Hello, I'm still hoping someone will know these folks. Or any TANNER's in AL. I am looking for information on JoAnna JOHNSON b Oct 7, 1871,d March 21, 1939, who married John Thomas TANNER b July 4, 1869, d Feb 5, 1913, and had at least six children, including Mabel TANNER b. May 11, 1899 in Anniston, Calhoun Co, AL Winnie TANNER SEARCY, Ruth TANNER HOBBS; William TANNER, Hosea TANNER and Johnny TANNER. JoAnna and John Thomas were both born in AL, but I'm not sure where. They were on the 1910 Talladega Co Census and according to that, their parents were also born in AL. They may have lived in Hokes Bluff AL at some time. JoAnna may be a descendent of Hosea (b SC abt 1808) and Louisa (b GA abt 1818) JOHNSON, but this is not confirmed. Mabel TANNER married Clarence Victor SPRADLEY Oct 23, 1912 in Talladega CO, Al, and later moved to Tuscaloosa. My father was the son of Mabel and Clarence SPRADLEY and always said he was "part Creek Indian" but I was not concerned about details of this until it was too late to ask him. Does this match any of your information? I have more information on Hosea and Louisa but nothing else on JoAnna or John T. Looking for descendants of Andrew Hawn, who married Jane Rice in Knox Co., TN in 1849. They had a son William Hawn, born 1850 in TN. The family migrated to Blount Co., AL in 1860. William married Rhoda E. in Blount Co., AL around 1870-75. Andrew and Jane also had daughters Elizabeth and Margaret, who probably married in AL too, although I have found no record of that. Andrew is gone by 1870, possibly died in the War. Jane is buried in the Ricetown Chapel Cemetery, Blount Co., AL as Jennie Rice Haun. William and Rhoda E. Hawn had at least four children between 1875 and 1880. They were Frances (Fannie), born January 1875, David, born about 1877, Mary, born about 1879, and James W., born May 1880. Frances married Walter Pulliam on January 31, 1889 in Blount Co., AL, and they had a son, James D. Pulliam, born December 1889, and a son, John Pulliam, born about 1905. The last trace I find of these families is Frances listed alone and by her maiden name, Hawn, in Dora, Walker Co., AL in 1920. Census records indicate that Frances' sister Mary married a Gentry, since she is in the 1910 Blount Co., AL household of Rhoda E. Hawn and listed as Mary Gentry. So far, I have not found the marriage record for Mary. Anyone have any thoughts on how to find living descendants in these families. I'm trying to develop a complete listing of the descendants of the family of James Monroe Rice and Sarah Hedrick, and our family seems to have completely lost touch with the descendants of their daughter, Jane Rice Hawn. -- Regards, Jim Rice (jimtrice@prodigy.net)

I have read with interest today the messages concerning the Ellis/Murphree families of Blount County. I do not believe that I am directly related to the Ellis family, but have several ties with the Murphree/Easley/Strickland families. I am not the original researcher on the following information. However, I recently received a Murphree file from Gerald Ball in Texas. The source of the file was a book written by a Mr. Bruce A Jordan in Prairie Hill, Texas. The general information from that book on the Ellis family is : "Edward Ellis born about 1673 Jeremaih Ellis about 1694 wife Mary Jermiah Ellis (II) about 1715 wife Elizabeth Edward Ellis about 1736 wife Mary Jesse Ellis, Sr abot 1757 wife Elizabeth Young (children were Sarah "Sally Ellis about 1778 who married Daniel Murphree, Jesse Ellis, Jr. Sept 20, 1790 who married Hannah Murphree, Benjamin Ellis about 1800 who married Nancy Murphree) (I forgot to check for second wives when I copied down the information) Jesse Ellis, Jr. and his wife Hannah Murphree had children Reuben,, Elizabeth, Nancy, Marium, George C, John Wesley, Daniel G.W., Jeremiah, Sarah Jane, Jesse Benson, Hannah M, Stephan S. If interested, I can dig a little deeper into the file. I do not have any of the original sources of information....only the file of names. I do have the address of the author Mr. Bruce A. Jordan if interested. Hope this information helps give a direction for your research. Ann (Kiker) Turk turk@tenet.edu
Just click on the address below for ordering instructions for the Bureau of Land Management's CDs. They are available for Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and several other states. http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/sale/sale334.html You can search the records by surname, location, date, etc.
