    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ltate29 Surnames: Putnell, Gaylord Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.bibb/3832.1.1.1.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I believe I have found Matilda Ann "Pretnel" in the 1850 census in Bibb County AL. Prior to this I had looked at the marriage of Harriet Putnal and James Pilkington in Bibb County in 1845 since another researcher indicated Family Search had Matilda listed with the surname Putnel. Harriet and James Pilkington moved to TX prior to 1850 when they are found in Sabine County TX. Harriet is then 25 and was born in NC. She appears to be Matilda's sister. Based on the possibility that Putnal/Putnel was the surname, I searched the 1850 census in AL and other states for various spellings of names similar to Pretnel and Putnel/Putnal and for girls named Matilda/Matty/Mat* who were born in NC in 1833 /- 2 years, but without finding Matilda. However I finally located her in Bibb County in 1850 on pages 80-A as "Ann Patman" as transcribed in the census index at Ancestry.com, however the surname appears to be written as Putman in the actual census, but it is more likely Putnam since Putnam is more like Putnal/Putnel. She is living with her mother Louisa and some siblings in a household headed by Thomas W. and Margaret J. Gillard. The youngest child is the only one of the "Patman" family born in AL, all others were born in NC. Thomas Gillard was born in NC and wife Margaret in AL. Thos W Gillard 37 Margaret J Gillard 25 Louisa Patman 50 Ann Patman 18 (this is very likely Matilda Ann) William Patman 20 Franklin Patman 14 Thomas Patman 12 Rush Patman 8 The family listed just before them are Morelands, though Matilda's future husband James P. Moreland is not among them. Matilda's maiden name may actually be Putnell rather than Putnal/Putnel/Pritnel or Putnam. Using the soundex setting to search for Putnal in the 1870 AL census shows William Putnell, 39, born NC, in Shelby County, Beat 3, and Frank Putnell, 26, born GA, single, is found on the page just before William. I do not find Thomas or Rush anywhere in the US in that census. William Putnell served in the 29th AL Infantry Regiment during the Civil War; possibly in the 30th as well. William is found in Shelby in the 1860 census with wife Nancy, but surname is listed as Presnell in Ancestry's index; the T in the surname is not properly crossed. Someone else suggested the surname to be Purnell on that entry, however the wife and age match that in the 1870 census. Frank is listed in the 1860 Shelby County AL census with surname Parnell. Louisa appears to be the Louisa Gaylord who married a Mr. Putnell as shown at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=shiversje&id=I14428 There is a John Putnell in the 1840 Beaufort County NC census; as shown in the above link, Beaufort County is where Louisa's mother was born.
