    3. Hello everyone, Just a reminder that discussions on this list should be limited to Blount County history and genealogy. :) If a subscriber is concerned about having possibly spread a virus to other listmembers, please contact me about the matter ([email protected]) rather than sending a message to the list. * It's quite unlikely that anyone would receive a virus via the ALBount list. All email submitted to the list is first filtered through an email list management system before being forwarded to our subscribers. Any message submitted to the list that's larger than 20k would not be forwarded to our subscribers. Virus infected email attachments tend to be considerably larger than 20k. For those of you not yet familiar with the Klez virus, which forges the name of the sender in the "from" section of an email, please take a moment and read: "Klez Worm, Not Sender, Hates You" at Wired News http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,52055,00.html * Klez only affects PCs running Microsoft's Windows operating system. Thank you, Glenda Savage ALBlount Admin

    1. [ALBLOUNT-L] virus information....
    2. Robin Sterling
    3. hello blount county researchers... i make a concerted effort to only post messages relative to researching in blount county, but something has come to my attention which warrants a momentary divergence and i beg your indulgence for the rest of this message.... i have received more than one message over the last few weeks from some subscribers to the list asking about a virus that seemed to be coming from my computer. i even had one concerned subscriber to write and tell me to stop posting messages. he went on to say he was unsubscribing to the list because of a virus in his computer he believed came from me. of course, i don't want to be responsible for something like that... please bear with me while i share the following email i sent this morning to Robin Amerson, a concerned AL-Blount subscriber..... Dear Robin... no i didn't send anything like that. however, you are not the first to write me and tell me i was sending out a virus with my email. because of the problem i thought was my fault, i went out and bought the expensive version of Norton Anti Virus and ran it on my computer a few months ago, but it came up negative and free of viruses. here's what i suspect has happened: i routinely send research-related messages about updates to the Blount County Site to the AL-Blount repeater to send messages to everyone who subscribes to the list. when subscribers check their email, the message with my email address is downloaded into as many folk's computers who subscribe to the list. at that point my email address is automatically added to some of the subscriber's address books because of the way their software is set up. if any of those several computers is infected with that particular virus, it will replicate itself and send itself out to others on the host's email address book disguised as a message from some random member of their address book....sometimes me. here's another reason it's probably not my computer perpetuating the virus: i use a Macintosh G4 the operating system of which is largely immune to the types of viruses which infect the PCs that most everyone else uses. however, because of the potential that i am a "carrier" i will continue to monitor my machine with Norton Anti-Virus and recommend that everyone else do the same. please let me know if you continue to receive messages of this type with my return email address... kindest regards, robin >Hi Robin, > >This is Robin Amerson and I rec'd an email earlier today that was addresses >from you but I don't think you send it. 3. The following is an example of the 'jdbmgr.exe virus hoax. Click here to find out why this is a hoax. Go to Urban Legend at http://www.tafkac.org/ulz/xjdbmgr.html and it will give you the following explanation: The attached e-mailer is a victim of a hoax. Do not delete from your computer the jdbmgr.exe file. Here is the attached example:::: "Hi Everybody: I just received a message today from a friend. His Address Book had been infected by a virus and it was passed on to my computer. My Address Book, in turn, has been infected. The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or McAfee anti-virus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. It's sent automatically by the messenger and by the Address Book, whether or not you sent emails to your contacts. I have checked, found it, and deleted it." Here's how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it: DO THIS: 1. Go to Start, Find, or Search option. 2. In the files/folder option, write the name jdbgmgr.exe 3. Be sure you search your C drive 4. Click "find now" 5. The virus has a teddy bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN IT 6. Right click and delete it. It will then go to the Recycle Bin 7. Go to the recycle bin and delete it there as well. IMPORTANT If you find the virus, you must contact all the people in your address book so they can eradicate it in their own address books. Sorry about this, I'm sure everyone in my address book will have it. I did find this on my computer so I am sure that you will too. You will need to contact everyone in your address book wheather or not you have sent them e-mail recently or not. Sorry about this - I thought that you should know. I'm not sure if it is a hoax but wanted to make you aware. The letter above is the letter that I received and as I looked on my computer and the file was there.
