I still don't know of any connection and the Smith name is so common that there may not be a connection. I suspect he and his wife, Mary Vernon, traveled with a group from N.C. to Tenn. to Tuscaloosa and then Bibb Co. as their son, Andrew David Smith, finally settled in Scottsville near Vernontown. If anyone has done any research on the early SMITHS in Bibb please let us know. Caroline Horton, ALBIBB List Administrator
Caroline, Most of my early Smith info. came to me by way of U.V. Waldrop. He researched extensively in the Smith Ancestry. He shows our earlier Smith's did come from NC. We do have a Thomas Smith, son of our Adam and Eliz. Gomer Smith. Thomas was b. in 1815. Some of his siblings show to be b. NC, he does not and has a wife named Ailsey Pitts. This line of Smith's are in Bibb Co. in 1830 census. Adam Smith(Schmidts) came from Germany as well as his wife Eliz. Thomas & Ailsey do have a son named David, which is different, from the usual John, James, Jacob, Joseph, etc. Doesn't show when he was b. Thomas & Ailsey are buried Pitts-Martin Cemetery, Mars Hill, AL. Nelda, your line must be one of those earlier Smiths. My gt. gf Andrew David Smith was b. in Bledsoe Co., Tenn. in 1832. The family story is that not long after the family reached the Tuscaloosa/Bibb area, when my gt. gf was a young boy, his father, Thomas (who was definitely m. to Mary Vernon) died - in Greene Co. In McCords cemetery book he lists a marker for Thomas Smith at Union Cemetery but it isn't there now. I've always thought it was a memorial marker. And just last week I was sifting and organizing, for the hundreth time, my genealogy notes. I found a page where I had printed info several years ago on a Thomas Smith with a marker at Old Bethel Church in Ralph, Ala. There is also a marker for whom I assume is his 18 month old son, Ezekiel T. Smith, with "son of T. and M. Smith" on it. I looked for Ralph and, by golly, it is in Tuscaloosa Co. but almost on the Greene Co. line and so he could have died in Greene and been buried in Tuscaloosa or the county lines could have changed slightly since that time. Can't wait to take a trip to Ralph! This was printed from the rootsweb altuscal cemetery listing.
