    1. [ALBERTA] Post 1901 Census - Town Hall Meetings
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. Christmas is over and we are now into the new year -- 2002. Time to get back to work. The next Town Hall meetings are coming up on 7, 9, and 11 January in Halifax, Toronto, and Montreal respectively. Not much time left. While I have been advised of some participants scheduled for these meetings, there are certainly others that I am not aware of. It would be appreciated if anyone scheduled to speak or attend these meetings would please advise me. >From the Ottawa meetings it is obvious that Statistics Canada has directed Environics to be on the lookout for certain things. Questions asked by the moderator show that they are looking for any indication that knowledge Census records would be released after 92 years will lessen individuals participation in Census, or lessen their trust in Statistics Canada in general. Presentations to the Town Hall meetings should include wording that would show just the opposite -- participation in Census and trust in Statistics Canada would increase with knowledge of eventual release of Census records. Chief Statistician Dr. Ivan Fellegi has changed the focus of his attack on our efforts from the strictly legal (because he knows he would lose), to one of a fear of lessening the integrity of the statistical agency. He still insists on promoting the non-existant 'promise' of never-ending confidentiality even though he has been unable to produce any documented evidence of it. Our counter to their insistance there is a 'promise' is to ask them to produce evidence of it. The legislation quoted by them certainly does not contain any 'promise' that confidentiality of Census will never end. Another main thrust of the Town Hall meetings is to promote the so-called 'Compromise Solution'. Copies of this 'compromise' were made available to all attending the Ottawa meeting and it is expected that this will be repeated at all upcoming meetings. Every speaker at the Ottawa meeting was asked if the 'compromise' was something they could support. Every speaker rejected it. To see a copy of this 'compromise', and my critique of it, visit my column regarding it at http://globalgazette.net/gazce/gazce74.htm After reading the 'compromise' please send me your comments regarding it. Please make your comments relevant to the 'compromise' suggested rather than to my critique. I will be sending many of these to Environics and Statistics Canada. My intent at this time would be to include senders names (unless requested not to) but not email or snail mail addresses. Further reports of the Ottawa Town Hall meeting and a critique of Dr. Ivan Fellegi's presentation to the Senate Committee is in my column at http://globalgazette.net/gazce/gazce75.htm The full schedule of Town Hall meetings, and information regarding how to register as a speaker or to attend as part of the audience, is at the Environics Research Group website at http://erg.environics.net/ Obtaining information regarding the Town Hall meetings is relatively simple -- that is available from those who request to participate or attend, and who give us reports on what has taken place. Getting information regarding what takes place in the Focus Group studies that follow each Town Hall meeting is quite another thing. Participants in the Focus Groups do not apply or volunteer as is the case for the Town Hall meetings -- they are chosen at random through telephone polls and must meet certain criteria to be accepted. We know little about the criteria, or about information given and questions asked of participants. We would appreciate anyone participating in these Focus Groups letting us know what takes place in them. We cannot stress enough the importance of participating in these Town Hall meetings. The worst thing we can do is have any of these meetings take place without our presence. Please keep us up to date on what happens at these meetings. Gordon A. 1. [ALBERTA] MOREAU
    2. Happy New Year from a new lister. I am searching for the family of my MOREAU ancestors. Thomas Moreau and his wife Ursule Renaud dit Deslauriers and children Micheal) Mitchel), Joseph and Alexander were enumerated in the 1900 Federal census of Anaconda, Montana, USA but they were not ther in the 1910 census. Ursule was in "Alberta" in 1919 according to her brother's obituary. I have no idea where they might have been in Alberta or Thomas's occupation. It is possible that they lived out their lives there. I will be most grateful for any information or suggestions that will assist me in finding this MOREAU family. TIA John

My family on my mother's side originate from the St. Austell area of Cornwall. My mother was Pamela Elizabeth Liddicoat, and she had 2 sisters:- Jocelyne Francis, and Patricia Mary. My grandfather was Frederick Stanley Liddicoat, and my Grandmother was Frances Smith. I am in the process of starting a family tree relating to this side of my bloodlines, and am beginning to make progress. I am aware that members of the Liddicoat tribe moved to South America in the 1880's, also some went to Australia (because they drank too much), and I believe that a branch also went to South Africa. At present I have a rough family tree which at present goes toward 1772, however I need to access more information to firm up on the lineage. I have a sister, and there are 7 other cousins from the other sisters of my mother. Frederick Stanley was envolved in the China clay industry, and we have had family in foundry, mining, and shipping. I hope this may be a starter for you and help you identify if we have a common ancester. Take care and have fun, Hope to hear from you soon. Will

