    1. Re: [ALBERTA] WOOD; Military photo online
    2. Bonnie Barnes
    3. To Shannon and others who tried to help me with my query on Tom, Mary and Harry Wood. The picture is still in question as almost everyone thought it was a Canadian Air Force summer uniform and the picture appeared to have been taken at Camp Borden in Barrie, Ontario. During the war years, that camp was one of the most important training bases for Canada and many Commonwealth countries although it appeared to be an Army camp according to sources I've been in contact with. I managed to have SKS look up some obituaries in the Seattle area and sure enough Marie (Mary) Wood was known to be living in Brownsville, Ontario in 1961 and in Kettleby, Ontario in 1971. To the best of my knowledge there was both a Brownsville and a Kettleby in York County, Ontario although Brownsville no longer exists. I thought I might start looking there though as it seems logical that they might stay in the same area. I'm still open to suggestions on this one. I dropped out of sight for awhile due to virus trouble, but if anyone wants another look at the photo...it's at...... http://www.geocities.com/courtie_mae/bonnie/hgwood.jpg I'm moving on to the Ontario list now to see if I can sort this out, but please feel free to contact me if you want to have some input. Thanks for everything. Bonnie Menzer Barnes Perth, Western Australia > Bonnie, > Did you get an identification for your photo? What is the uniform - which > service? I'm curious! > > Shannon >

    1. [ALBERTA] Post 1901 Census - First Town Hall meeting to be in Ottawa!
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. I have today been advised that the Ottawa Citizen newspaper today (Thursday) had an ad on page A7 advertising the first of Statistics Canada's Town Hall meetings -- the first of Industry Minister Brian Tobin's announced "further broad based consultations with all Canadians" regarding public access to Historic Census Records. What is interesting about this ad is the heading of it, which was reported to me as "Express your views and opinions on releasing the individual 1906 and 1911 census questionairres." While only the 1906 and 1911 Census' are mentioned, it is expected that these hearings will have a bearing on access of later Census as well. Environics Research Group has been contracted to conduct Town Hall Meetings in 14 major centers in each of the Provinces and Territories, as well as two focus group surveys in each of these centers. This is the same company that conducted the focus groups and national surveys by Statistics Canada for the Expert Panel on Access to Historical Census Records. The first meetings are to be held in Ottawa. Date: Friday 14 December 2001 One from 2:00 - 4:00 PM and another from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Location: Sir Guy Carleton Room, Mariott Residence Inn 161 Laurier Ave. West, Ottawa Presentations are in English or French on a first come, first served basis. To confirm attendance, which they request, once can call (613) 230-5089 or email censusconsultations@environics.ca There is some concern, because attendence is requested to be confirmed in advance, that these meetings will not be as open as one might hope. We sincerely hope that no one who wishes to attend will be prevented from doing so. Information regarding these meetings is expected to be on websites for both Statistics Canada and Environics Research, however, at the time of this writing, the Environics sites are 'under construction' and there is nothing on the Statistics Canada website as yet. Perhaps there will be tomorrow. Environcs Research's home page is located at http://erg.environics.net/ On the upper left side, links for English and French are shown under a heading of "Census Consultations" The link given for Statistic Canada was http://www.statcan.ca/english/census96/histcrd.htm which is the same page on Statistics Canada's website on which the link to information on the Expert Panel is located. It is vitally important that those who wish to see public access to Historic Census Records make an effort to attend these meetings, and express their opinions regarding access. If we do not do so we stand a chance of losing these records forever. It is our feeling that the focus groups and surveys conducted for the Expert Panel were biased towards obtaining a negative response to access. We are concerned that information provided and questions asked during these town hall meetings and focus groups will be similarly biased. I have attempted to obtain information from Dr. Ivan Fellegi, Chief Statistician of Canada, regarding what information would be provided to participants, and what questions would be asked of them. So far he has declined to respond. I would appreciate it if some-one attending these meetings would let me know what transpired and how they felt the proceedings had gone. Let us know as accurately as possible what information was given and what questions asked. I am particularly interested in knowing if the unsubstantiated "promise" of Statistics Canada is introduced, and what degree of emphasis is placed on it. I would like to think that a transcript of the proceedings will be kept and made available to the public, but I think the odds are against this happening. Watch your local newspapers for notices of meetings and focus groups to be held in your area. Meetings in other areas are expected to be held in December and January. Final reports from Environics are to be given to Statistics Canada by 15 February 2002. I cannot stress enough the importance of attending these meetings to let those conducting them know that we need, and want access to the Post 1901 Census records on the same basis as those up to and including 1901 have been, and still are. Please forward this message to all Ontario mail lists. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en français http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm Permission to forward without notice is granted.

