I would also like a copy of the article. I believe that Mr. Vance may have been in the 11th Alabama along with my great uncle, Zachariah Abney. Caroline Horton, List Administrator] Hello, My name is Louise Huber. My great grandparents lived in Bibb Co.Al. They were Samuel C. Tucker and Mary Hunsucker Tucker. I don't know what the name of the cemetery is they were buried in. Can someone help me find it. I've searched all the cemeteries that are on here. If someone will check at the courthouse or church they might find their obituaries. But let me know what the charges are first. Hope to hear from yall. eugeneh@centurytel.net

Copy and paste the following web address: http://news.webshots.com/album/110479692HcjGJK?start=-16 The historical marker in one of the pictures gives the history of Piper. It states the coal mines were opened between 1901 and 1903. It also states that coal was first mined in the area by Thompson and sons who moved there and mined during the civil war. There is a more detailed history of the Thompson mines in "The Story of Coal and Iron in Alabama" by Ethel Armes, 1910. [reprinted in 1987 by Beechwood Books, Rt. 1, Box 870, Leeds Ala. 35094.]. Nothing is mentioned about a particular accident but it does say that "many died and graveyards mark the Lower and Upper Thompson mines". Another web site mentions James Walker's book - "The use of local history and oral accounts compares favorably with James H. Walker's The Struggle and the joy: An American Coal Town, Piper, Alabama (Birmingham, 1993)." Perhaps you can get these books from your library or by inter-library loan. John Blake appears often in our family. My gggreatgrandfather, John Blake (1766-1836) and his wife, Martha Ann Moon (1776- after 1837) came into Bibb County, AL when it opened for settlement ca 1819. They had a son, John Blake, who married Tabitha Haggard according to Old Cahaba County records 3 Jul 1820. They are shown on the 1850 Federal Census in Attala County, MS. On the 1860 Census his wife is shown as a widow with four children in Oktibbeha County, MS. My ggreatgrandfather, Archer Henry Blake (1795 --- 1874) named his first son John. That John was born in Cahaba (now Bibb) County 13 Jul 1820. He married Dicie Griffin in Bibb County, AL 23 Aug 1844. Apparently they never left Bibb County because they both are buried in the Pratt---Wallace Cemetery. I'm not sure any of this information would be helpful to you but I hope that it will open some doors for you. Winifred Allen Akridge **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. There was a man living near Ft Worth Texas who published the medical doctors patient list, a history of the Shchultz Baptist Church minutes, and several other fine documents. forget his name, but he was of the Blake lineage, and the Wallace. Since Logan family had twiced married with Wallace, he referred to us as Cousins.... Look under Wallace and find Blake interaction. I believe the entire group came from Edgefield District, SC. don ----- Original Message ----- From: <WHAWJA@aol.com> To: <albibb@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 24, 2008 4:47 PM Subject: Re: [ALBIBB] Seeking information about John Henry Blake,Please Help!! > John Blake appears often in our family. I have a picture of my gt. uncle Dr. Tom Smith at his family home. My mother identified it as being at Belle Sumter. Does anyone know if this was a community in Bibb County or Jefferson County? The picture dates ca 1890. Caroline
