    1. [ALBERTA] WOOD, Harry Gordon; Military??
    2. Bonnie Barnes
    3. Hi Listers....... I wrote before.....trying to find a needle in a haystack. Can we try again please!! My missing cousin is Harry Gordon WOOD. He was born in Washington State abt Nov 1919 to Thomas F. WOOD (his Canadian father) and Mary (Marie) Olivia KENSETH (Kjenseth) his mother who was born in Norway. I found them on the 1920 Washington State Census, but sometime after that they moved to Canada where they remained for the rest of their lives. The good news is that I have a snapshot of Harry that says Cousin Harry Wood on the back and the date 1941. He is wearing a uniform that isn't like any I'm familiar with. (I grew up in Seattle so what do I know?) This uniform looks a light color, maybe tan, with a shirt type jacket and wide belt. The shirt is 'out' at the bottom, over the top of his trousers. He is standing on the stairs in front of a building that has a sign on it. The building looks like a temporary type structure....not built to last for decades and the sign appears to say No. 3 HUT, 'A' WING. Mind you I am using a magnifying glass to read this, but underneath it looks as if it says 'B' ....and then it gets harder to read. It could be CDN or COY or ??? It doesn't really look like a C....it looks more like an ( or 'opening parenthesis mark' and then DN or DV. There appears to be four smaller letters after that, but I can't distinguish them for sure. Does anyone think they know what I'm trying to describe? Does the 'A' WING mean this is Air Force? Does anyone have any idea or suggestion as to what to do now? I've got to find out more about him to try to fit them into the family better. Harry's mother was my Norwegian aunt. She was the only one in this family to leave the Seattle area and the only thing we absolutely know is that they went to Canada to live. I know Canada's big and I'm fighting against all odds, but this photo has to help. Does anyone have military information available? I'm pretty sure this is World War II, as the 1941 indicates, but for all I know he could have been stationed anywhere. I just want to find his home so I can get this family together again. Please contact me if you can help. Anything at all is better than nothing. Many thanks, Bonnie Menzer Barnes Perth, Western Australia

    3. Greetings All. I copy below for your possible interest the minutes of the meeting of the Sub-Committee of the House Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs that deemed Bill C-312 non-votable. Of note regarding these minutes are the following: -- MP Michel Guimond was not present at the proceedings. In his place was MP Pierre Brien - Brien.P@parl.gc.ca . Neither of these gentlemen has responded to our questions relating to Census since March 1999. -- The meeting lasted 110 minutes in total during which 95 minutes were spent in normal procedural matters and taking testimony from nine Members of Parliament regarding thirteen Bills and Motions from the House of Commons, and one Bill referred from the Senate. Fifteen minutes were spent in determining the fate of those thirteen Bills and Motions. Not one of the thirteen considered was deemed votable. -- The government website from which these minutes are linked currently does not show the evidence given at this meeting. There is, however, a location for a link to the evidence given and it is expected that it will will be linked shortly. While evidence for other meetings is shown, deliberations on the fate of the Bills considered is done 'In Camera' and so the reasons for their decisions are unlikely to be known. -- There is some interesting reading at the start of evidence given at the meeting of 3 October 2001 which is linked from the website of the Sub-Committee. The URL for this website is http://www.parl.gc.ca/InfoCom/CommitteeMinute.asp?Language=E&Parliament= 8&Joint=0&CommitteeID=183 While this shows up as two links it is, in fact, one. Be sure that you enter the full length of it. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [ALBERTA] Post 1901 Census - New Petition Totals for House of Commons
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. This afternoon I mailed another batch of Census Petitions for the House of Commons to MP Murray Calder. There were a total of 1502 signatures in this batch. To date we have sent a total of 13,237 signatures. The breakdown of the petitions is as follows: Province Previous Current Total =============================== BC 1944 524 2468 AB 5311 69 5380 SK 676 33 709 MB 261 22 283 ON 1769 528 2297 PQ 548 133 681 NB 392 109 501 NS 520 84 604 PE 99 0 99 NF 208 0 208 YT 7 0 7 NT 0 0 0 NUN 0 0 0 =============================== Totals 11735 1502 13237 I am pleased that numbers of signatures from Ontario and Quebec are starting to move up. A number of petitions have been received from different branches of the OGS and from different genealogy and historical associations in Quebec. However, as can be seen from the chart, signatures from some other areas are sadly lacking. It is important to continue sending letters and email to our elected officials seeking support for public access to Historic Census records. It is equally important, if not more so, to gather signatures on the petitions. We have no means of determining numbers of letters and email written, but when petitions are sent to us for forwarding to MP Murray Calder and Senator Milne, we are able to keep a running total of signatures. This is important for demonstrating the support for our efforts to regain access to the records. The Canada Census Committee does not have a monopoly on petitions, and we are aware of some of our petitions that have been sent directly to MPs and Senators. We would request of anyone doing so to please let us know how many signatures were sent, and to whom they were sent. We would prefer to have our petitions funneled through us. If you send any petitions to other MPs or Senators, obtain a committment from them in advance that they will, in fact, present them to their respective Houses. There is no rule that states that a member must present petitions that they receive. We do have that committment from MP Murray Calder and Senator Lorna Milne. I check Hansard regularly for debates of the House of Commons and the Senate. In the Senate I have seen where one petition was presented by a Senator other than Lorna Milne, and one petition presented by Senator Milne that was different than ours, and was sent directly to her. In this instance it was 305 signatures of Canadian Home Children also seeking access to census records. In the House of Commons I have never seen a petition presented by any MP other than Murray Calder, even though I am aware of a few that have been sent to other MPs. We have no idea what happened to those petitions. Keep collecting signatures on petitions, and keep writing your letters and email. We need them both. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [ALBERTA] Post 1901 Census - Bill C-312 NON-votable
