    3. Here's a response I received from Vicky Clemmons in Centreville re the question of "poor farms" or "old folks homes": This is referring to the early and mid 1900's I would think. I would also guess that the same was true in the 1800's - people were looked after by family. By the late 1950's in Walker Co.,there were nursing homes but still without much regulation at that time. "I asked Mrs. Bernice and she said there was no particular place, that family took care of their relatives and I also asked Bobby Pratt, his father was Ansley Pratt the town doctor, and he said that everyone stayed with relatives and doctors like his father made house calls, if they needed to go to the hospital they went to Selma, Tuscaloosa or Birmingham. I live in Dr. Stephen Meigs house and he to was a town doctor and this is how he worked. There were some boarding houses in Centreville and other towns, maybe this is what some were maybe referring to, in fact, Jerry Pow [Bibb Probate Judge] was born in a boarding house that sits where the [Courthouse] Annex is now."
