    1. Re: [ALBERTA] Osama not appropriate
    2. The problem is that people of many backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, etc., may subscribe to these lists. I think we need to be sensitive to that. I think that what was said was in poor taste--no matter who it might have been said about. Whether the heading was genealogically oriented or not, I think that anyone subscribing to these lists has a right to "take its temperature" by seeing what is being commented on in these posts. We all need something to smile about, but I'm not going to laugh at someone else's expense, even if that person is Osama Bin Laden. Sorry, but that's just how I feel. Frankly, I am tired of finding any references to the events of the last month on genealogy lists. If I wanted to see that, I would subscribe to an appropriate list. I think these lists should be used only for the reasons that we all subscribe to them--namely genealogy.

    3. Re the message from kiwicanucks@canada.com, that the Osama joke was inappropriate for a genealogy list. For Heaven's sake, is it a crime to have a joke go thru every once in awhile, something to make you smile. I don't understand why people on the list get so upset because every so often, someone gets a cute email they'd like to share with their friends (and that's what the list becomes, is our friends), or they hear something that might bring a smile to someones face, or might brighten an otherwise gloomy day. What is the harm. You could tell by the subject line that the message was not genealogical, so why did you read it. Perhaps you thought it was someone tracing his family history? Smile a little. Pat

    3. Hi, figured I'd post my guys again. I don't even know if they were Albertans. I am looking foran Oren Janes who supposedly had twin daughters and a son by 1901 in Alberta. This man had a wife and kids in BC. (??). He was employed by a cattle company traveling all over buying cows. I almost wonder if he had 2 wives? He was gone for long periods of time. 3. Dear Elaine and others, I sub to the Alberta list and many others and have seen this "joke' and many similar in the past month. While it may be "off topic' I see it a symptomatic of the underlying uneasiness we are all trying to cope with these days. As someone once say if you can't say something nice about what you just read press the delete key! We all have enough pain to deal with these days without being overly sensitive to a few words. God Bless Canada and America and all who read this.(even if the just hit the delete key!) Remember Canadians died at the WTC too. Holding him prisoner will inspire his comrades to take hostages to demand his release. Therefore, I suggest we do neither. Let the SAS, Seals or whatever covertly capture him... Fly him to an undisclosed hospital. Have surgeons quickly perform a complete sex change operation. Then we return 'her' to Afghanistan... To live as a "woman" under the Taliban. Whaddya think?

    1. [ALBERTA] Post 1901 Census -- New totals posted
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. Since my return frrom Ottawa I have made more than 500 updates to files for MPs and Senators correspondence logs on the Post 1901 Census Project website at the URL following my signature. As of this morning all files sent have been loaded to the server and new totals are shown online. Senators show FOR -- 18 AGAINST -- 2 NON-COMMITTAL -- 12 NO RESPONSE -- 64 MPs show FOR -- 131 AGAINST -- 9 NON-COMMITTAL -- 67 NO RESPONSE -- 94 Ontario and Quebec are still showing a lot of blue question marks which indicate we have received no letters of response from those MPs and Senators. We would appreciate having any responses received from them so that we can add them to their correspondence logs and update the totals. Letters and email to our representatives in Ottawa, and signatures on petitions are still needed to show them that we have not forgotten our need to regain public access to Historic Census Records. We must keep the pressure on them until we have succeeded in our goal. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [ALBERTA] Post-1901 Census :- Many Senators Need Letters -- Postage is FREE
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all who wish to support Senator Lorna Milne:- Support of Senator Lorna Milne and her Bill S-12 could lead to release of Post-1901 Canadian census records. The records are safe at National Archives -- but you and I are prevented from viewing OUR own history. The last Scoreboards posted by Gordon Watts are from October 1, 2001 -- to date no GOLD TICK AWARDS have been posted by Gordon, whether Senate or House of Commons. Check http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census Scoreboards for both Senate and House of Commons are there. Re the SENATE, the Oct. 1/01 numbers read:- FOR = 15/ AGAINST = 2/ NON-COMMITTAL = 10/ and NO RESPONSE = 69 as follows:- Quebec = 21/ Ontario = 15/ New Brunswick = 6/ Nova Scotia = 6/ Newfoundland = 4/ Alberta = 4/ Saskatchewan - 4/ Prince Edward Island = 2/ NWT, Yukon, Nunavut = 3 PLEASE -- Once the GOLD TICK AWARD list is published, do not write to ask these Senators for their support -- it could work against what Senator Milne is doing for us. Use your WORD or whatever program, type your letter, change the name(s) of each Senator as you finish printing each letter -- address will be the same except for the name(s) -- POSTAGE IS FREE. Cost:- A bit of time, about 100 sheets of paper and 100 envelopes. Hard-copy mail is answered more quickly than e-mail. Again, PLEASE check lists of all present supporters. Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Senscore1.htm

