I got a list of all Robert Hughes's from Canadian Forces killed in WW1, this I got from the War Graves Commission. There is a Robert Hughes on the list from Wales, but the trouble is it shows he was killed in June, a month before you say he enlisted?? Can send you more info.. 1. [ALBERTA] Post 1901 Census -- Response from Environics
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. In previous posts I copied information regarding certain events that had taken place in regards to the ongoing Town Hall Meetings and Focus Groups relating to access of Historic Census records. I sent a complaint regarding those events to Statistics Canada who forwarded it to Environics for their response. Today I received a response from Environics. I am assured that references to the 'promise' and the presentation of the 'compromise solution' at these proceedings is not a matter of the belief of the moderator and his 'pushing' these items. Part of the mandate for these proceeding was to obtain opinions regarding the 'promise' and the 'compromise solution' or 'third option' and in so doing Environics is simply fulfilling their contract. They are most certainly obtaining opinions regarding them -- mostly negative. While there may still be some misunderstanding regarding what took place at a Focus Group where an individual was excluded from participation, presumably because of membership in a genealogy society, I am hopeful that this can be amicably resolved, and may be before you read this message. I am assured that there have indeed been "individuals who are, or have been, involved in genealogy in these sessions and that the discussion in these sessions have benefitted from their points of view." I am advised that while certain persons have been invited by Environics to participate in the meetings, they indicated that they are "interested in hearing from anyone, with any point of view, on this subject. We thought it would be beneficial to the process to hear from those involved in privacy issues and academic research, so we invited a number of people in these areas to attend these sessions to give us their point of view. We are interested in hearing the views of these people, but we are not asking them to take sides." They further indicated that they have not solicited participation from anyone as an 'opponent' of the release of the records in question. I am, for the most part, satisfied with their explanations. My apologies to the lists for the frequency of my posts lately, but there is a lot happening at the moment. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [ALBERTA] Post 1901 Census -- 'Compromise solution' on line -- and more
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. As of this morning the so-called 'Compromise Solution' being pushed by Statistics Canada at the Town Hall meetings is now accessible on the Post 1901 Census Project website located at the URL following my signature. I would encourage all to have a look at it -- particularly those intending to attend one of the Town Hall meetings. The various sections of this document have links to my critiques of those sections. It includes a summary of my assessment of the 'compromise'. The terms of this 'compromise' are so restrictive as to be little better than no access at all. Reports and presentations from those attending the Town Hall meetings are being added as fast as I receive them and am able to prepare the webpages. Ottawa, Halifax and Toronto are up now but I have not received reports from all presenters. Although those attending meetings are advised that the Environics website will be updated within 24 hours of the meetings, that does not appear to be happening. No reports for Montreal or Fredericton have yet been posted. Charlottetown should be posted on their website (http://erg.environics.net/) tomorrow. We shall see. The meeting for St. John's is scheduled for tomorrow. Hopefully the snow storms will be over and done with by the time of the meetings. I look forward to receiving reports on those meetings. Meetings coming up next week are for Winnipeg, Regina, and Edmonton on the 23rd, 25th and 28th respectively. I still have a lot of blanks on my list of those making presentations. If you have not done so already, let me know if you are intending to attend or make a presentation. I look forward to receiving your reports and presentations following each meeting. The Vancouver meeting to be held on 30 January (rescheduled without known notice from 4 February). Along with some that are travelling some distance to attend, I will be making a presentation at the evening session. None of these, however, will have travelled as far as someone from Virginia who travelled 900 miles/km (?) to make a presentation at the meeting in Fredericton, NB. I will be attending both sessions of the Vancouver meeing and look forward to meeting many of those who I have had email correspondence with. For those unable to attend meetings, Statistics Canada has advised that written submissions will be accepted by Environics. Send them to censusconsultations@environics.ca . Any such submissions should be received by Environics no later than the end of January. Terms of their contract require their report to be submitted to Statistics Canada by 15 February 2002. With all that is happening at this time I am afraid that my updating of the MP and Senator Scoreboards is taking a back seat. I have a few changes to add at this time and will get at those as soon as I am able. In the meantime, letters to our government representative are still required, asking for their support. Keep your messages polite and respectful. Some may have responded with a positive response that does not yet show up on the Scoreboard. Senator Cools is one of those who have responded with an expression of support yet shown on the Scoreboard. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
