    1. [ALBERTA] Marriage Registration Questions
    2. Deborah Stitt
    3. Hello, I want to obtain a copy of the marriage registration of my husband's grandparents William Ross Stitt and Mary Christine Grant from 1914 in Calgary, Alberta. They were from Ontario but their son's birth certificate says they were married in Calgary. I am confused on how to go about getting a copy of the marriage registration. The process seems to be different than when I obtained the birth certificate for my husband's father in Ontario. I read the instructions on how to do it from the Canadian Archives web site but do I understand it correctly that I just write a letter to Vital Statistics or a registry office? Is there a form to fill out? How much is the fee? What is a registry office? Any help anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Deborah Stitt Clearwater, FL USA ddstitt@yahoo.com http://home.tampabay.rr.com/debs/ Researching: County Antrim, Ireland -------> Ontario, Canada: Stitt Scotland ------> Ontario, Canada: Ross, Ferguson Ontario, Canada: Grant, McGiffen, Nettleton _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. [ALBERTA] Request for Assistance - Athabaska
    2. Sarah Murtagh
    3. Hi, May name is Sarah Murtagh and I've just joined this list. I came across a book index "From Out of the Wilderness - Baptiste Lake - Athabaska" which mentions a great uncle of mine - Martin William Hitchins (and wife Monica) who remains somewhat of a mystery. He left England, travelled to Chicago, Illinois and then travelled to Canada (Alberta) in 1911, according to the two letters we found from him dated 1956. Would someone who could do a look-up for me in either this book or "Athabaska Landing: An Illustrated History", please contact me privately. I'm not sure if this second book mentions my great-uncle or not. And as well, could someone tell me if there are cemetery records that I could access (hopefully on-line) for the town of Athabaska, or a historical society for Athabaska. Thanks for reading this request. Sarah Murtagh London, Ontario

    1. [ALBERTA] Name Change in Alberta:
    2. BLANCHARD
    3. For those who were asking about one changing their name, this was offered by a person who did it in Alberta. Hope this helps answer some questions, Martha. CHANGING YOUR OWN NAME If you want to change your name you do not have to change it legally. You can just decide what you would like your name to be and then tell people like your family, friends, employer and co-workers that you would like them to call you by the new name. This is called changing your name by common usage. Once people have begun to call you by that name, you can have your identification changed to your new name; you might need to make an oath stating that people now call you by your new name for some identification changes. Also, you can change your signature to your new name and put your new name on legal documents. Remember that you can not change your name if you are trying to get out of having to pay money back that you owe, or for any other fraudulent reason. You can make an application to change your name under the Change of Name Act if you want to legally change your name. Making a legal name change is the only way to get a new birth certificate with your new name on it. To change your name legally you must be at least 18 years old and you must be a resident of Alberta. You can also change your name by completing a deed poll, which is a formal declaration stating that you now want to be called by a new name. This is a free community service provided by University of Alberta Law Students I had relatives that came to Canada in 1908 from Norway they changed their last name as people used to call them goose-head (or something similar), that's how it looked like they should pronounce it, they changed it to Torgersen-not even close to their original name:)

    1. [ALBERTA] UNCLE HAROLD NICHOL BLOWN UP!
    2. Keitha Amdam
    3. Help! We have a family reunion coming up in August and the family is waiting to see if I, "the family genealogist" will come up with the answer... Harold Nichol was my great uncle. He was single and travelled from one good money-making job to the next. Did a lot of mining etc. According to family lore he stumbled drunk into an "explosion" field while making a "right of way" (for either a road or train?) and sat down on a keg of dynamite. Of course you can imagine what happened next. Other versions of the story are that he was in a mine and someone mishandled a box of nitro of whom Uncle Harold was standing beside... Accordingly there was nothing to bury or cremate so that resource of information is nil. I found an older relative who has a piece of correspondence from another relative stating "Uncle Harold was killed at Clearwater." Because we are a BC family I searched Clearwater, BC and Clearwater, Washington and Clearwater, Idaho. I just found out there is a CLEARWATER, ALBERTA! Can someone help me with this? I would be indebted to you forever! Any of your older family members recall a man being blown up in their working days? According to the person who wrote the correspondence I am thinking that he was killed in the late 1930's to very early 1940's. My logic tells me that this information is not that old and I should be able to get it quite easily but this has not been the case!