    1. [ALBERTA] Dumb question -- NOT SO DUMB BUT TIMELY.
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Will someone tell me what resources are available for searching families beyond the 1901 census? How does one come farther forward in time without later census records? I am assuming that church and death records are your only help. Something I may have missed? I know at the present time you are having a battle with your legislature there to get the later census records open but it really makes it hard to get beyond the 1901 time period. Pat in Oregon <Wahlhood@aol.com> =================================== Hello Pat:- This not a Dumb Question -- but a very good one! We do need the Post-1901 Canadian Census records opened -- for all of us to peruse. Not all church records are available for viewing -- e.g. Baptist ones are "sealed" with other denominations also making their records only available to their church members. There are search offices, even on census records, but all these cost about $45 for each individual search. I have given the address to many -- but it costs $$$, as do birth and death certificates. Rather than your question being DUMB, it SHOULD get genealogical societies all working together, as Alberta did. Senator Lorna Milne has Bill S-12 and Murray Calder has C-312, but WE have to PROVE to the ones we elected or who were appointed that WE honestly want to have the records released. Some have not answered since March 1999 -- but I presume he/she drew the increased pay since then -- some Senators do not seem to be able to afford e-mail. Check http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census There are Scoreboards for both Members of Parliament and Senate, Petition sites and much, much more. We need SIGNATURES!!! Gather SIGNATURES now!!! My dream is receiving petitions from each Ontario Genealogical Society, of which Lorna and Murray are members. [One so far direct -- several via Alberta] Thanks for the Not-So-Dumb Question, Muriel M. 1. [ALBERTA] OH BOY!/Responses to lookups
    2. Elaine Hildebrand
    3. Hi All listers, For any of you have written looking for lookups in these "dandy" Alberta books.......please bare with me. I took Sat, Sun, and Mon off of the computer as it was our Thanksgiving here.....busy finishing renovating a spare bedroom and turkey and all that stuff. Anyway, I was overwhelmed at the amount of people searching in Alberta or rellies they think may have been here. First off, within the first hour I posted I had 21 requests and I replied to all that night. As of right now I have another 83. I am not complaining......I don't mind or I wouldn't have offered but it is going to take me a couple days to get through them all. I am starting at the top and working down the list, so you will get your info if its in there. This brings me to this........I decided to just send you all this address then I won't have to retype it or be cutting and pasting all the time. For any of you that get info with reference numbers I am enclosing the address in which you need to write to in order to get the certificate. Also to answer the question of where did I get it? A friend of mine won them at a museum showing in Edmonton.I borrowed them from the lady she gave them too(wish she would have given them to me) LOL, The address I am providing and phone number may be able to tell you also if they are available for purchase and the price, as I am not sure. The books were printed in 1998 so are relatively new prints.Apparently the info in the books was compiled from genealogy indexes, public records, provincial archives and info from the Documentary Heritage Society of Alberta. I am only assuming....that even though some of your relatives may not be in the book, may not necessarily mean they weren't here. Always good to check the following Alberta Census site too. http://users.rootsweb.com/~canab/index.html And on a final note.....I will be keeping all info that each of you has sent. I am intending on looking into the "Henderson Directories" that are available at the Main Library. These books go back to the early 1900's and were done for many years to follow. They list such info as where that person may have lived in the Edmonton/Alberta area, their occupation, where they came from and some list where they worked. I cannot tell you when I will be going, but that I do intend on doing so in the near future. If I come across anything that pertains to you, I will email you. For anyone who hasn't sent a request yet and needs one, please don't hesitate to ask...you will just get put in the order in which you are recieved. So here is where you need to contact for certificates or info on the books. Again, the names of the books are as follows: 1) Proof of Age Documents in Alberta, 1863-1969 2)Alberta (Formerly a part of the North West Territories) -An index to Birth, Marriage and Death Registration prior to 1900. *** DHSA (Documentary Heritage Society of Alberta) C/O Provincial Archives of Alberta 12845-102 Ave, NW Edmonton, Alberta,Canada T5N-0M6 Phone: 780-427-0605 Thanks everyone and I will be sending info out as I find it starting after I send this email. Hope everyone had a fabulous weekend!! Take care, Elaine in Alberta, Canada
