Ann-Marie: There is a marriage certificate for Albert and Annie Hughes at: http://web2.gov.mb.ca/cca/vital/ListView.php The year is 1896. Emily Gough married Albert Hughes in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England 1886. They went to Banff, Alberta about 1887, Albert worked at the Sanitarium, Banff he was a Druggist (chemist). He worked along side a Dr Brett, in some records it says they were in partnership. I have a letter to Emily's brother Phillip Gough sent by Albert Hughes 31st March 1889 saying that he had caught Emily in some indiscretion so he had given her £28 fare back to England. He heard she had got as far as Winnipeg and then gone on to the USA that he says was 18 months ago. He said he had divorced her. He also says that he had remarried. He didn't until 1895 unless there was another wife in-between 1889 and 1895. He also appears to give his age as 11 years younger than it is in the 1901 census. He was baptised 1849, Emily was born 1863 and his second wife Annie 1869. I found details about him on the Pioneers site. So far nothing he says ties up with what I have discovered on the internet. He moved from Banff about 1890 to Medicine Hat, he worked as a druggist for about two years then raised horses. He married an Annie Wallace 1895 in Winnipeg and they had about four children. The letter and the facts don't seem to tie in and I am at a loss at how I could find Emily and what happened to her. Has anyone any ideas please. Ann-Marie: There is an Emily Hughes who died in Winnipeg in 1934 age 68 years birthdate Aug 19, 1865 which can be found on the Manitoba vital stats website at: http://web2.gov.mb.ca/cca/vital/ListView.php It is close to the right age and you could send for the full death certificate which would have more information on it than what is on the website. THANK YOU, Shirley! The part that is confusing is that the Norway records show that he married Leverine (Laverne) in 1914, in Sokndal, then the passenger records show that Olaus came back to Canada the same year. There is no record of his wife coming with him. The Western Land Grants for Canada show that he homesteaded another property in 1917-ish. Hummmm.....
