    3. To all other list members, 1.Please remember the following. Consider an advance warning on a virus to be a hoax until you verify that it really is a virus. 2.The simplest and best way to prevent any virus from attaching and attacking your e-mail address book is to have your first address one that can go not bemailed any place. The best example would be something which looks like the following: [email protected] 000 3. The reason to use all 0's is that it will be the first one in your book. Last, have trust in your List Manager. In Cullman Co., Hiway 91 crosses Thacker's Creek R3W, S 23, a very short distance is the beginning of Damascus Rd. which continues to Damascus Church & goes over I-65. Marriot's Creek runs parallel to I-65 in S21 and the Damascus Rd. crosses it also in S21. Personally, I think the part of #91 from Arkadelphia to S24 and joining Road 509 originally was the old Arkadelphia to Blountsville Rd. I think from S24 northeasterly the road was the Hanceville Rd. A map reader, I am not; could show you. Sorry; hope this helps. Barbara in Cullman

    1. RE: [ALBLOUNT-L] Re: 1862 Confederate Census
    2. Robin Sterling
    3. Hi Eldon...! Let me see if i can answer some of your questions. The title "Blount County 1862 Confederate Census" is a bit of a misnomer. As far as i know, the Confederate Government never got around to conducting a census, they were much too busy waging a little war at the time. What you are referring to, as far as Blount County goes, is a county-wide accounting for volunteers for the Confederate Army conducted in the second year of the War. This early type of welfare was done by the County Commissioners in an effort to help take care of the families left behind by the soldiers gone off to war for months at a time. As a matter of fact, the information comprising the "census" comes from the Commission Court Minute Book, 1862 - 1880, pages 1 - 43. Other counties within the State of Alabama did similar work with their Civil War time County Commissions, Lawrence County comes to mind. I have a book by the late Spencer Waters which details relief efforts in that county. I can't speak for Marshall or any other of the area counties because I've simply not had the time to review their materials, but i wouldn't be surprised. So, to answer your questions: no, the "census" is not broken down by county in the usual sense; however, the county commissioners conducted their survey by "Beats." There's a good chance Marshall County did something similar as Blount and Lawrence, but you'd have to check the courthouse there, or email the Marshall County site, much like you did the Blount County site here. I'm currently preparing the 1862 Blount County material for the web site; it should be available for everyone within a week. Now, for your Elijah Wade: I checked the material for Mr. Wade and could not find him. That does not mean he wasn't there at the time, it only means he didn't enlist in those Blount County Companies who recruited in the first year of the War. The "census" even missed some of my own relatives who enlisted at the same time as some of the others who were enumerated. Therefore, it's far from comprehensive. I found your Elijah in the 1855 Alabama State Census for Blount County. That census is here on this site: http://home.hiwaay.net/~bobwonda/index.html By the way, I also found him by conducting a query on "Elijah Wade" at this site: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm The single return I received was a Elijah Wade in Company A of the 25th Regiment of Confederate Infantry...is that your man? I couldn't find him in the 1866 State Census for Blount County. I recommed you look for perhaps a widow in this list of Wades: Wade, Emily, Wade, Francis C. Wade, J.A., Wade, Melia, Wade, Millie, Wade, S.B., Also try the 1870 Federal Census index located at most major libraries and see if you can track him from there. best of luck! robin >Hi Robin, >Thanks for responding. Maybe you can answer a couple of questions for >me. >Is it broken down by county like the U.S Census? >Should I be able to find one for Marshall Co? >Are they indexed? >I am looking for an Elijah WADE who was in Marshall Co in 1860 but was >not there in 1866 when the state census was taken. >Thank you for your help. >Eldon >mailto:e[email protected] >List admin for SC-Old96 >Researching: WADE, HAMES

    3. David, I have searched and searched my gr. grandmother, Letha Jane Graves and cannot find her. A family story says she had a brother named "Perry Blount". If you have anymore Graves families listed, would you check and see if you have her in your Graves. She married Carter M. Waid about 1870. You might find Perry and see where he belongs. Any help certainly appreciated. Shirleen Johnston
