Dear Listers: A visit is planned this Summer to Alberta to locate a homestead and a grandmother's gravesite. The only clues thus far are a Land Grant (homestead) and a Death Certificate. Unfortunately, the legal description given on each document are different. Land Grant: To Albert WAITE, NE1/4, Sec.19, Twp.56, Range 13, W5M. Death Certificate: Elizabeth Ann WAITE, buried on farm - SE1/4, Sec.16, Twp.54, Range 16, W5M. The Land Grant was made in 1920 and the death was in 1935. Does anyone have survey maps that would make identifying these properties easy? We have no idea where they would be. Alternatively, Is there anywhere on the Net that we could look at survey maps ourselves? Would really appreciate some help with this conundrum. thank you for reading June

Author: gberdahl Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.alberta.general/4392/mb.ashx Message Board Post: As many of you know, in 2005 the Alberta Genealogical Society produced a searchable online "all-name" index that includes the names of every person who is listed as having some interest in Alberta homestead lands that had been "proved up" and patented by 1930. In 1930 the Canadian government turned the homesteading process over to the individual provinces. The Edmonton Branch of the Alberta Genealogical Society has now produced a new searchable online "all-name" index that covers Alberta homesteads patented after 1930. This new index, as well as the earlier 1870-1930 index, can be found at http://abgensoc.ca/ . It should be noted that although the new post-1930 index (which includes records for homesteading activities as early as 1900) already contains almost 45,000 names, there are many tens of thousands of more names to come as data continues to be transcribed and entered. So if you have someone who you think may have homesteaded in Alberta, and you have not yet found a homestead record for that person, you should check the new post-1930 index regularly. In the late 1800's and early 1900's people from all over the world came to western Canada to take advantage of cheap, newly available farm land, commonly known as homesteads. For several years Library and Archives Canada (formerly National Archives of Canada) has published an searchable online index containing the names of the persons who were successful in "proving up" their western Canadian homesteads and obtaining final patent (ownership) for these lands. This index can be found at http://www.collectionscanada.ca/02/020111_e.html . However, for every person who ultimately obtained patent on homestead land there were many others who applied for homesteads but, for various reasons, did not receive patent. And there were many more who had some other interest in the same homestead lands, even though they themselves may not have even applied for the homestead. The two AGS indexes allow you to search for the names of these hundreds of thousands of other early Albertans. The "Advanced Search" option will allow you to search not only by the "Exact Match" spelling of the name, but also by the very useful "Starts With", "Ends With", "Contains" and "Wild Card Search" search methods. Furthermore, you can search not only by the person's name but also by the legal land location or, in some cases, place name. The indexes include name listings for ranches, churches, schools, cemeteries, municipalities, societies, companies and other organizations that had an interest in homestead lands. Copies of the microfilmed Alberta homestead files are held at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. For those who are able to search these files in person, the online homestead indexes will identify the microfilm reel and homestead file number where the name appears, thus saving considerable time and effort when trying to find the file. Or, if you wish, the Alberta Genealogical Society will obtain photocopies of homestead files for you and you can find out how to arrange for this at http://abgensoc.ca/ . These two homestead indexes will provide genealogists and family historians with much valuable information regarding their early Alberta ancestors and relatives. Hello Everyone. What can I say but thank you all very , very much. I have had quite a few replies about this family and from all those replies put together quite a good family. Of course a lot of it came from that wonderful story on Our Roots. What a great idea. Now I will have to see if I can get a few names and dates to fit all the grand children that John appears to have had. I see I have also been sent a copy of the phone book as well , so in the next few days, will have a look through that and see if I can find any Chinnery's or Deering's mentioned and do some letter writing . Can always hope. My thanks to a wonderful line once again. Rhonda ( Australia )

Greetings All. I copy below for your interest a letter sent yesterday to the editor of The National Post in response to an article by Meagan Fitzpatrick. The letter has been acknowledged with a note that it will be considered for publication. Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, British Columbia Read my column, 'Gordon Watts Reports' at http://globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/authors/authgw.htm ========================================= 15 March 2007 Editor. The National Post. Re: "More than half of Canadians willing to share information" In her 14 March article Meagan Fitzpatrick stated "The 2006 Census, for the first time, gave Canadians the opportunity to choose to have their census information made available to the public in 92 years..." The implication of this statement is that never before in the history of Canada has information from Census been made available to the public. Unfortunately, Ms. Fitzpatrick, along with the general public, has been misled by information provided by Statistics Canada. In actual fact, for the first time in history Canadians had the opportunity to prevent information they provide to Census from being released to the public after a period of closure. For genealogical and historic research purposes this is a major step backward. For censuses prior to 2006, information for all respondents has been made available to the public after a period of closure. Up to 1980 that period of closure was governed simply by archival practice, which was generally considered to be about 100 years. With the passage of the Privacy and Access to Information Acts in 1980 to 1983 the period of closure was legally mandated, for the first time, at 92 years. Statistics Canada would have the public believe that the 'informed consent' (or 92-year) question was something sought after by genealogists and historians. Nothing could be further from the truth. Opposition to such a question is a matter of record in Hansard records of Senate Committee hearings. Regulations attached to the Privacy Act clearly state public access to Census records is allowed for purposes of research, after a 92-year period of closure. That access however was being prevented, through a technical loophole invoked by Chief Statistician Ivan P. Fellegi After an eight year campaign to regain access to Historic Census records, genealogists and historians were coerced into not opposing imposition of an 'informed consent' question in Bill S-18. They were advised that unless they agreed not to oppose the question, the government would not present the Bill to restore unfettered access (after 92 years) to Censuses up to 2005. With an overall positive response to the question of less than 56 percent, the 2006 Census has been destroyed as a complete and viable research tool for genealogists and historians. For more than 44 percent of Canadians, future genealogists will find no mention of their ancestors in the Census. No longer will historians be able to compile a complete demographic picture of the Canadian family through Census. It is a tragedy that defies comprehension. Gordon A.