I am interested in hearing from anyone researching the SWAN/SWANN surname. My ggggrandfather was Edward Swan (married to Hannah ?), born about 1805. His children were John, Edward, Jacob, Martha, George, Mary, and Jeramiah. Jacob, my gggrandfather, moved from Blount County after the death of his first wife (Penny ?), about 1880. He married Nancy Crim in Shelby County. I'd be glad to share what information I have. Lynn R. Christian Alabaster, Alabama lrchristian@worldnet.att.net
I have the General Land Office's land records for Alabama CD which I purchased from the Superintendent of Documents for $14. It is a bargain for sure. It has all of the original sales of land by the federal government to individuals for Alabama. At present I am focused on Blount Co. AL, and in particular Range 1E, Township 13S, which covers present day Allgood, AL, previously known as Chepultepec. That's is where my ancestors were living in the early-mid 1800s. One of the neat things about the records on the CD is that you can search for individuals by surname, or you can search by date, or by location. You can tag your selections, and you can export the data into your spreadsheet or database program so you can do some additional selecting, sorting, etc. I have printed out a list of all the original sales of land around Allgood as described above, and, assuming the purchasers lived where they bought the land, you can see from the data all the neighbors, who it seems also turned out to be kinfolk. If anyone has any early ancestors in AL who settled at Allgood, let me know, I may be able to tell you when they purchased the land (only if they were the original purchaser from the federal government) and who their neighbors were. I'm sure there will be only a few replies, because I recognize and I'm familiar with most of the surnames I'm seeing. In fact, since there aren't that many surnames, I'll list them: Cornelius Jones Hays Murphree Anderton Hallmark McGuire Morton Ingram Allgood Clowdus Baker Box Buson Blakeley Carnes Poe Crump Smith Waid Poe Tidwell Morris Harris Fitch Armstrong Daver Cowden Hanby Hendricks Woods Jones Lyon Hamaker White Blackburn Staton Johnson Derrick Watson Barnes Calvert Robertson McGuire Morgan 1858 is the date of the last sale of the land in this section, with 1823 shown as the earliest sale date.

So, I don't have the answer as to whether Jesse married both Hannah and her half sister Nancy. Maybe someone else can help out here.

Wanda, I'm showing Benjamin's birth only as 1800, SC. Do you have more details about same? I see also that his son, Jesse C. Ellis moved to Erath Co. TX. Sarah Ellis, Benjamin's oldest sister, married Daniel Murphree III. Solomon I believe was the brother of Daniel's father. I've read that Daniel Murphree II was killed during the Revolution, but I've seen no documentation concerning same. I see that Mr. Bates was also a descendant of Benjamin.

Pat, I don't have a lot concerning your Jesse, and I know nothing about subsequent marriages. However, I'll quote from a book written by an Ellis researcher, O.D. Bates, in the Dallas, TX library: Jesse Ellis, Jr., witnessed deed of Jesse Ellis, Sr. "to my son-in-law, Benjamin Hudgins" 15 Jul 1812, Pendleton Dist. Deed Book M, p. 358. Probably he was the Jesse Ellis who was married to Hannah Murphree, daughter of Solomon Murphree according to a bible record of Solomon Murphree published in Old Southern Bible Records by Lester, p. 232. The 1810 census, Pendleton Dist. shows Jesse Jr., and wife with one older femal in household. Year of marriage probably 1809. Not in 1820 Pendleton Dist. census. Probably removed to Blount Co. AL where a Jesse Ellis was listed in 6th Regt. Blount Co. Militia, 1818 (AL Historical Quarterly, Vol 6 p. 147. In 1830 Blount Co. census Benjamin Ellis, b. 1790-1800, Jesse Ellis, b. 1790-1800, and Solomon Murphree Jr. are listed consecutively. History of Methodism in Alabama p. 161 shatat that a Methodist Society was organized within bounds of the Tuskaloosa Circuit in house of Aaron Murphree in Murphree's Valley; later the group built a house of worship called "Ebenezer" and Jesse Ellis is named as an early member of this Society who entered the Methodist itinerancy. A reference to him is found in Ala Genealogicval Society Magazine, Vol. 8, under Notes from Meth. Histories in a sketch of the life of his grandson, the Rev. Jesse F. Ellis, b. 3/7/1844 Blount Co. AL, d. 5/16/1879, son of a local preacher, and grandson of the Rev. Jesse Ellis, dec'd. The grandfather is described as a pioneer of Methodism in Ala., a member of the Ala. Conference; he was employed in collecting and forming into societies Methodists who were immigrants to Ala. from other states. A death notice in the Southern Christian Advocate reported that "Mrs. Hannah Ellis, wife of Rev. Jesse Ellis, of the Ala. Conf. died at Wetumpka on the 21st Feb 1852, daughter of Solomon Murphree, born in Pendleton dist., SC Aug. 25, 1791. Jesse Ellis Sr. was b. abt 1747 and d. aft 1818. He lived in Warren and Chatham Counties in NC and in Pendleton Dist. SC. The Spring, 1980 Ellis Cousins Newsletter has similar information and lists the 12 children of Jesse and Hannah Murphree. My earliest Blount Co. AL ancestor was John Blakely and his son, James. They were there by 1818, coming from York Co. SC by way of TN. John d. 1851 and James d. 1865. James son, John, m. Celia Murphree, a sister to Ellis Murphree, and granddaughter of Daniel Ellis. After John died in 1846 Celia m. John Foust, a Methodist minister. Celia died in 1852, and John and Celia's children were raised by Ellis Murphree. Their son, James Daniel Blakely, named for his grandfathers, m. Nancy Hanna Blackburn in Blount Co. in 1864. They moved to Hamilton Co. TX in the 1870s. Nancy was a descendant of James Blackburn and his son, Joel Blackburn who also arrived in Blount Co. in 1818 or possibly earlier. The Blackburns lived in the vicinity of Clears Springs Methodist Church. Stephen Murphree, Celia's brother, m. Jane Blakely, John's sister. It seems that most of my ancestors, from about 1818-1874, lived in the vicinity of present day Allgood.
