiful information it contained, I was wonder why a group of us could not get together and put one together for Sand Mountain. My ancestor lived all over this mountain and I, as a kid, at times lived in Dekalb, Blount, Marshall, and Etowah Counties. I know that my ancestors did move around with their jobs/crops. I am thinking a site patterned after Robin's would be very helpful to a lot of researchers. But, as Terry said below we would need folks to step up to the plate and provide the data. 3. Henry had quite a few land transactions in Blount Co but the one that I am particularly interested in is recorded in book E, page 245 dated Aug.18. 1843 located in r1w township 14, section 8, it is 80 acres, the east half of the northwest fourth of section 8. the land was sold to Gilbert Barton for $300.00 and the deed also stated it was not to be taken into possesion until the death of Henry C Barton.
