    3. Hi, In the 1930s, I know there was a "Poor House" in Chilton County because my Ggrandfather Daniel Corley remarried while living there. Irma J. 3. Good idea, Liz, this topic came up before Christmas and I don't remember the time frame in question. I believe it was before the 1950's and I don't think there were any county or state regulations. But . . . it could still have been a county *owned* place of care and residence. Stella, great idea about goggling. Here's one site that came up http://www.poorhousestory.com/poorhouses_in_alabama.htm Interesting. I haven't looked at everything on that site or elsewhere. This site did mention a "poorhouse" in Tuscaloosa County (from 1860 census) and others (but not Bibb) as well as a law giving the county commissions responsibility for such and a good history of poor houses. 3. Poor Farms-Alabama It seems to me, these would be run by the county. Therefore, possibly a county record or another govt. entity? Look for who has jurisdiction and the records (county, state agency, etc). 3. Here's a response I received from Vicky Clemmons in Centreville re the question of "poor farms" or "old folks homes": This is referring to the early and mid 1900's I would think. I would also guess that the same was true in the 1800's - people were looked after by family. By the late 1950's in Walker Co.,there were nursing homes but still without much regulation at that time. "I asked Mrs. Bernice and she said there was no particular place, that family took care of their relatives and I also asked Bobby Pratt, his father was Ansley Pratt the town doctor, and he said that everyone stayed with relatives and doctors like his father made house calls, if they needed to go to the hospital they went to Selma, Tuscaloosa or Birmingham. I live in Dr. Stephen Meigs house and he to was a town doctor and this is how he worked. There were some boarding houses in Centreville and other towns, maybe this is what some were maybe referring to, in fact, Jerry Pow [Bibb Probate Judge] was born in a boarding house that sits where the [Courthouse] Annex is now." 3. Chilton Count Yahoogroups "Chilton@yahoogroups.com has a great deal of information in Henderson, Sims, Mims, and my personal favorite, Hill. Richard "Dick" H Hill was my GG Grandfather. My Great Grandfather was Charles Henry Hill Sr b 31 Mar 1886 married Rosa Mae Gentry 19 Apr 1908, and died 12 Dec 1939. I believe that his daughters Dorothy Louise and Evelyn Hill were responsible for the tombstone referenced in this thread. I am the grandson of Charles Henry Hill Jr who died after being run over by a train in Kansas in 1946. He had 2 sons my father Loy Orson Hill and Norman Henry Hill - both deceased. Have you been able to verify your story regarding Richard Hill? Other family members seem to think that Richard was adopted, and was the illegitimate son of a man from Virginia, or that his mother, supposedly named Elizabeth (age 15 when Richard was born) was Cherokee and lived in the Hill family lodging as a servant. Another story, I've recently heard is that Elizabeth died in a bar room brawl, as a prostitute, and the children were taken in by another family named either Glouster, Glouchester, Gutheridge, Gunther, or other name beginning with "G" until they could be adopted - I've also come across a reference to the name Mary as being a sister to Richard Hill, but no name for the other brother. There is also speculation, that James Washington (No Sir Name) was renamed to Richard Henry "Dick" Hill after being adopted or becoming part of the Hill family, although no adoption records can be found, that I am aware of. Does anyone have any more information? Please contact me at mahill510@gmail.com Regards Mark

    3. BIBB COUNTY, ALABAMA - ONLINE RESEARCH SOURCES *ALBIBB mail list archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ALBIBB/ . Search or browse the archives. ***Be sure to browse or search all the archives. There is lots of old, but good, info there when the list was really active. *Web page for Bibb at http://www.rootsweb.com/~albibb/ *Al Gen Web at www.algenweb.us *Alabama Pioneers at http://alabamapioneers.com/ *Vicky Clemmons in Centreville at vickclem@bellsouth.net . She *may* be able to make copies at the Bibb Co. courthouse, library and newspaper if they are available and will let you know cost. Family Search.org. A new resource is available on the Family Search Record pilot site: Alabama Statewide Deaths 1908-1974. There are no images, but the index provides more information than the index on Ancestry. This links directly to Ala deaths: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1307888 *Images of America - Bibb County was published in late 2008. The book is available by going to www.HistoricBibb.com . One section of the web site has pictures of people, documents and artifacts and additional information can be documented if you register. *Alabama death certificates (not certified). The index of death certificates from 1908 to 1959 has been put on microfilm and is in the Alabama Archives, online at Ancestry.com for members, and available at many LDS Family History Centers ( see above for familysearch.org. - note the extended dates) If your nearest FHC doesn't have the microfilm it can be ordered. If the certificate you want is in that time period and listed on the index a copy can be obtained for the cost charged at the facility that provides the film. Also, if you can get the information about a death certificate from that index you can obtain a copy of the certificate at http://alabamadeath.tripod.com/. Susette Cook, who runs the site, is a FHC volunteer and will provide copies (not certified ) for $3 each. *Alabama Dept. of Archives and History at http://www.archives.state.al.us/. You can do a search to see which newspapers and records for Bibb County are available. There is a fee for research but it is money well spent if you live out of traveling distance.