    3. I just thought I'd add something to this.... Having money didn't save people from starvation or the elements. In 1979, The owner of "The Lakeside Leader" from Slave Lake, Alberta (who also owned the weekly in High Prairie) invited me to help cover the story of moving a very old, dilapidated cabin from out of the bush located between Grouard and McLennan. We were there to watch and document the dismantling of the building by archaeology students. The quality of the furnishings was decent... They were well made and cared for. What REALLY caught our attention was when they started dismantling the logs... They were chinked with paper money! The largest bill was a $10. There was a few thousand dollars (face value). The bills had no numismatic value because of water and sap stains and much of it had been gnawed by rodents but what caught my attention was the misery the cabin owners had gone through to survive... They used a small fortune (by the standards of those times) to stop the cold from freezing them. Their money couldn't buy them the luxury of heat! An old brittle journal (diary) was found. Within the pages was finding the baby frozen in the morning. I swear I could see the dried tears on the page. I asked the leader of the archaeologists if I could have one of the worst bills as a momento of this experience. He offered me one of the better bills but I refused.... so he gave me an old, partly eaten bill. I kept it in my dictionary for a couple of months then had it framed... To remind me what cold was all about... to remind me of what they endured. I just wanted to add that a diver once found one home-made crutch at the west end of Lesser Slave Lake. It was tied with sinew and had an old broken hammer-head as a pick in the bottom so the user could grip the ice. A couple of old-timers told me that there used to be an old, one legged fisherman that used to spear fish through the ice and who apparently fell through the ice and was never found. This memory means more to me today than it did then because I now have only one leg and spend most of my time in a wheelchair. I couldn't imagine trying to feed my family under those conditions! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Viola Seward" <olla@mercury.i29.net> To: <METISGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 31, 2001 1:33 PM Subject: [METISGEN-L] O.t. 2. Muriel Davidson
    3. To all:- A New Year -- 2002 -- brings us visions of hope, family, dreams that have come true -- as a former Maritimer I wish to share views of many!!! 2003 is a big year in the hearts of many -- celebration of the 250th anniversary of our ancestors founding of Lunenburg and area. To advertise the celebration, Bryan Keddy has SONS Radio -- Sail On Nova Scotia -- read on from a previous post:- If YOU have not tuned in as yet, here is the site address Sail on Nova Scotia Radio - http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/bryanfkeddy/SONS.html You will find a page with the 2003 logo, and follow instructions to sign on. One Christmas song I really liked was "Christmas in Canada", sung by Wilf Carter in the 1940s. If you like the oldies, in Gaelic and German (the tapestry of Nova Scotia) you will sooner or later hear it played. The next paragraph is from Bryan:- SONS just keeps getting better and better results everyday - presently at #57 on country chart, #92 on folk chart, # 100 on oldies chart - and #25 of all stations on similar 3 charts.....have noticed a decrease in listening over the past couple of days since the Christmas Show - much expected - yet extremely happy with over 565 listeners in December, 131 presets, for 371 hours of listening..... bringing the total listening hours to 980 since inception in August....and would be nice to break the 1,000 hour mark in 2001. St. John's Anglican Church in Lunenburg was part of the 2003 plans, check my homepage http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/ Click on Nova Scotian Links, scroll down to HELP RESTORE ST. JOHN'S ANGLICAN - LUNENBURG Prints of the church are available. On the same page are two tributes -- on main page, scroll to bottom Canada/United Tribute re Sept. 11, 2001 at the left. At the right is a tribute -- a POPPY -- in memory of Canadians! http://www.stemnet.nf.ca/monuments/on/bramont1.htm At the same page, click on the Canadian flag logo to view Post-1901 census pages -- another hopeful item "on the wish list" for 2003. Contact YOUR Member of Parliament or Senator -- please send copies to me for posting by Gordon Watts -- see addresses below. Personally, I am counting the hours until I get back Down Home in the New Year -- natives never quite leave -- often return in thought! Happy New Year 2002 to all! Muriel M. With his mother and Baba. Nicholas was already here in Canada. It is stated that he was a founding parishiner of the ST. Michael RC church in 1896. And Justyna and her mother came to canada in 1903 or there abouts, and stopped in Manitoba, somewhere location unknown, and she gave birth to a daughter, Annie. If you have any other information, or leads I would love to hear about it. I am trying to find out more about my grandfather, and his birth place. Which is like finding a needle in a haystack! Ustena came in circa 1903 with my grandfather, and Her mother. They stopped in Manitoba. where she gave birth to a girl, named Annie. There is a small story about Annie in the St. Michael books at the Alberta Provincial Archives.
