Sandra, You are welcome. Melba's contributions to the list has help so many of us on the list. She's an Alabama Gem, and how lucky we are to have her. Debra Garner
Melba Lowe sent this to the list a while back: The following is an article written for the Southern Democrat in 1936 about the BLOUNT SPRINGS community. Author Bessie Warren Blount Springs Community is located on the Bee Line Highway between Garden City and Warrior. In the year 1818 Jonas Byars moved from N C and settled in a little cave one and one half miles East of the Springs, and in 1820 was built the first cabin. In the late twenties the property was bought by Mr. Harris and Mr Perine who built a splended hotel right near the springs, and it was not long until Blount Springs became a noted Summer resort, and was patronized by the people of the South. In the early forties the property was sold to a Mr George Goff, a wealthy New Yorker, who planted Mulberry trees along what is now known as the Mulberry prong of the Warrior River. The river took its name from this project of Mr Goff. As soon as the Mulberry trees were large enough Mr Goff placed millions of silk worms on these trees and started a silk factory at Blount Springs. The silk industry was a failure so was Mr Goff and in a few years the property was sold under mortgage and bought by Parrish and Company of New York. The property remained in their hands until bought by J F B Jackson in 1876. The hotel, which had already been started was burned in 1866. When JFB Jackson bought the property he built another, and in 1878 built a large one. In the later eighties, Mr Jackson sold the property to the Sloss Company of Birmingham, Al. In 1895 Blount Springs was again sold under mortgage, and bought by Arthur W Smith, W E Byars, and Capt. Graves. In 1903 they sold this property to W M Drennen whose heirs and assingns now own the property. Debra Garner

Got lots of Bolding kin, Sandra. I thought most of them came thru Franklin Co tho. My grandmother was Betty Bolding , officially Elizabeth Florentine Bolding, dau of Andy and Ailey Miller Bolding of Franklin Co. They had many children. They are at rest in the Shady Grove Cem, in McIntosh Co, OK. People tell me there are "red" and :"blue" Boldings. We are supposed to be the red due to the Indian connections. ron in CA Bolding, Buckner, Christopher, Golladay, Miller, Oliver, Ramsey, Stone, Swank, Woolbright, et al At 07:19 PM 11/27/02 EST, you wrote: >Any of you kin to Boldings? >Sandra Kelton > >
Hi folks, I haven't done this for some months now, so will renew the offer. I am in Sacramento CA. We have some statewide archives here that might have helpful information if someone is looking for the family black sheep who left and migrated to CA (if you can imagine that!) I am generally more successful with things that can be placed in a time and area framework, like death dates and places and obits and such. There is also a state wide property owner list for about 1970 on. Feel free to ask about other possibilities. I can't get to birth or probate records. This is a no charge thing, unless you want to cover stamps and copy machine charges. ron in CA
We are pleased to announce that MAHALA LOWE, wife of JEREMIAH LOWE of Blount County, Alabama, was a SHOOK before marriage. This revelation was on the death certificate of her son Francis Marion Lowe. Mahala Shook married James McCauley in Blount County Tennessee in 1833. She was a pregnant widow, it seems in 1840. Her son Harrison McCauley was born in 1840 in the fall, Blount Co. Tn. Sometime around 1843 Mahala Shook McCauley married Jeremiah Lowe. They are first seen by us on the 1850 census of Gordon County, Georgia, then they came on to Blount County, Alabama and were on the 1860 census. We have further info on the Lowe family if anyone is researching and might be interested. Have heard from other researchers that they thought Mahala's maiden name might have been Harrison, since her first son had that name. Mahala and Jeremiah were seperated in 1870. He was alone, 70 years old, Wagon maker. He died 1872 Blount. Mahala lived with her daughter Philista and was with her in 1870 Blount, Listed as M H Lowe. Mahala died in 1884. Wanted to share this with other descendants of this couple. We are thrilled to have a new surname!. Happy Thanksgiving to all... Melba and Doug Lowe (Doug is gt gt grandson of Mahala Shook and Jeremiah Lowe. We are hoping to gain further insight into the Shook family beginning with an interesting site we found today: www.shookhistory.org
