Posted on: General Alberta<br>Canada Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/Canada/Alberta/General/11565 Surname: Pilkington, Cripps ------------------------- My ancestors, John and Mary Pilkington and their children, Joseph (nee Rimmer) and Mary (birth certificate says Myra) came to Cranbrook from Lancashire, England, about 1905 then settled in Alberta, but were in Vancouver by 1911. We can't find Joseph, born 1894 in Lancashire. He served in WWI, came home injured and then disappeared. The Canadian Military can't find a record for him under Pilkington or Rimmer. I'm hoping to find ships' lists to search for their names and their traveling companions the Cripps family. You may reach me at judmglad@yahoo.com or at judmglad@lds.net Sometimes I can't get Yahoo but, if I'm at my children's I can't get lds.net. thank you
Recently someone from Norway was asking about finding land records. I found the following site; NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF CANADA at http://www.archives.ca/02/020202/02020207_e.html You can search in each province, it gives the addresses where to write. Hope this helps, Martha

Hi List Does any one know where i can get the 1901 census of Medicine Hat and Tabor Alberta online?
It's kind of quiet today, so I'll pose a question. My BUBB family supposedly left Wales in 1906 for Alberta. If they left from Cardiff, where were the common points of arrival for someone heading for Alberta? And, where might I find arrival records? I'm still trying to break that brick wall. Thanks for any help. Pam Gundy Crowell from a partly sunny and somewhat cool Santa Cruz, California
Hello everybody, if I want to find out more about a Birthrecord, how can I do that. In BC people can go into the Archives and have a look at the records and make their own copies. Are the Alberta Archives open to the public too and would somebody be willing to do a Lookup and make a copy for me? If this is not possible, what's the best way to order a copy of the registration. I need the birthregistration of Viola Pike, born on Feb. 12, 1916 in Abilene Alberta, daughter of Walter Harold Pike and Mary Koranda. Thank you very much.
Thank you list for all who responded. I will follow all ideas suggested. Sincerely, Barry H.
Hello list, I'm presently searching for a local outlet for the Drumheller Review Newspaper, April 10, 1914- June 27,1940 ,does anyone know where in Edmonton I may find this Drumheller Newspaper on microfilm? Barry H.
Dear Listers, In Vancouver, B.C. (1980) someone very close to me changed their entire name and, yes, it was a requirement that one had to notify the Dept. of Vital Statistics and it was then required to be published in the paper. In fact I believe you had to show evidence of the publication by sending a copy of the section of the paper to a specific Vital Statistics department. There was a section in the classified ad portion of the 'Vancouver Sun' newspaper titled 'change of names' and it is surprising how many various name changes were entered there. I believe the fee was only $10.00 to do this! I hope this information is of help. Unfortunately I have not been following the story of Jarek's uncle so am not sure what the dates involved were. I wonder how easy it would be to get old copies of the Vancouver Sun newspaper. It would of course help to know approximately when the change of name may have occurred. Best of luck with this search. Alannah
Hi Stella; It's odd for someone to disappear like this Andrzej seems to have. I was wondering if perhaps asking the Edmonton City Police or the RCMP in Edmonton would be a place to start? I have been following the suggestions regarding Jarek's lost uncle in Canada, and the possibility of him changing his name. If the uncle changed his name, wouldn't he have had the application processed through the Vital Statistics Agency in the appropriate province? And don't "change of name" notices get published in the local papers? I now live in the US, but was born and raised in BC. I've been out of Canada for over 10 years, so perhaps I am off-base with this suggestion. Could someone please correct me if I'm wrong, or elaborate with more facts if I am correct? Hi all, I think one has to apply to change a name legally. I thought about that once, to add my maiden name to my married last name, same for the children. It's quite expensive. One has to apply, can't remember where, then it has to be advertised in the local newspaper, in my case it would have been the North Shore news and it also has to be advertised in the Government Gazette. This was what they told me about 10 years ago in BC. It might be worth checking into in BC and Alberta. There might be some records on file. Hi Laura, I believe that a person can change their name without going through a legal process - as long as they are not changing their name for illegal purposes. I don't believe that we can constantly change our names ( it would appear suspicious).- one would need to prove that the new name - has been in constant use - and that one is known in business, and personally by that name. for it to be accepted . In this case - the name may be changed just to Anglicize it, The first name is simple - as it would be Andrew - the other - might depend on a direct translation ( if there is one), a few changes in the letters of the name - or perhaps a complete change. It is quite difficult - even in these days - to have a name that many would find difficult to pronounce. Since Andrej - apparently did not have a permanent residence - but stayed (in Vancouver at least ) in Hotels. He can not be traced by telephone number. Many people change their given names - to something that they like - rather than live with a name they may not feel compliments them, In most cases they would not take legal measures to change this. (eg. My cousin Olga - has been known since school days - as Isobel - which suits her much better)Another cousin Olga - has always been known as Helen . Hello again ,Jarek OR LADY QUEEN OF POLAND - ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH: Has an e mail address: well worth sending a message, they may be able to help. Stella
Hello Jarek, I know that you have been searching for your uncle for some time now. Not everyone belongs to the genealogy mailing lists. Sadly - unless people on our mailing lists - knew your uncle - your search may still take a long time, especially since there is the possibility that he may have changed his name. It appears that he has spent at least his time in Vancouver - living in Hotels. -so - his name would not appear in any telephone directory. It also looks like he used Post Office Boxes in Montreal and Edmonton - which probably means that he was not in a permanent residence Since the last known place that he lived was in Edmonton - Perhaps a Letter to the Editor of one of the Edmonton Newspapers - would be of help in possibly locating your uncle. Most families will probably have the newspaper - and they are also available to read in some restaurants, Public libraries etc - so your search would have greater coverage. Also : since your uncle had also considered moving back to Vancouver: - a letter to the editor of the Vancouver Sun and Vancouver Province Newspapers could help. A letter to the editor of the Vancouver Courier - a smaller newspaper - might also be of help - as it is available free - it is an excellent paper. (A few weeks ago - a man in England wrote to the editor of the Courier - searching for his 97 year old relative - and found her and her daughter - so there is hope).
