Dear List Members and Cousins, It has been a long time since I posted a query about this line of mine, so i want to try again to see if newer members may have a connection to this family. I need to locate living descendants of the family of William Brittian Phillips of Etowah and Jefferson County, Alabama. He was the son of Jesse P. Phillips and Rebecca Morton of Etowah and Marshall County, AL. William B. Phillips married Mary Rachel Smith in Etowah County in 1877. William B. Phillips and Mary Rachel Smith had seven children; 1. Arminda B. Phillips (b. abt 1878) 2. Magnolia Phillips (b. abt. 1880) 3. Jesse Monroe Phillips (b. Jan. 12, 1883 d. Dec. 27, 1973) 4. William Phillips (b. June, 1885) m. Maude ??? 5. Lela Phillips (b. May, 1889) m. Forney J. Mize on Mar. 10, 1907. 6. Edwin M. "Eddie" Phillips (b. Dec. 19, 1894, d. Dec., 1978 in Jefferson Co., AL) 7. Viola Mae Phillips (b. Sept. 1896) m. George Knowles Jesse Monroe Phillips and his sister, Lela Phillips, were married in a double wedding on Mar. 10, 1907 in Blount County. Jesse married Ida Belle Cornelius and Lela married Forney Mize. Jesse M. Phillips only had two great-grandchildren, my sister and myself. He only had one child and one grandchild. I inherited all the old pictures of this Phillips line with most being unidentified. Some pictures have Jesse in them, both as a child and as an adult, with many unknown people in these pictures with him. I would LOVE to find someone who descends from any of these lines who may have copies of some of these pictures who might be able to identify the faces. It has been a couple years since I've looked for living descendants online of this family, so now I'm trying once again. My mother and grandmother are gone, and I never knew of any "cousins" growing up to connect with, so I'm desperate to find anyone who may be related to any of these people so i can exchange records and share photos with. Any help or guidance in locating living descendants would mean so much to me. If anyone knows anything about this family, please contact me directly at [email protected] . Thank you, Robert C. Johnston, Jr. 139 Eagle Creek Drive Wetumpka, AL 36092 USA [email protected]
I tried a Google Search... and amazingly enough, you were correct http://huntsville.about.com/library/blank/blmaple3.htm The People in Maple Hill Cemetery--continued 6. John William Walker (1783-1823) was a lawyer and president of the 1819 Constitutional Convention, first U. S. Senator from Alabama, father of LeRoy Pope Walker and son-in-law of LeRoy Pope with whom he shares a tombstone. 7. Leroy Pope Walker (1817-1884) was a lawyer, state legislator, Brigadier General CSA, and first Secretary of War of the Confederate States of America when the order was issued to fire on Fort Sumter, starting the Civil War. Im sure that there were more results in the Google search results.. I just looked at this one.... you could probably find others using other search engines??? Dave Blaikie, Atlanta, Ga
The Walker County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, August 22, 2002, 1 p.m. at the Carl Elliott Regional Library. The public is invited. Guest speaker will be Roger Starnes, Chief Appraiser for the Walker County Revenue Commission. Mr. Starnes, for the past five years, has been serving as a volunteer in the reenactment of the U.S. Army's 39th Infantry in the War of 1812 at the Horseshoe Bend National Park. One of his many interests is the history of Walker County and northern Alabama. He is particularly knowledgeable about the northeastern area of Walker County, Sipsey River, its tributaries and pioneer families/homesteads in that area. Is there any information (membership, history, etc.) available on the Bethlehem Methodist Church in Blount County? I have a copy of a Certificate of Baptism for John A. Strickland dated April 17, 1880. It is signed by B. F. Lea member of the north Alabama M. E. Conference, M. E. South. John Asberry Strickland was born September 26, 1879, and died August 1943 and was buried in the Waxahachie City Cemetery, Ellis County, Texas. He was the son of William Daniel and Margaret Kisire (Murphree) Strickland. Like so many others in her family the Widow Margaret Murphree Strickland and her four sons migrated to Ellis County, Texas where she joined the Oak Branch Methodist Church, Ellis County, Texas in 1892. John Asberry Strickland is the grandson of Elijah Murphree and William M. Strickland, and g grandson of Daniel Easley... all of Blount County. I would like to find out more about the Bethlehem Methodist Church of Blount County if possible. Thank you. Ann Turk in Texas

Does anyone know the name of the pre-Civil War Academy near Summit, Blount County? Anything about its history. Now, on the great hopes that anyone does, does anyone have enrollment lists for that school, or know where they might be.

Hello all, I have read most of the Emails about "unfriendly state"! My 2 cents worth of reply is: Some readers did sympathize with the Texas lady, some castigated her for lack of knowledge. I read the original Email and think I understand her thinking--a 32 cent stamp is cheaper than a $2. phone call. She may not have known where to call!! She sent the forms etc BUT TO THE WRONG PLACE. I have found that ALL aspects of local genealogy was userped by the STATE OFFICES years ago! Here in our little county, births, deaths, marriage etc are sent to the STATE offices. Birth, marriage and death notices are found in local newspapers But these are NOT certified records! I can see that the State needs this information for consolidating records and take a load off county staff. They (staff) now have more to do than was necessary 30 years ago. The Lady said she sent, resent, resent her request several times. The first handler of the request was inept or something. A phone call or two of the handler should have located JUST where the forms need to go. Since the sender had paid postage to deliver the forms, the handler could have re addressed the mail to the proper destination. I sympathize with the Texas lady. To others: request Birth, death certificates (certified) from State Capitol offices. I dont know why this information is in "HEALTH ___ offices" ?? Howard Tidwell

Diane, Did you know that one can search the archives of the posts that are made to the list? Go to http://lists.rootsweb.com/ Go down the page to "USA" and click on "AL" Then under "Counties, Boroughs and Districts" click on the county which you want to search. At the very Bottom of the page, there is a paragraph about Archives. There are two links for two kinds of search pages for the Archives. Choosing one of these will open a search page. The "Browse" link is good if you know the month of the post. Otherwise, use the "search" link to search by year. Hope this helps, Melba Clark PS, The list of Sherriffs was sent by Terry Jackson on 7 July 2001. ----- Original Message ----- From: "D. My search is located in Blount Co., Al. 1850 census shows John, 81, his daughter Margaret, 40 and her two children. I believe that John maybe brother to Frances Elizabeth LEWELLEN, born 1781, N.C. married William McDONALD, born 1782 Va. They had 10 children. Could you check and see if you may have either of these in your line? Or if you know of anyone searching this line, have them contact me. Thank you for your assistance. You will find books on most states of the United States, Civil War and Rev War books, family files, family books, and much more. Not to mention the great displays and artifacts. So there is something for everyone. The family files and family books are behind Mrs Rhudy's desk, and for your convenience you can view a book on the back table with list of the surnames featured in the family books. Then just ask for the book by number. The museum is open from 9 to 3, Tues thru Fri, closed Sat, Sun, Mon. There is handicapped parking out front now and ramp for wheelchair access (new). Should you desire to call Amy Rhudy the phone number is: 205-625-6905 Thanks for writing!...Melba Lowe
Melba, Thank you for the information on the local Museum. Does the Museum have an e-mail address so that we could e-mail questions about any surname that the Museum might have information on? Would it be better to just call for any information needed? Thanks for your time, Diane
Does anyone have or know where I can find a list of the sheriff's for Blount Co, AL? Thanks for you time and help, Diane
