Charlotte, Not sure if this is worth your time, but my gggrandmother Candace Yucatan Owens born 1861 in Scottsville, Bibb County, was an orphan, no knowledge of her parents or when they died, she had my grandmother in 1886, named Julia Emma Miller, but supposedly was widowed when my grandmother was born, yet I find a Candace Miller in the 1880 census for Bibb County Scottsville, noted to be an orphan, born 1861, and living with a married couple middle age, I think they had the surname Thomas, and I sometimes wonder if my gg grandmother had my grandmother out of wedlock and her maiden name was Miller all along. I don't have any information about her alleged maiden name of Owens and the unusual middle name of Yucatan, yet on her gravestone in Port Arthur Texas, it says Candace Y. Drouet, she married a Frenchman named Amand Drouet somewhere between 1886 and 1890 and they moved to Tennessee, had twin boys, and still had my grandmother, and then they moved to Texas, lived there until Droue! t deserted her in about 1904 and moved to Oklahoma. She somehow moved with the 3 children to Louisiana and ran a boarding house there until my grandmother married and moved to Port Arthur, Texas, where Candace moved and lived with my grandmother and grandfather until her death in 1924. On a 1900 Texas census, I find Candace and Amand Drouet (aka A.V. Drouet) and Candace's parents are listed as being born in England. Otherwise, I know zero about her background. The only family story grandmother (1886-1981) told me was about a woman (I don't remember who but could have been her mother's mother) was working in the fields on a farm and it began to hail and it killed her, before she could find cover. Could Candace's mother have been killed when Candace was small, and could Candace's father have been killed in the Civil War, or could both parents have been killed in the Civil War? I cannot find Candace Yucatan Owens in any census before she was married, and I have found no marriage records for her either. If you have any records to search for her name or any Owens in Bibb County during those years, I would appreciate it. I still need to do research on her at the LDS library in Dallas. Thanks. But copies could not be purchased. I have transcribed the first 51 pages of this specific deed book with it's complete index provided as well. Digital images of this index are available to me should I need to check for errors in the transcription of the index. I will be happy to do lookups. The full name of each person of interest should be provided ... if available.
