    3. Good idea, Liz, this topic came up before Christmas and I don't remember the time frame in question. I believe it was before the 1950's and I don't think there were any county or state regulations. But . . . it could still have been a county *owned* place of care and residence. Stella, great idea about goggling. Here's one site that came up http://www.poorhousestory.com/poorhouses_in_alabama.htm Interesting. I haven't looked at everything on that site or elsewhere. This site did mention a "poorhouse" in Tuscaloosa County (from 1860 census) and others (but not Bibb) as well as a law giving the county commissions responsibility for such and a good history of poor houses.
