    1. [ALBERTA] Albert Hughes and Emily nee Gough
    2. Ann-Marie Roberts
    3. Hi, any advice anyone can give me concerning Albert Hughes and his first wife Emily Gough will be much appreciated. As I mentioned in previous mail Albert and Emily married 1886 in England. They travelled to Banff in 1887. Albert was a chemist (druggist) and he worked at Banff Santarium, with a Dr Brett. He wrote a letter,31st March 1889 which was obviously a reply, to Emily's brother, Phillip Gough, stating he had divorced Emily (Emma) and remarried a far nicer woman, as he had caught Emily with another man. To me it seemed rather quick to divorce someone and the tone of the letter was very matter of fact, considering it was to Emily's brother who must have been concerned as to his sisters welfare. I found no trace of a divorce, neither has the Library and Archives of Canada, so I have been told today. Albert remarried in 1896 to a lady from England and it was mentioned in the local Medicine Hat newspaper where he had a drug store. They had about four children. So he had obviously lied. Why? I am not sure what my next move should be. He said Emily had gone to USA and was living with a man. I just feel whether Emily was good or bad I need to know what happened to her and was Albert a bigamist. Surely he would be afraid of her turning up again or her family pursuing it. Or did they believe him because Emily had a reputation and he was quite a lot older and a business man with a good family background. Not quite sure where to go now, but I don't wish to upset any descendants of Albert. Ann-Marie

    1. [ALBERTA] The Census Taker:
    2. BLANCHARD
    3. Hi; I thought this was quite neat since some of us are transcribing the 1911 Canada Census. Cheers Martha The Census Taker It was the first day of the census, and all through the land The pollster was ready. A black book in his hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face, And wisps of brown hair she tucked back in place. She gave him some water as they sat at the table, And she answered his questions as best she was able. He asked of her children...yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red. His sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride, As she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head, And he saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot." Was it Kansas, or Utah? Or Oregon.. Or not? They came from Lithuania, of that she was clear, But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such. They could read some, and write some, though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done, So he mounted his horse and he rode towards the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear, "May god bless you all for another ten years!" Now picture a time warp, it's now you and me As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow, As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could we only imagine on that long ago day That the entries they made would affect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear, if we listen, the words they impart Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Author unknown.

It's amazing that you found all this information on him, as I have been seraching for about two years. The only think I found was a re-typed newspapaer article with credits for the Edmonton Bulletin, and Edmonton Daily Bulletin. The archivist for these papers says this article is not in their records. Is RB a relative of yours? I am seeking additional information on him because he argued a won a battle with father LeMarchand over my grandfather and his brothers and sisters. My great-grandfather disappeared from his (Legal) homestead around 1910/1911 and Father LeMarchand said the Catholic Church was responsible for the children, RB said the government was. So all the children were placed in RB's orphange and adopted out, their mother declared unable to care for them by the Privy Council of Canada, and the land held in trust by Father LeMarchand.
