Greetings All. FYI. The latest issue of 'Gordon Watts Reports' has now been posted online. It can be accessed at http://globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/gazgw/gazgw-0092.htm Topics in this week's issue include: In Memorium - Ryan Taylor Images of Nova Scotia 1870 - 1940 British school children contest in 1900s Federal programs cut - Canada A lesson learned Readers of my column may also be interested in viewing the "featured web site" of the latest issue of the Global Gazette. This "featured web site" is the Halifax Explosion Remembrance Book -- a database listing of all those who died in the explosion that took place 6 December 1917. The Halifax Explosion Remembrance Book was originally developed in 2002 as a commemorative project sponsored by the Halifax Foundation and its chair, the late Edmund Morris, a former city mayor, to mark the 85th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion. The objective of the project, an exhibition of Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management, was to compile a definitive listing of the known dead from the disaster of 6 December 1917. Two end-products resulted: a fully searchable electronic database for extended research purposes; and an abbreviated, limited-edition version produced in paper format for general display and reference use. The database contains 1,950 names of the men, women and children known to have died either in the Explosion, in the days immediately after, or in the following months as a direct result of the events of 6 December. The supporting information provided in the database, fully referenced and sourced in this online version, was compiled by searching various records held at Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management. Dear Arlene, When I am searching for probated wills for inheritance tracing, I start with the Succession Duties Department with the Public Trustee's Office in the Brownlee building in Edmonton(780) 427-2744 . They help me determine in which judicial district the person died in or which judicial district where they owned their property, this is where usually probate is granted. They usually then tell me what court house to call to find a copy of the probated will. Probated wills are supposed to be archived in the court houses, but I have found in the past the names to be on file but the clerks unable to find the will as well. You said that the person died in 1960, and if he died in Edmonton, Athabasca, Northwest Territories, the probated will might be found at the Provincial Archives of Alberta here in Edmonton. Their files include probates, affidavits, copies of wills, oaths of Executers and Letters of Administration. They have large indexed binders of names for people to research. If the person who died was a man, and he was survived by his wife, I have seen some instances too where the will was not probated till his wife's death so it would be a good idea to research her death date too. The cost per court house search was $10.00 a couple of years ago. Then the photocopy cost was $1.00 per page plus GST. At the Provincial Archives they charged 35c plus GST per page for photocopies but you had to sign a release form as to why you were requesting a copy of the will. I've seen wills as short as 4 pages and wills with accompanying documentation to 150 pages. So you never know what you are gonna find. I hope that helps. I have been trying for several years to obtain a copy of a Will that I know exists and and was probated but cannot seem to find the right place within the Government of Alberta. The year is 1960/61 the person died in September 1960 and a search was begun in Nov 1960 for any living relatives in Scotland and his estate was held in trust by the Public trustee of Alberta until the number of living relatives was determined. I know that 3 relatives were confirmed but no copy of the will survived or could be found from these 3 relatives so am now trying to get a copy from Alberta. I was a wee bit distressed to receive the following There is no central registry of wills in the Province of Alberta. So how would one ever find out if the will probated was the "last will and testament" of the person if there is not central location for storing probated wills within the Government of Alberta. Arlene
