    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Hi Sue. Thanks for your report. I am happy to see the attendence at the Edmonton meetings and hope that Vancouver can even outdo your record. We shall see. I would very much like a copy of your presentation so that I can place it on the Post 1901 Census Project website. Thanks to all for their support. Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en français http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barnsley, Sue" <sbarnsle@cha.ab.ca> To: <CANADA-CENSUS-CAMPAIGN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 29, 2002 7:05 AM Subject: [CCC] RE: CANADA-CENSUS-CAMPAIGN-D Digest V02 #31 Edmonton did well last night. 110 at the afternoon session and 105 at the evening session. The message was very clear. Statistics Canada has no right messing with our census records. Those records belong to the people of this country, they are part of our heritage, our history. Since when was it the mandate of Stats Can to dictate to the National Archives what records would be available. Someone likened them unto the USSR as being repressive and dictatorial. Needless to say, the overwhelming consensus to the 'compromise', or option as it is now being called, is 'stuff it'. One thing that did bother me last night, was the moderator, very leading in the questions, putting words in your mouth. For our Vancouver group, just be careful and watch each and every word that you say. Do not let the moderator lead you. Anyway, we had 3 main presentations in the evening and the rest of the time was open to the public. Boy, did they take advantage. One after another blasted Stats Can for meddling in our history. Someone asked who had written the Option, and one young man, said it was full of bureaucratic drivel and would have been sent back in any other organization to be rewritten. People out here are passionate about the census records, with many being descentants of Ukraine and other Eastern block nations most of whom arrived after the 1901 census. They demanded access to the census records. Someone suggested that 92 years was too long and that they should consider 80 years as the length of time. If you want more information, let me know. I will be happy to post my own presentation as well. Gordon, it is up to your group out in Vancouver, they got more than they bargained for here in Edmonton. Make it clear, very clear to them. 2. List Administrator
    3. Ladies and Gentlemen on the Alberta list, please, please clear out your mail boxes every now and again. The list is set up to only allow 3 bounces per subscriber, then they either get unsubbed by Rootsweb or your list administrator. That's me. I am getting a lot of bounces lately for mailboxes that are too full - exceed their storage allocation. If I get these on a Thursday or Friday, I usually give some grace days and hope that the owners read their mail and clear out the mail box. If this happens on a Monday, I unsub them after 3 bounces. If you go on holidays, please unsub or those on the list, subscribe to digest, depending on the length of the absence. All mail goes to the archives, you can allways catch up later. The bounces clog up the system, Rootsweb and mine. Thank you, Ines

    1. [ALBERTA] Post 1901 Census - Town Hall meetings
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. This week finds the end of the Town Hall meetings with the meeting in Edmonton Monday, and the one in Vancouver on Wednesday. We hope that the weather we have been having recently will not prevent a good turnout for both meetings. The contract Environics has with Statistics Canada calls for seating for 100. It would be nice to see these meetings wind up with standing room only. Attendence at a few of the meetings has been disappointing. I will be attending both sessions of the Vancouver meetings, and will be speaking at the evening session. I look forward to meeting several supporters of access that I have corresponded with but have not yet met. I still look to receive reports from observers on how the meetings have been going, and copies of submissions from presenters so that they can be added to the Post !901 Census Project website. Thanks to all for your support. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [ALBERTA] Post 1901 Census -- Edmonton Journal
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. My thanks to Ian Holmes, president of the Alberta Genealogical Society for sending me scans of an article by Duncan Thorne that appeared on page A7 the Edmonton Journal of Sunday 27 January 2002. This is an excellent article of about 1/2 page and makes mention of a number of people that have been active in our campaign to regain access to Historic Census -- Lucy McRae, Ian Holmes and Bill Waiser. For a change, this article does not just quote representatives of StatCan and repeat their non-existant 'promise'. It presents our side of the issue and mentions our upcoming Court action to obtain a writ of mandamus to obtain release of the 1906 Census records. All in all, I would consider it to be a well balanced article. I have not as yet been able to locate the article on the website of the Edmonton Journal, but hope that it will be placed online. We would like to see more articles of this caliber. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
