Posted on: General Alberta<br>Canada Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Canada/Alberta/General/11458 Surname: Eacott ------------------------- The surname "Eacott" was by all accounts pronounced as "Ecutt" or "Ecott" from early times, the "Ea" being pronounced the same as the "ea" in "feather", "leather", "weather" etc. and because of the pronunciation it has been spelt many different ways over the years as others have written it as they heard it spoken. My own ancestor "Thomas Eacott" came to Australia from Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England in 1830. Even though he was illiterate he knew how his name was written, and because he retained the spelling I was able to find his family on the Sutton Veny Parish records. To this day however, the name continues to be pronounced as "Ecutt" except by some families who have changed to "Ea" as in "Peach" because of the many spelling difficulties that arise when pronounced the "old" way. There is every chance that your mother's family link into the Eacott family. When searching old records the name seems to be pretty much isolated to the southern part of England and I think probably originated around Gloucester. It may not have been Eacott to start with, but has been Eacott since the 1700's that I am aware of. John Eacott in Canada believes that the name may have started in England as Eycott. I don't discount that theory, but I was told by a man with a background in the study of the origins of surnames that it was most probably a shortened version of eastcott (cott being Anglo Saxon for cottage, haven or dwelling place) thus when surnames came into being, the dwellers of East cottage took on the surname of Eastcott shortened to Eacott and the same with Westcott (Wescott), Northcott (Norcott) etc. I am in possession of a book about Sutton Veny which indicates that in that region South was pronounced as Sut (Sutton Veny meaning South on the Fenn).

Hi, I asked a friend about this and below is her reply. Often they can refer to municipal districts or school districts (which do not appear on maps) rather than villages, towns or cities. They can be difficult to track down. Municipal districts and post offices were often used when vital statistics were registered. I would think this is likely the area you are looking for. I hope this helps to narrow down your research. According to records at the PAA my grandmother taught school in 1919 - 1920 in the Metropolitan School District (#1737) Bk. 01 while her husband was teaching at Overleigh. I know that the family was living close to Kinsella during that time. Can someone tell me where this school or school district might be?
I am looking for additional information on Christopher APPLETON's family. The following is what I have to date. These people have probably spread throughout Canada. Christopher's first wife died in Winnipeg in 1910. He remarried and continued to live there until sometime around 1930 or so. Christopher was involved in the game of Cricket in Winnipeg and his name along with that of his brother is mentioned in the archives of the Free Press. Looking for information on the Fred SURRY family who came from London, England to the Galahad area about 1909. Fred taught in rural schools from about 1909 to 1922 (in the Galahad, Sedgewick, Lougheed and Kinsella areas). His wife Jessie was a talented musician and teacher. I know she taught in the Metropolitan School at least one year. (I have no idea where that school would be). Fred taught in the following schools (can someone help with the "locations" of these schools?) Dunmore Sept. 1, 1909 to Dec. 31 1909 Rosensoll Village Sept 1909 " June 1911 Kelly School Jan. 9 1912 " Nov. 30 1912 Pleasington Dec. 1 1912 " Dec. 30 1914 Wardville Aug. 2 1915 " Dec. 30 1916 Hill Park Mar. 1 1917 " Dec. 30 1918 Overleigh Jan 1919 " Dec. 1919 At about 1920 the family moved to Kinsella where Fred operated a farm (NE 36 45 12 W4) as well as taught. The Surrys were both quite talented musically and often arranged entertainment and cantatas at the school. Often they would hold forth musically on Sunday Church outings. The children were: Norman (killed in 1918 in France); Douglas (died age 20 in Sedgewick); Alan (b. 1908); Rita (b. 1910); Enid (b. 1914); Hector (b. 1917); Ronald (b. 1918); Daphne (b. 1921 Kinsella). The family moved into Edmonton about 1922 where Fred taught for a while; then operated a News, Book, Stamp, Coin Store until his death in 1944. Jessie taught voice and piano until 1968. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Looking for information about an Alexander D. MacKENZIE (known, I believe, as "A.D.") family and their farm just north of Penhold from at least about 1900 to 1931. Looking for information about the Daniel Bethune family and their farm in Penhold. The family moved to Alberta in 1905 where Daniel purchased 480 acres of land three miles from Penhold. A member of that family was related to the MacKenzie family of PEI, and had a relative in Edmonton. Daniel's wife was "Cassie" (or Catherine MacKenzie) whose brother was A.D. or Alexander D. MacKenzie who also owned land near Penhold. Daniel remarried about 1920 (Cassie had died about 1915) to Elizabeth or "Lizzie" about 1920.

But the place is mentioned in the Local History Book "In the Bend of the Battle: A History of Alliance and District." So it must be in that Area of Alliance some 100 miles south east of Edmonton.
