Does anyone know which would be the closest family history society that, hopefully, would have transcribed the MIs. For instance, is there one closer than Edson? I am hoping that graves on Shining Bank farms would have been recorded, as well as Edson cemeteries. The WAITEs owned a quarter section at Shining Bank. They immigrated from England in 1907 and i am wondering if they acquired the land from an immigrant scheme/crown grant kind of thing. I'm stretching for the right description here! Also, how would they have made a living off the land - crops, cattle? thank you for reading. June
Hi June; I'm the web master & Co-ordinator for Big Lakes County in Alberta, Canada. You can find many links to all sorts of information. Hope you find something that will be helpful in your family research. See; http://rootsweb.com/%7Eabbiglak/biglakes.html I did an on line search for Edson, AB, (Canadian sites only) & found all sorts of links. You might try to contact the local newspaper - they should be able to help you with all sorts of answers. See: http://www.weeklyanchor.com/ The closest AGS would most likely be in Calgary, AB but maybe the one in Edmonton, AB may be as good. I have something for Edmonton you might follow up on, at; http://agsedm.edmonton.ab.ca/ They would likely have been among the pioneer farmers; growing grain for feed or for selling it & raising cattle for milk, meat or for shipment. They likely built a log house, heated with wood in pot bellied stoves, cooked on wood burning ranges, had no running water, no paved highways, no telephones, no electricity & used outdoor 'out-houses' (toilets)- where some of us did our wishful shopping while looking at the Sears or Eaton's catalogues (our toilet paper of the day). The closest elementary school could have been three miles away - we walked or rode horseback. Those were the good old days!!.
