My Dad, Alston Branscomb [b. 1917], raised in Midway, Alabama (Bullock Co./formerly Barbour Co.), was taught by Mrs. ELIZABETH H. ORR in the 1st and 2nd grades [around 1923-1924]. The 1920 Union Springs census shows an Elizabeth H. Orr, Grammar School Teacher, age 53, boarding on North Prairie Street with the ELIZABETH & WM. C. ELLIS [Merchant, Dry Goods Store] family. She was listed as Aunt. Also living with them was Elizabeth Ellis's mother, MARTHA "Mattie" H. THOMAS, 70. As both have an 'H' & were born in Georgia, as were their parents, it is possible Martha H. might be Elizabeth H. Orr's sister. A newspaper reference from The Montgomery Advertiser, dated 1922-06-22, shows that "Mrs. Orr came from Union Springs, Alabama, to teach in Midway, Alabama". We have a photo of her. The 1930 Midway census lists Elizabeth Orr, widowed, having married at age 24, & a Public School Teacher, boarding with Annie Alley. However, she is shown as age 48, born in Alabama, as were her parents. A mystery! I would like to learn the Christian name of her husband, whom she would have married in abt. 1906. Alston graduated from Bullock County High School in 1935. He attended the University of Alabama from 1935 until 1940. He recalls: "Although my contacts with Mrs. Orr were limited through Junior & Senior High School, I would stop by the home in Union Springs, where she lived after her retirement, for a brief visit on my way home to Midway from the University of Alabama." According to the Ancestry.com. Alabama Deaths record, an Elizabeth H. Orr died in April, 1944 in Bullock Co. Mrs. Orr might be buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Union Springs, Ala. in one of the Orr lots or in an Ellis lot. Does anyone have information on Mrs. E. H. Orr? or a connected Orr or Ellis family? Is there someone willing to have a look for Mrs. Elizabeth H. Orr's grave in the Oakhill Cemetery & provide me with the details? I would certainly appreciate hearing from you. This information would mean a great deal to my 94 year old father. Eugenia B. He was called from his bed at night by some one outside, and was shot down dead at his door by an unknown person. Suspicion rests upon one of his own negroes and a white boy named Bailey, lately discharged from employment by Mr. Orr.