    3. To all:- Many of us know of several events taking place in the year 2003:- "Gathering of the Descendants" from 1753 -- mine arrived on the Murdoch. Bryan Keddy has a special radio program, "Sail On Nova Scotia" with Down Home music and many favorites. 2003 is supposed to be the year our 1911 Canadian census records are released to the National Archives for us to peruse -- have you checked http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census We need Senate and also House of Commons Petitions NOW!!! 2003 will possibly be the year viewers will have a peek at Winston Churchill's famed wartime bunker -- closed since 1945. 2003 could see St. John's Anglican Church rebuilt again -- all records were saved and are safe. [The congregation gave its approval!] To help many become acquainted with the Down Home music -- Bryan Keddy now has added "Nova Scotia Kitchen Party" -- have you ever been to a Ceilidh???? Basically, it means good music and all homegrown! The Rankins were on Nov. 24th -- others will be announced. http://www.novascotiakitchenparty.com To add to this Down Home feeling, how about my homepage -- liked by many for census, references, links, etc. -- Enjoy it at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/ Do not forget to visit the lighthouses, Scotty, the Canada/United States tribute and :Genetically Inherited Diseases -- prepared for Expert Panel. I don't know much about it but have called the person to see if they sent me anything which they hadn't and they advised me it is in fact a virus. Please don't open anything with the subject "hi" and a personal message. The message I received had a spelling error in it which was one of my first clues. Please be careful as we don't need another virus going through our lists. Good Luck Perrie Fauth pcents@cadvision.com Please do not open anything with the subject "hi" There is a virus attached that will automatically send it out to everyone in your address book. 1. [ALBERTA] Searching for William Thomas OKE - possibly residing Edmonton 1907-1935 ??
    2. Jim Oke
    3. A few weeks ago, I posted a note about a William Thomas OKE, who was employed as a railway conductor (Grand Trunk Pacific, later CNR) on the "Coal branch" line SW of Edson from possibly 1908 - 1935. Although Edson was a major railway divisional point, there seems to be no trace of him in the Edson area. I am wondering if perhaps he lived in Edmonton and worked out of that city on the Edmonton-Jasper run through Edson. He had previously lived in downtown Toronto for twenty years, so perhaps he would have preferred to live in a larger city if his work circumstances permitted. To recap, Wm. T. OKE was born in/near Bowmanville, Ontario circa 1863, s/o Thomas M. OKE and Mary Jane WITHERIDGE. By 1886 the family had moved to Toronto and he became employed by the Grand Trunk Railway, first as a brakeman and later advancing to Conductor. In 1907 he seems to have moved west to take up employment with the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, leaving his wife Olive Mary (SPACEY) and probably a daughter, Olive Elizabeth OKE, behind. Mrs. Olive OKE disappears from the Toronto directories in 1908, my assumption being she went west to join her husband. His widowed mother also seems to have disappeared from Toronto at the same time and may have gone west to reside with her son. In 1935, a William Thomas OKE reappeared in Toronto as a salesman for the "Jasper Hard Coal Company" suggesting he had left the railway and was living in the east again. He continued in this line of work, later for the "Alberta Coal Co." until 1950 when he disappears from the directories again. (He would have been 87 years old - so no surprise if he simply passed away then !) The usual questions: Is there any trace of a William Thomas OKE & family in the Edmonton city directories of that era ? Is there a death or burial record, etc. in Alberta for his mother, Mary Jane WITHERIDGE) OKE, b. abt 1842 ? Likewise for his wife, Olive Mary (SPACEY), b. abt 1865 ? Could his daughter, Olive Elizabeth OKE, b. abt 1895, have married in Alberta say about 1920 onwards ? One possible name is a (Mrs.) Helen LESLIE whom William T. OKE resided with in Toronto 1935-1950 who might logically be his daughter. Any help or suggestions for further research much appreciated. Jim Oke Winnipeg, Man. (Researching OKE most anywhere, esp. Canada, Devon and Cornwall.)

    1. [ALBERTA] Post 1901 Census - Bills S-12 and C-312
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. I have recently been advised that the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology have postponed clause by clause deliberation on Senator Lorna Milne's Bill S-12 An Act to Amend the Access to Information and Statistics Act (census records). This deliberation, originally scheduled for 6 December 2001, will now be held 12 December 2001. Following this, Bill S-12 will be returned to the Senate for Report Stage and further discussion. We hope that the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology will recommend acceptance of S-12 without any major changes. Although MP Murray Calder's Bill C-312 has been deemed non-votable, along with every other Private Member Bill considered at the same time, it will receive up to one hour debate in the House of Commons before being dropped from the Order Paper. It is expected that this debate will take place on 11 December and will be broadcast on CPAC. There is a possibility, because a budget is expected to be brought down on that day, that debate on C-312 will be delayed. I will post a message regarding any delay as soon as I am informed regarding it. In this time of activity regarding S-12 and C-312, it is important to keep up our efforts to bring these to the attention of our MPs, Senators and Ministers. Keep sending your letters and email, and signing petitions. Both are important. Send your representatives a Christmas wish and ask for their support at the same time. While letters and email keep individual MPs and Senators keep them aware of our personal feelings, we have no way of tracking numbers sent. Numbers of signatures on petitions are a visible indication of support for our efforts that can be tracked and totalled. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
