Hi Everyone Is there anyone out there that tell me exactly where my grand-parents and family homesteaded in Nightingale, Edmonton from 1921 - 1934. I believe they lived on a farm one and one-half miles west of Nightingale - where can I view this on a map? The family names are HYNAM (Owned the blacksmiths shop), BISACRE (Frank drove the school bus), OSMOND (Walter killed by lightening in cornfield). There neighbours were KIMMETT, HARRIMAN, STOUDLEY, DOUGAN. Still hoping to purchase the book 'English Colony - Nightingale and District' published by the WI, the info gathered by Harvey Dougan on behalf of his mother in the 70's. I have written to him at an address in Strathmore but my letter has been returned to me today, unfortunately I can not read the official stamp as to why it was returned. Please keep an eye out for the book in possibly second-hand book shops. My niece is visiting Edmonton next year and would dearly love to see where her great-grandparents homesteaded. Regards Kathrine Bristol, England,UK
I looked at www.canada411.com, there is a Harvey Dougan in Strathmore, no address though, just the phone number. There are quite a few Dougans in Alberta. Anything I can do to help? Hi, I've just joined this list and am trying to establish a link to my IRVINE family. Joseph Alexander Walker IRVINE was married to Susan Douglas MILLDOWN on 27 Dec 1872 in Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland. This couple had 12 known children. According to some information I have found on the LDS site, Joseph died on 1 April 1911 in Mountain Home, Albr, his wife Susan in Taber, Albr on 31 January 1908, Susan is apparently buried in the Taber Cemetery. Could some-one local to the Taber area please advise me is there a web-site for the Taber Cemetery and is it searchable ? Do the names of Joseph IRVINE/Susan MILLDOWN ring any bells with any-one ? Hoping for some assistance, and/or a connection. Marion Ellis Queensland, Australia

With the lively exchange of recommendations for genealogy software I am surprised that no one has put forward The Master Genealogist" (TMG). This package handles a number of people limited only by the size of your hard disk, does not observably slow down as the number of persons increases, and has excellent import tools from other packages, as well as GEDCOM import/export. The user can include text, photos and images either in the data base or referenced files. Various reports and exports to wordprocessors or spread sheets, and a graphing capability combine to make a very flexible, powerful package. Further information and a demo may be seen at www.whollygenes.com. There is also a very active list for users for all sorts of assistance as to 'correct' entry of data, sources etc. Technical help is an email or phone call away also. We have no financial connection to this product just very satisfied users. J & M Edler West Pennant Hills AUSTRALIA 2125

Greetings All It now appears very unlikely that MP Murray Calders Bill C-312 - An Act to amend the Statistics Act and the National Archives of Canada Act (census records) - will be debated as expected this month. It looks like the House will debate the budget on the 11th and 12th and then break for Christmas, returning January 28th. It is possible that the budget debate will continue for a day or two on the 28th and 29th, but Murray's bill will be the first to come forward once private members' business resumes. On my previous message giving locations and dates for the Town Hall meetings relating to Census, there was no location shown for Manitoba. I have now received that information and include it here for your information. Brother's Keeper v6 has no limitation for sources, locations or people. It is available for shareware download at www.bkwin.com I started using Brother's Keeper v5.2 after seeing that many family associations were using it. I'm still using v5.2 and haven't upgraded to v6 yet. I have been using Brother's Keeper for years and have over 21,000 in the program. Lots of room for notes, photos etc. Best part is you can download it on line for a trial (this is the full program) and if you like it you can register it. Just type in Brother's Keeper in your browser. Hello Martha, I can't specifically answer your questions but do suggest that you visit: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ and review its `features' and also it's comparison page where in Legacy folks compare their software to FTM, PAF, Genealogy and Family Tree Origins. [Comparison may be biased, I don't know.] Personally, I like Legacy [no commercial interest] except for one limitation: like many of the programs I've examined, it doesn't have the ability to handle unlimited sources which is why I've stuck with PAF -[I have 1,400 names only]. I can have up to 15 to 25 sources per individual since I try to write a family history and I report ALL my sources. I'll soon be trying Generations courtesy of a relative who bought it only to change platforms to XT and now he finds he cannot use it. This seems a good caution re any selection. You might also try entering `Genealogy Software Comparisons' into Goggle and check some of the results. For what it's worth....... Hi Listers; I used PAF until my records reached over 5,000, now I am using FTM and have over 8,000 records entered. Does anyone know the capabilities of Genealogy Detective? Are it's features any better than FTM? Thanks, Martha

Greetings All. I have received a list of times and dates of most of the Town Hall Meetings for expressing opinions regarding public access to Post 1901 Census records. (Their ad mentions only the 1906 and 1911 Census') There appears to be fewer meetings than expected, and if I learn of others I will post that information as soon as I get it. I copy the list of meetings below. It appears that anyone wishing to speak on the subject will be given a 15 minute time slot in which to do so. As sessions are slated to last two hours, this means that a maximum of 8 speakers will have the opportunity to speak in each session -- 16 speakers maximum in each location. Practically speaking, with administration overhead time required for each session the numbers of speakers may be reduced if they stick strictly to the two hour time period for each session. Presenters, in either English or French, will be chosen on a first come, first serve basis. Regardless of what location you will attend, if you wish to speak to the issue, contact Environics NOW -- TODAY to inform them of your desire to speak. If you wait you will be unlikely to obtain a spot to speak. Contact them by telephone at 613-230-5089 or by email at censusconsultations@environics.ca I have already sent my request to be a speaker at the Vancouver meeting. I am advised that for those not wishing to speak, but who wish to attend the meetings, there will be room for spectators. We hope that there will be a good attendance at all of these meeting to show that we are interested in what happens at them. I would appreciate being informed by those who are accepted as speakers as to where and when they will be speaking. So that the greatest possible number of people can be made aware of these meetings, please circulate this message to others, and forward it to other mail lists. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
