Hi Listers, I am seeking information on the Earl family in Alberta in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Robert Lawrence Earl married Edna C. K. (unknown) and his brother Alonza E. Earl married Adella Gilmour in Alberta. Robert and Alonza "moved" west from Kilbride Ontario in the late 1800's. Their father Ameltha Hunt Earl followed them in 1898 (+/-) and lived with Robert and family until his death in 1915 in Calgary. The balance of the family Eliza Jane (Weir) Earl (wife to Ameltha), daughters - Lillia & Eliza and sons - Edwin and William remained in Kilbride. Robert was a teacher while Alonza was a tinsmith in Alberta. Robert lived in Innisfell (? spelling) and then Calgary. Alonza lived in Olds. Does anyone have any leads on this family? Looking for information about the Daniel Bethune family and their farm in Penhold. The family moved to Alberta in 1905 where Daniel purchased 480 acres of land three miles from Penhold. A member of that family was related to the MacKenzie family of PEI, and had a relative in Edmonton. Daniel's wife was "Cassie" (or Catherine MacKenzie) whose brother was A.D. or Alexander D. MacKenzie who also owned land near Penhold. Daniel remarried about 1920 (Cassie had died about 1915) to Elizabeth or "Lizzie" about 1920.

Hi: I am new to this list. My father attended High School in Medicine Hat, from about 1923-1927 or so. Is there any way to get a record of his attendance, activities, etc.? His name was Lynton Norman Stewart, a son of Peter Norman Stewart and Ethel Mildred Black. He was the oldest of four children: Lynton Norman Stewart, born 1909 Valerie Norma Stewart, born 1910 Delbert Charles Stewart, born abt 1912 Lorraine Eldora Stewart, born 1915 His father retired as a CPR Yardmaster at Medicine Hat. His parents seperated in the mid to late 1920's. ANY information concerning this family, or suggestions on places to contact concerning them would be greatly appreciated. None of his children knew he was born in Canada until after his death. His youngest sister casually informed me a year before her death that "we were all born in Winnipeg and just came to the United States in the 30's. None of us were ever here legally". I have since obtained his birth certificate, but would love to flesh out his family if possible. Thank you, Lynton C. Hello list! I am in desperate need of some help! My youngest daughter was in a car accident last Friday and has a spinal injury. As a result she is going to require quite a lot of help while healing. I'm asking if there is anyone out there who would be interested in taking over the administration of the Alberta Mail List, even on a temporary basis. My oldest daughter has volunteered to help with the Alberta GenWeb site so I think I'll take her up on that unless there is someone else interested in assisting me. Would any of the existing Alberta GenWeb county coordinators be interested in helping new county coordinators get set up? I would also ask that you all be patient while we reorganize!! It'll probably take a few weeks to get things working properly again. To all:- There are 26 elected Members of Parliament in the province of Alberta -- and believe it or not, 23 have GOLD ticks of support. The other THREE spoil the look of the page!!!! Glen McRae, Dr. Bob Westbury and others really increased the number of signatures on both Senate and House of Commons petitions -- I know both Murray Calder and Senator Lorna Milne were very appreciative. http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Score1.htm#AB Peter Goldring <Goldring.P@parl.gc.ca> of Edmonton Centre-East has never replied to myself or to others since April 1999 when he received a letter requesting support from Global Genealogy. I feel certain many Albertans will swell the number of emails or letters he receives. Frankly, Mr. Goldring represents the people of Edmonton and there are many who are seeking release of the Post-1901 census. The Hon. David Kilgour <Kilgour.D@parl.gc.ca> also represents Edmonton Southeast -- he replied to a writer, the letter was posted to us and thus he has his very sharp piece of UNDECIDED Fence. Also from Edmonton, is The Hon. Ann McLellan -- who is perched on the picket fence because Dr. Pamela White answered for her. Send messages to <McLellan.A@parl.gc.ca> Gordon Watts has attempted to receive an answer -- used e-mail, fax, letter and registered mail -- no luck!! Check the messages under their names -- not very good for Edmonton! By the way, the three concerned are also receiving this message -- today, one from Manitoba answered immediately -- also from the 1999 vintage -- hope for the above! Muriel M. Hello.... I am writing to this list for two reasons. One, is that I think other members of this list might be interested in the Smoky Lake history website that I have been creating. This website has a great variety of information about the people along this particular area of the North Saskatchewan River. The address is http://www.smokylake.com/history/ and more information is always being added. Second, I am trying to find information on Rev. Percy Sutton and his wife Pheobe. Rev. Sutton was in Smoky Lake between 1911 - 1921 and then in Wabaman area in 1925 - 1937. I have found one mention that suggests he may have been in Walsch sometime around 1911 but have not been able to varify that. If anyone has information on the Suttons, please email me at christy@smokylake.com Thank you. - Christy
I was looking for any information on Thomas and Embray METCALFE of the Alliance area. And also The GOODENOUGH family of Coronation Alberta are. Greetings All. I have sent the following News Release to most of the major daily newspapers and television stations across Canada. I have not sent it to any of the weekly or community papers. Feel free to forward it to your local papers and other media. Please remove this message before doing so. When forwarding please include the portion below the dotted line. Thank you for your interest and support. Gordon A. Watts 604-942-6889 Monday 29 October 2001 Heritage Minister supports access to Historic Census Vancouver - Sheila Copps, speaking Friday on Bill Good's TalkBack radio show (CKNW - Vancouver) stated that she was "very much in favour" of allowing public access to Historic Census Records. She was responding to a question by caller Gordon A. Watts, Co-Chair of the Canada Census Committee. In making this statement she joins National Archivist Ian Wilson, Information Commissioner John Reid, and 133 Members of Parliament that have to date expressed support for this access. Ms. Copps also stated she has requested to appear before the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology who are currently reviewing Private Member Bill S-12, submitted by Senator Lorna Milne. Bill S-12 would permit the public access to Historic Census