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. We have today been advised from the office of MP Murray Calder that his Bill C-312 has been deemed to be non-votable. As a result it will receive only one hour of debate in the House of Commons and will then be be dropped from the Order paper. This is hardly worthy of a Bill regarding an issue which has received in excess of 40,000 signatures seeking support for public access to Post 1901 Census Records. This news has been a great disappointment. We had hoped that C-312 would be considered votable and would at least receive the three hours debate alloted to votable Private Member Bills. Members of the sub-committee of the House Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs that made this decision were as follows: Carolyn Parrish Parrish.C@parl.gc.ca Michel Guimond Guimond.M@parl.gc.ca Jay Hill Hill.J@parl.gc.ca Bill Blaikie Blaikie.B@parl.gc.ca Garry Breitkreuz Breitkreuz.G@parl.gc.ca Marcel Proulx Proulx.M@parl.gc.ca Email addresses have been provided for those who might be inclined to send an email to the members of this sub-committee to express their disappointment with their decision. I for one will be sending such a message. I also received word today that the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology will be meeting 6 December 2001 for clause-by-clause consideration of Bill S-12 - An Act to amend the Statistics Act and the National Archives of Canada Act (census records). Following the clause-by-clause consideration, S-12 will be returned to the Senate for Report stage. Gordon A. 1. [ALBERTA] WOOD, Tom, Mary (Marie) and Harry
    2. Bonnie Barnes
    3. Hi Listers :-) I am trying to locate information on Thomas F. WOOD born in Canada about 1885. I am not positive he was from Alberta, but I wrote to an older cousin (who's about 75 years old) and he says he thinks his mother mentioned Alberta when speaking about them. Thomas married Mary (Marie) Olivia KENSETH (Kjenseth) probably in Snohomish County, Washington in about 1918. She was born in Biri, Norway in June 1896. They moved back to Canada sometime after the birth of their first child. To my knowledge they had only one child...a son named Harry Gordon WOOD who would have been born abt Nov 1919. I have a photo of him in a military uniform so I believe he may have served in WW II. I don't know if he survived the war or not, but all of the other KENSETH family members remained in the Seattle area and photos were taken when Mary visited .... up until 1950. I don't know when people lost track of the Wood's family, but all of Mary's siblings are now deceased as are most of their children.....and I am desparate to find out what happened to Mary and her family. If anyone has any information or can point me in any direction to find my missing WOOD family I would greatly appreciate it. Many thanks, Bonnie Menzer Barnes Perth, Western Australia

    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- There are 26 elected Members of Parliament in the province of Alberta -- and believe it or not, 23 have GOLD ticks of support. The other THREE spoil the look of the page!!!! Glen McRae, Dr. Bob Westbury and others really increased the number of signatures on both Senate and House of Commons petitions -- I know both Murray Calder and Senator Lorna Milne were very appreciative. http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Score1.htm#AB Peter Goldring <Goldring.P@parl.gc.ca> of Edmonton Centre-East has never replied to myself or to others since April 1999 when he received a letter requesting support from Global Genealogy. I feel certain many Albertans will swell the number of emails or letters he receives. Frankly, Mr. Goldring represents the people of Edmonton and there are many there who are seeking release of the Post-1901 census. The Hon. David Kilgour <Kilgour.D@parl.gc.ca> also represents Edmonton Southeast -- he replied to a writer, the letter was posted to us and thus he has his very sharp piece of UNDECIDED Fence. Also from Edmonton, is The Hon. Ann McLellan -- who is perched on the picket fence because Dr. Pamela White answered for her. Send messages to <McLellan.A@parl.gc.ca> Check the messages under their names -- not very good for Edmonton! By the way, the three concerned are also receiving this message -- Muriel M. 1. [ALBERTA] Thanks for the Petitions that are Filling my Mail-Box!!!
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- PETITIONS are starting to come again -- some from Canada, some from parts of United States. We cannot over-emphasize the need for these signatures on petitions, whether for the Senate or the House of Commons. Signatures are PROOF we want the Post-1901 census records released. http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Petition.htm Why do we keep saying "Post-1901"? Three provinces of Canada: Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba have never had a Canadian census -- their special 1906 census should have been released in 1998 -- not allowed by StatsCan. There are earlier records, many on Alberta sites, but under different names, e.g. North-West Territories, Assiniboine - even Hudson's Bay. The main cross-Canada census would be the 1911 one -- and should the 1921 and 1931 also be released, it would not make me unhappy. Senator Milne tells me I want to see my name on a census record, but this would bring it in line with United States 1930 one. Keep the petitions coming, please -- Gordon and I exchange petitions, and should there be a real need for House of Commons ones which have been sent to me, do not worry! I will tabulate, send them via Senator Milne to Murray Calder and tell Gordon later (in print). Above all, please change my e-mail address now - as of Nov. 22 <davidson3542@rogers.com> [We will receive mail until Nov. 30] Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee
