I came across a tax list for Tuscaloosa County (at both the Birmingham & Tuscaloosa Libraries) called "Abstract of Estimates of Articles Due as Tax In-Kind Issued From Tuscaloosa in the 2nd Quarter Ending the 30th Day of June 1864", Transcribed by Richard C. Owens and June O. Reese, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, January 1991. It further states: The above microfilm negative taken from National Archives Record Group 109 Confederate Records - Microfilm Negative 35MM over Abst. of Est. Tax In-Kind Rec from Ass. Tuscaloosa, AL 1864 Chapter V, Vol. 199 1/5 Quartermaster Department. The tax act of 24 April 1863 (1 Cong. C.S.A. Stat. 122-125) levied a tax in kind on agricultural produce. Farmers were required to deliver one-tenth of the categories of goods listed below for use by the Confederate Government. There is a list of 21 agricultural products. Maybe there is a list for Bibb County (and others) out there somewhere... Need to ask a question that I have asked before to no avail. Does anyone know of where other 1848-1865 tax list can be obtained. I have seen the copy of the 1848 but have had no success in finding others. Would they be in the archives or in the Bibb County Annex? Help please.