Records, 92 years following collection, sought by genealogists and historians. It includes a provision for individuals, in the year before the scheduled release, to object to the inclusion of their information in the records made available to researchers. Currently, 235 years of Census records -- all that survive -- from the first Census of New France conducted by Intendent Jean Talon in 1666 up to and including the National Census of Canada for 1901, are held in the National Archives. These records are available to any body or person for purposes of research. Census records are considered to be the single most important source of information for those seeking information regarding their ancestry. They are the only source that provides information regarding families, rather than individuals. In excess of 40,000 signatures have been sent on petitions, emails and letters to MPs, Senators, and other government officials, seeking to regain access to Post 1901 records. This access is currently prevented by the refusal of Statistics Canada to turn control of those records over to the National Archivist. Without a change in the position of Statistics Canada there will never again be another Census of Canada made available to the public. -30- --------------------------------------- The Canada Census Committee is an adhoc committee made up of concerned genealogists and historians from across Canada. Co-Chair Gordon A. Watts retired from B C Telephone in 1996 and has been an amateur genealogist since 1990. He has spent the past four years extensively researching the issue of public access to Post 1901 Census records and is a leader of a campaign to regain that access. He participated in roundtable discussions relating to the Access to Information Act Review in Ottawa on 26 March 2001, and appeared before the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology in support of Bill S-12 on 19 September 2001. He can be reached by: e-mail gordon_watts@telus.net Tel. 604-942-6889 Fax. 604-942-6843 or by Canada Post at: 1455 Delia Drive, Port Coquitlam, BC, V3C 2V9 Further information can be seen at the Post 1901 Census Project Website at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census
Greetings All I copy below for your information a Press Release from Senator Lorna Milne regarding access to Post 1901 Census. The information contained therein, depending on the reaction of Statistics Canada, could forstall our preparations to proceed to the Federal Courts for a Writ of Mandamus for release of the records. Time will tell. Happy Haunting. <]:-) Gordon A. Lorna Milne demanded that Statistics Canada stop breaking the law and allow the release of post 1901 census records to the National Archives of Canada. "It is now clear that Statistics Canada has a legal duty to release post 1901 census records, and they have repeatedly refused to do so", Senator Milne asserted. "They can no longer claim any legitimate reason to avoid this duty. This vital record of Canada's history and people must be released into the keeping of the National Archivist of Canada immediately". Senator Milne was reacting to the release of 10 legal opinions that Statistics Canada has received over the last 20 years on the issue of the release of post 1901 census information. The documents were obtained by the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. The committee is currently studying Bill S-12, Senator Milne's Private Senator's Bill that would allow for the release of census information 92 years after the date of the census. "The latest legal opinion unequivocally states that the better legal view is that post 1901 census records should be released." she noted. "Furthermore, the current Chief Statistician, Dr. Ivan Fellegi, was told as long ago as 1981 that, in order to comply with both the spirit and the letter of privacy and access to information legislation, Statistics Canada would have to release post 1901 census information". Senator Milne has received petitions from nearly 20,000 Canadians calling for the release of post 1901 census information. The 1906 Western Census records were due to be released in 1998 in accordance with the National Archives of Canada Act and the Privacy Act, but Statistics Canada has refused to act on this obligation. - 30 - For more information, please call Jeff Paul at 613-947-9744
How do I access the Wilson-Mills scrapbook that I read about on the Alberta Genealogical Society website? I am looking for the Fisher (James, Robert William) families and the Tape (John Benson and Jane) families in the Strathcona area. Robert William Fisher married Irene (Renee) Lillian Tape in the late 19teens. They had five sons: David HARRY; Robert GORDON; Albert STANley; Ken and William Robert BOB. They also had a daughter Jean Elizabeth. Robert William Fisher died in about 1923 or 24 and a few years later his widow remarried John Henry Green (who had five children from his first marriage). Together they had a son George Lawrence Green, known as "Joe". They moved to the Peace River area. Renee died during World War II in an Edmonton Hospital. Henry Green disappeared from the view of the Fisher family, resurfacing in the mid 1980's to say goodbye before his death (I believe in Kelowna). The Tapes moved to the Strathcona area (also with their son William Henry "Harry" on April 5, 1910. John died a few years later. Jane (Lee) Tape lived with her daughter's family for awhile. Harry lived in Manitoba where he met his first wife and later in Longview, Alberta with his second wife and family, Ada Viola Tweed. Any information (stories, ancedotes) very gratefully received. Greetings All It is just before 12:00 noon and I have just hung up the telephone from speaking with Heritage Minister Sheila Copps on Bill Good's talk show on CKNW in Vancouver. I was one of only three callers that managed to get on before the end of the program. I asked Ms. Copps why she had not come on board with genealogists and historians seeking to regain public access to Historic Census Records. Her response was that she was very much in favour of public access to Post 1901 Census Records and that she has asked to appear before the Senate Committee reviewing Senator Milne's Bill S-12. She appeared to be aware of the Post 1901 Census Project website as she mentioned that she was shown there as not having given a definite response as to her position re: access. Based on this conversation I will finally be awarding her a gold tick of support on the MPs Scoreboard. I am very pleased to be able to do this. On a side issue, Ms. Copps' first caller was Alliance MP Ted White of North Vancouver. He obviously did not like her response to his question relating to legislation currently being discussed in the House of Commons because he hung up on her. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
