Look for funeral home records in libraries and especially University manuscript collections. Use www.worldcat.org to search for funeral home records and many other things. Liz Hicks You want the ledger sheets of the deceased funeral. I've had tremendous help from funeral homes and their records. Remember, if you're trying to find a cemetery, ask the funeral home in the area. They have to know as may have a request to bury someone there. ------ Original Message ------ Received: Mon, 14 Apr 2008 11:35:00 PM EDT From: "usmarsh" <usmarsh@cox.net> To: <albibb@rootsweb.com> Subject: [ALBIBB] Funeral Homes of Past Can anyone tell me about Heard undertaker back in the 1920's. I am not sure when he went out of business. Where would his records be now? His name "Hill Heard" shows up on a relatives death cert from March of 1920. It says he was in Brent. I had a wonderful time there on my research trip last week. I found out a lot of good and bad things. I will take them both. I did find that the Centreville paper did not have African American obits for the 1940's. But the suggestion from a list member was well appreciated since I was able to cross out one more source. At least I and others won't wonder about that one any more. Also does anyone know Mr. Lockett that supposedly takes care of Coopers and or Centreville cemetery? I need to reach him. The LDS have come in to the basement at the Annex and organized and boxed a lot of the documents up. The rest of the huge books are still there. There are a few tax list from the late 1890's, only about 4 or 5 of them. There are no others, according to staff there. Would old tax records have had to be filed at the state level and would they have copies of those missing years. They said that they weren't even aware of the 1848 tax list that is out there. I am looking for information on Amanda Hill born around 1808 and her daughter Elizabeth Hill born around 1836.? Elizabeth is the mother of James W. Hill born around 1854.? I have them listed in the 1860 census for West Side Cahaba River, Bibb County.? If there is anyone else who knows anything about these women or other family members listed as Sarah E., Amanda, Jane C, Racheal, Charles M, and Henry Hill all living together in 1860.? James W. Hill is my great great grandfather and also went by Richard Hill or Dick and married Fanny Jones also born in 1854.? Thanks for any help. Diane