Looking for information on the James family of Cullman Alabama. I found my great-great-granfather listed in 1900 Cullman census. Daniel James, b May 1828 in TN as was his father and mother. Age 72 at 1900 census living with Becky J. James, b FEB 1857. Next door was my great-grandfather Louis James, b Dec 1859 with wife Martha A.N.F.L.E. Speakman, b 1862. Children listed Treley J. James, b Nov 1882; Tanzy L.E. James, b Oct 1885; Razely M. James, b Oct 1888; Juliann James, b Feb 1892; Desey D.A. James, b May 1894; and my grand-father Isom James, May 1897. Think Daniel, Louis and Martha and probably other family are buried at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church in graves marked only with small stones. Seeking any information I can find. Would love to find out who Daniel was married to and is she buried at Jones Chapel also. Found Ambros James, b 1873 with his wife Berthenia A. James, b May 1881 GA, with their infant child New Berry James. Think Ambors is the younger brother of Louis and Becky. Where did all these James people go? My dad was in the Air Force so we did not live in Cullman and I don't know the family history. I am a 42 year old police sergeant in Montgomery, Alabama. Any one can help me out there, I would appreciate it. Thanks Chuck James.
Becky, Please do not limit you searching to the logical names for which "Jake" could be a nickname. My "Uncle Dick" was actually Jesse Henry TAYLOR. Now would you have ever guessed either of those names for a "Dick"?? Would you believe I have two cousins named Richard 'after' their Uncle Dick :-). Please remember to check all of the TAYLORs of the right age range to make sure, if possible, that they are not your "Jake". Hi Everyone: I need help finding my Taylor family. I have hit a brick wall. This is my line. If anyone recognizes any names.... please contact me. Jake? Taylor- This name was given to me by a family member. I have looked for a Jake and a Jacob Taylor in the Blount Co.AL. area, but can't find one anywhere. Jake, I assume, is a nickname. It was also said that Jake lost an arm in the Civil War. I found one note in a book on a J.T. Taylor that stated " J.T. Taylor wounded in side and arm, probably died from his wounds" Yet, I can't find a J.T. Taylor either. His children state on the census that their father and mother were both born in SC. These are his children and I have found all of them as adults, living in the Blount Co.,AL. area. (The names were also given to me by a family member) 1. Lewis Taylor- b: 1853 in Ga. md: Mary ? d: in TX. 2. Henry William Taylor-b: in Ga. md: Arena Bentley in Blount Co.,AL on Mar.11,1875. d: in Arkansas 3. "Ike" Isaac Taylor- b: 1856 in Ga?. md: Elizabeth Taylor d: probably in Winston Co.,AL. 4. Jane Taylor- died at 18 5. Ransom Taylor- b: 1859 in Ga. md: Aft. 1880 to Adaline Martin. (He is listed in the 1880 Blount census, unmarried and living with his aunt Rebecca Taylor) 6. Eliza Ann Taylor- b: Nov.15,1852 Ga. md: Aug.4,1872 in Blount Co.,AL. to Joshua Sullins. She died Nov.29,1919 ( I ordered a death certificate on Eliza, but they say one was never submitted) On the 1880 Blount Co.,census there is a David Taylor(b: 1820)and his wife Elizabeth (b: 1825) living next door to Ransom, Isaac, and Lewis. They have a daughter Mary L. (b: 1866) living with them. If I had a true name for Jake I probably could continue my search. Can anyone help?
