Hi fellow listers, it's this time of the year again. People are getting busy with shopping and Christmas things, less time is spent looking at e-mails. AIN'T THIS THE TRUTH I started out calmly, tracing my tree, To see if I could find the makings of me. And all that I had was Great-grandfather's name, Not knowing his wife or from where he came. I checked him in Europe and then to the States, And came up with pages and pages of dates. When all put together, it made me forlorn, I think I proved Great-grandpa had never been born. One day I was sure the truth I had found, My brain was just going around and around. I looked up the record of that Son-of-a-Gun, Then I found the old man was not the right one.. Then when my hopes were fast growing dim, I came across records that must have been him. The facts I collected made me quite sad, Dear old Great grandpa was never a Dad. I think that someone's been pulling my leg, I am not at all sure I wasn't hatched from an egg. After hundreds of dollars I've spent on my tree, I can't help but wonder, "Am I really me!".. I am a new member to this list. I am looking to make contact with family of my uncle JAMES EDWARD McDONALD, born London, England, 1880 (and his wife BESSIE nee DAVIES ), who emigrated from Birkenhead, Cheshire, England before the start of WW1 and settled in HUXLEY, Alberta. If anyone could give me a local contact in the HUXLEY area (Family History Society, Register Office, Library, etc) that would help my search, I would be most grateful. With thanks Robin Macdonald (Devon, UK)

Greetings All. At the request of Senator Lorna Milne I am forwarding her message as follows =============================== To all the members of the Canada Census Campaign, and everyone else who has put so very much effort into the e-mail, letter and petition campaign. My bill is now at third reading stage in the Senate. I have postponed my third reading speech until the Senate returns at the beginning of February, 2002, so that it will be fresh in the Senators' minds during the debate. I firmly believe that out campaign is going very well, thanks to all the help you have given it --- such tremendous input from so many highly intelligent and highly qualified people. The latest Stats Canada ploy, the Town Hall meetings and Forum discussions, have started very well from our point of view. You already know that Stats Canada has had to resort to using Gordon's analysis of the "compromise solution" lifted straight off his webb site. Also their expert witness, who I am sure they expected to support the privacy aspect at the Ottawa meeting, came down strongly on the side of release of the historic census! I wish you all a very happy Christmas with your families and your friends. Ross and I will be in Calgary with our grandchildren, on whose behalf I am fighting this battle. We will touch base again in the New Year. Many thanks, Senator Lorna Milne

Greetings All. For some time we have been hearing about a "compromise solution" to the Census issue that Statistics Canada and former Privacy Commissioner Bruce Phillips felt would meet the needs of genealogists and historians seeking access to Post 1901 Census records. Current Privacy Commissioner George Radwanski has stated that the 'compromise' is something that he can accept. It has been mentioned in Hansard for the Senate, recent responses from MPs and certain Senators mention it, Neil Sheridan and George Radwanski supported it in Senate Committee hearings in September, and now it has been used in the Ottawa Town Hall meeting. It might be stretching things at this point to suggest that the 'compromise' is being 'pushed' at the Town Hall meetings but copies of it were made available to everyone attending the meetings, and every presenter was asked if they could support it. It is my understanding that without exception, every presenter rejected it out of hand as being too restrictive and unworkable. Following the Senate Committee hearings I attended in September I was able to obtain a copy of the "compromise" and have done a thorough examination of it. I agree with the assessment of the presenters of the Ottawa Town Hall meetings. The so-called 'compromise', in my opinion, is no 'compromise' at all, and in fact is so restrictive as to be little better than no access at all. I have done a critique of this document, and included it in my latest column for the Global Gazette. Because of the length of it I will not post it in this message. The critique may be accessed at the following URL. http://globalgazette.net/gazce/gazce74.htm Like Environics and Statistics Canada, I am very interested in knowing how you feel about the so-called 'compromise solution'. After reading it I would ask that you send me a message stating your feelings about the 'compromise' suggested. Please limit your comments to what you feel about the 'compromise' suggested rather than my critique of the various sections. Place in the subject line of the message only 'Compromise Solution' without the quotation marks. I have set up filters in my email program to funnel these messages into a specific folder. My intention is to send these comments to Environics and/or Statistics Canada. My next column for the Global Gazette, which I am writing at this time, will include a critique of Dr. Ivan Fellegi's presentation to the Senate Committee. It should be online before the end of the week. I look forward to your comments. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Hello listers. All i want for xmas is info on my Marie Landry born ca 1800. Now do not remember if i wrote this in before. So if i did im Not Sorry!! My Duncan McDougall died Oct/Nov 1818 around Lake Superior. Now also found a Landry family lived around Lake Superior. Now being Duncan lived amongst the tribal people for years it seems to me he died amongst them as well. Supposedly Marie Landry plus her daughter Catherine was born in BC. Yet i do not believe there were boundary lines in 1800 or 1818. So how can one say born in BC. Unless some one later on in life said it. But also have another problem with my Catherine. It is stated born 1818. Yet having children yet in ca 1875!! Now i know stranger things have happened but isnt this rather old to be bearing children??? Thank you. Viola.
