The first directory to cover what is now Alberta was published in 1884; it was Henderson's directory of Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. The first few were relatively small; they doubled in size within about five years. But even then, it's doubtful they had enumerators looking at anything but the biggest centres; bear in mind that even in the 1880s, Alberta was still in the early stages of settlement.
