According to Howard McCord's book, "Cemeteries of Bibb County, Alabama, 1817-1974" there is a "Perkins Graveyard" located 9 miles of Centreville, off Highway 5, turn right, go one mile. The gravestone Say "Mrs. N. F. Perkins, wife of E. B. Perkins, March 14, 1854 - September 26, 1883" and "Zachariah Young, December 6. 1812 - August 10, 1891." What is a straymaster. Can anyone out there help Me. Thank you in advance for your assistance. In reading a document I found the following: "It was ordered that Alexander McAllister deliver the whole of the book and papers belonging or appertaining to the office of Straymaster, now in his possession to David Smith. Ordered that David Smith, Esq be appointed Straymaster" Eva **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. I found this by using google. In the course of his duties, the Straymaster [also called Ranger] dealt with the valuable commodities of livestock and money. Therefore, it was an important position; oftentimes a Justice of the Peace served the role. Estray laws required anyone discovering a stray animal to deliver it to the Straymaster. The animal was listed in the Stray Book, and expenses of its care were also recorded. The County maintained a yard for these purposes or placed the animals with a citizen who supported it temporarily. Upon claiming his animal, an owner was liable for accumulated charges. After a period of time, unbranded, unclaimed animals were sold and the proceeds accrued to the County coffers. At 07:45 PM 6/18/2008, you wrote: >What is a straymaster. Can anyone out there help Me. Hi, Gary, I forgot to add that James Ammons is still living. He is listed in the Bessemer, Alabama phone book. He lives on Pocahontas Road. I am sort of related to him. His Cousin, William A. Ammons was my step-father. Irma J. Roy
Hi, Gary, I printed your query to look in my files and must have deleted it by mistake. According to the book, CEMETERIES OF JEFFERSON COUNTY, VOLUME 1, William H. Henderson is buried in Genery Gap Baptist Church Cemetery. This is a mistake. The cemetery has never been owned by the church, it is just located beside the Church. The Cemetery was started by William Genery when he buried his mother in 1872 . In the book, FAMILIES OF GENERY'S GAP, ALABAMA by Madge Pettit, she states "Today, more than a hundred years after the burial of Elizabeth Genery, the Genery Cemetery is still a fairly small rural cemetery, serviing a close-knit community. Most of the people buried there have roots going back several generations in the community, or are related by marriage into one of the old families." This Church is now named something else, but the cemetery is known as Macedonia or Genery Cemetery. From Bessemer, take Highway 150 until the intersection of Hwy 52 - Morgan Road. Travel on Morgan Road approximately 7 miles, past Interstate 459, past the road to the Bessemer Airport, up the hill to Shades Crest Road. Take a right on Shades Crest Road and the Church and Cemetery are located on the Left side of the road about 1/2 mile from the turn. Hope this helps some. Irma J. Roy

Help! I'm trying to find the cemetery that my Great-Great-Grandfather is buried in. I have information that indicates some references as to the location, but the exact spot is not known. I would like the cemetery to be entered onto the list of cemeteries in Alabama. What I have been told and have received information on is as follows: ========================================================== NOTE FROM Carol Elliott <laart@snowhill.com> August 4, 1998 The older Harmons and Hendersons are buried in the old Sturdavant cemetery, located several miles south from Shelby 52 on Stein's Bend of the Cahaba River where the old stage coach between Elyton (now Birmingham) and Montevallo forded the river. With fear fevers, the Hendersons and Harmons moved to higher ground on Shades Mountain in the area where Hwy I crosses Hwy 13. in 1881, WILLIAM H. HENDERSON, who had more than 400 acres there, married Nancy Jane Stewart, (parents: Leven Jefferson and Mary Jane Smith Stewart from GA). Their children included Sarah Jane, Jesse Dale, Mary Bell, William Hollie, Roxie Mae, Stella, Ivy Lillian, and Ollie Evelyn. William H.'s brother, HOLLY MIDDLETON, Jr., married Mary Etta Burns in 1885 and had at least 15 children. They formed a Mormon congregation, Hebron Church, in Shelby Co, before later moving to Utah. ========================================================== Additional information: My father's cousin, Derrell Judd, from Provo, Utah, travelled to Alabama twenty-thirty years ago and was taken to the cemetery by Mr. James Ammons. I have photographs of Hollie Middleton Henderson's and his wife Sarah's grave stones. Also a commemerative CSA marker. So I know the cemetery does exist. Also, it was told to me that there were two or three headstones with names/dates and a few more small stones with initials only. Also they indicated that depressions in the ground would lead them to believe there would be upwards of twenty or more persons buried in the immediate area. Thanks for any exact directions to this cemetery and if anyone can physically locate it with GPS, it would be nice to get it added to the Register of Cemeteries. Regards, Gary Odell Henderson - Meridian, Idaho </HTML>
