    1. [ALBIBB] Books digitized on FamilySearch.org

    3. The following was written by FamilySearch: FamilySearch Digital Preservation Initiative Hits a Milestone Salt Lake City, Utah-FamilySearch International reached a milestone today with the digitization of its 25,000th publication online. It began the initiative in 2007 and is ramping up to do even more-and faster. The effort targets published family, society, county, and town histories, as well as numerous other historical publications that are digitally preserved and made accessible for free online. The digital publications can be searched at www.FamilySearch.org (Go to FamilySearch.org, then click Search Records, then click Historical Books). The above notice was in Dick Eastman's Daily newsletter. Today I've browsed Alabama cemeteries from a publication called "Alabama Cemetery Records", copied by the Southern States Mission, 1946. Only a few cemeteries in each county are listed and then not every burial. But . . . there are some interesting notes by some of the names such as for Caffee Cemetery in Bibb, naming the relationships such as husband of, wife of, son of. The age of this document may help you locate old graves that are no longer visible if you are lucky enough to find your "missing person". The listing of relationships may also help identify that person whose parents you don't know. Of course, any new info needs to be proven by a more reliable source, if possible. I put in the keyword "ALABAMA" - no time today to finish perusing all that is there for Alabama. Caroline Horton, List Administrator

    3. The book is available from the compiler in Centreville as shown on the web site. It will probably only be sold locally so the proceeds will go to the Bibb Historical Society. I believe the labeling has to be done by the persons who submitted the pictures (haven't seen the book but I am pretty sure the px in the book are labeled). I know I need to label mine that are shown on the web site. 3. My great-great aunt, widow of John Hunt (who was maternal uncle to John Hunt Logan), either gave the land for the Presbyterian Church (old one before the one on the square on the other side of the river), and lived where the old high school was; or, gave land for both??? anyway, there was a connection. John Hunt went to Bibb Co., in 1818 with his 16 y.o. nephew, John Hunt Logan. John Hunt was first justice of peace for Bibb County. Was one of three appointed to determine the center of Bibb County, thus Centreville; and purchased the first lot of the newly surveyed Centreville.. don logan\ ----- Original Message ----- From: "caroline" <carolineh@knology.net> To: "BIBB" <ALBIBB@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 20, 2008 9:45 AM Subject: [ALBIBB] old Bibb County High School burned- Bibb book available > For those of you who may have missed the previous posting I am sending it > again ~ Caroline, List Administrator > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "caroline" <carolineh@knology.net> > To: "BIBB" <ALBIBB@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Thursday, December 18, 2008 11:32 AM > Subject: old Bibb County High School burned > > >>I received the email at the end of this posting yesterday, 12-17, about >>the >>school. 3. You "imagine it is ... coming out of someone smoking cigarettes." Well, you certainly have a good imagination, Stella. It is very difficult to start a fire from a cigarette. The unburned portion of a cigarette is dried leaves and paper -- have you ever seen one burst into flames? Have you ever tried to start a campfire using a cigarette? Forget it! The smoking-related fires you used to hear about were mostly in the days when people carried matches. Practically no one does anymore. In this case, we simply don't know what caused the fire, but cigarette smoking would be the most unlikely cause of all. The majority of construction and renovation-related accidental fires are linked to welding and plumbing jobs. The problem is so widespread, that OSHA and the Uniform Fire Code requires a trained employee to act as a "fire watcher" for 30 minutes after a welding or cutting job is completed within 35 feet of combustibles to ensure against smoldering materials blazing up. Unfortunately, many companies (especially small "mom & pop" renovation companies) ignore the requirement or aren't aware of it. 3. My Mother graduated from there in 1940 when it was still the high school. When we drove out of town last Tuesday I called it to my husband's attention. It was always the best looking property in Centreville. Most people don't travel up onto the hill to see the courthouse. I hope they take good care of that. I hate to say it, but I bet it was arson by someone who didn't want their tax dollars spent preserving it. It's just to sad that it is gone.
