Grandma said he was born 2 Jun 1894 in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. Hoping to "find" him before my 83 year old mother dies. Thanx

    1. [ALBERTA] Help - Need suggestions on where to find records for Strathcona/Edmonton immigrants
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: WENTLAND, WENDLAND, VENTLAND, WAHL Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TNC.2ACI/1949 Message Board Post: I am looking for any suggestions on where I might look to find records documenting my grandparent's & father's time in Alberta because I don't know what might be available or where. Any suggestions appreciated. Specifically, I'm interested in any paperwork that might exist documenting: -- their entry into Canada (1913 & 1916), -- any Strathcona/Edmonton Lutheran church records (1913-1919) -- any Lutheran baptismal certificates (1917 & 1919) -- any Strathcona area land records especially homestead records (1913 or 14 & 1917), -- any newspapers that might mention newcomers (1913 & 1916), -- any information about Edmonton/Strathcona slaugther houses, or -- any records about the Germans from Russia. My grandparents came to Alberta from Zhitomir, Russia and settled in the Edmonton area. They were German Lutherans. My father (Alfred WENDLAND) and my aunt (Elfrieda WENDLAND) were born in Strathcona (I have a copy of his birth registration - 22 December 1917 - and the informant was a Rev W. WAHL). My grandfather, Gustav WENDLAND, came in 1913. He left via Hamburg Germany in March of 1913, passed through Ellis Island, then traveled to Edmonton, settling in Strathcona. He found a job at the slaughter house and homesteaded a 120 acre farm where he grew potatoes. He homesteaded an additional 120 acres after the birth of his son. I'm not sure the land ever became his... my dad says that Grampa sold the potato crop prior to leaving and harvested the crop early right before a large freeze that wiped out all the rest of the potatoes in the area... but he doesn't mention selling any land. When he entered the US in October 1919, his paperwork listed his name as Gustave WENTLAND. My grandmother came in 1916 to join him. She arrived in NY harbor and traveled to Alberta by train. Her passport says: "The bearer of this passport peasant woman Emilia VENTLAND going in America" and is dated Oofa 13 September 1916 (The French version spelled her name Emilie VENTLAND.) Her name was spelled Emilea WENTLAND on her entry papers when she emigrated to the US October 24, 1919, after the birth of her daughter, Elfrieda (March 3, 1919) who had chronic ear infections. (The doctor advised removing to a warmer climate.) Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help. Joanne Turner Virginia, USA
