The following is from the Jefferson Co., Ala. list: According to the US Geographic Names Information System: Gorgas Post Office (historical) Walker AL Unknown Unknown Unknown - - Gorgas Mine Walker AL 333920N 0871950W Gorgas Populated Place Walker AL 333857N 0871229W Gorgas School (historical) Walker AL 333918N 0871312W Gorgas Power Plant Building Walker AL 333840N 0871155W This is a great website, where you can enter a "feature name" then add the state, county, type of feature, etc. to find out where things are. You don't need to enter all of those, and in fact it is usually better to just put the name and state, then narrow it down if too many places come up. The URL is http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=135:1:16169917688153334225 I keep it bookmarked so that I can look up towns, cemeteries, rivers and streams, etc. It has both historical and current place names, and has helped me find towns that no longer exist. As you'll see from the first line of results above, sometimes the system has "unknown" for the latitude and longitude of places that have disappeared, but as here, there is generally some other place name that is similar that will get you close. You can ask it to give alternate names, too, so if a place's name has changed, you can still find it, and know what name replaced it.
