Charlotte, Not sure if this is worth your time, but my gggrandmother Candace Yucatan Owens born 1861 in Scottsville, Bibb County, was an orphan, no knowledge of her parents or when they died, she had my grandmother in 1886, named Julia Emma Miller, but supposedly was widowed when my grandmother was born, yet I find a Candace Miller in the 1880 census for Bibb County Scottsville, noted to be an orphan, born 1861, and living with a married couple middle age, I think they had the surname Thomas, and I sometimes wonder if my gg grandmother had my grandmother out of wedlock and her maiden name was Miller all along. I don't have any information about her alleged maiden name of Owens and the unusual middle name of Yucatan, yet on her gravestone in Port Arthur Texas, it says Candace Y. Drouet, she married a Frenchman named Amand Drouet somewhere between 1886 and 1890 and they moved to Tennessee, had twin boys, and still had my grandmother, and then they moved to Texas, lived there until Droue! t deserted her in about 1904 and moved to Oklahoma. She somehow moved with the 3 children to Louisiana and ran a boarding house there until my grandmother married and moved to Port Arthur, Texas, where Candace moved and lived with my grandmother and grandfather until her death in 1924. On a 1900 Texas census, I find Candace and Amand Drouet (aka A.V. Drouet) and Candace's parents are listed as being born in England. Otherwise, I know zero about her background. The only family story grandmother (1886-1981) told me was about a woman (I don't remember who but could have been her mother's mother) was working in the fields on a farm and it began to hail and it killed her, before she could find cover. Could Candace's mother have been killed when Candace was small, and could Candace's father have been killed in the Civil War, or could both parents have been killed in the Civil War? I cannot find Candace Yucatan Owens in any census before she was married, and I have found no marriage records for her either. If you have any records to search for her name or any Owens in Bibb County during those years, I would appreciate it. I still need to do research on her at the LDS library in Dallas. Thanks. Stella, The "Index of Monuments" is a list of the graves with monuments. As with a lot of these old cemeteries, there are some unmarked graves. I just tried the links and they worked fine for me. I do know they are still working on the web site. If you continue to have a problem, let me know, and I'll be glad to pass the word to the page administrator. Just have to jump in here. My aunt, Hattie Thompson Thompson (Thompson was her maiden name and she married my Uncle, also a Thompson) owned Twix and Tween later and for many years. She may have bought it from the man that you mentioned. We always stopped there when we went to Brent/Centreville/Lawley for a treat....it was a great place and the food/ice cream was the best. My Dad loved the bar-b-que. You brought back memories. Caroline...I just bet...Walter and others could add more than I can about Centreville and T&T Bbq...back when. As I was remembering it..as it was, I suppose the street was much narrower...because we parked in front and used the front door...the buses pulled in back...people off the buses used the side door.I can't recall what was on corner that has service station and parking lot now...The waitress wrote out the ticket on little receipt books...and you went up front to pay on way out.The beautiful little lady (probably owner's wife) stuck it on a wire holder...rang up amount on a cash register. There were houses all around there,then..Belcher Lumber was well known, there across the highway, back aways. Big homes were in Centreville as I remember...with big lawns and trees.Brent was a long way to drive..., lol...times sure change. What I miss the most is the fields and things growing! Stella
Wonderful memories. There are only a few other places I'll stop for BBQ. One is the Green Top on the Walker-Jefferson line - the "County Line"; another is in Union Springs. Thanks for letting us know what it was like to eat at the original Twix N Tween. Hi Caroline, Melissa sent us a list some time ago that I kept showing the LSD Batch #s etc. for several counties in Al that was filmed. Marriage records can be searched by these batches and if a person wants to wiew the original they only need go to their local LSD Library (they are all over) and request it be sent to them for viewing. Here is the email document she sent. Bibb is the second on her list. Joni Family Search Batch Numbers Below are batch numbers I have made note of in my research searching familysearch.org (lds site). I hope they help you as much as they have me in finding "elusive" marriages because of misspellings, etc. To search by Batch# at familysearch.org, click on the "search" tab when the main page loads. Then click on "International Genealogical Index" (4th item down on left side of page). At this page you can enter as little or as much information as you have as long as you enter one of the batch numbers below and set the "region" to North America.
