Feb 22, 1847; is the son of Jonas and Nancy (Townsend) Jenkins, and grandson of Samuel and Polly Ann (Barnett) Townsend, of Bullock county, Ala; J.E. Jenkins' parents came early in life to Ala. from N.C.; he was educated in the common schools of Bullock county; is engaged in farming; has held no office except justice of peace, and representative from Bullock county in the Legislature of 1911. He was a Confederate soldier in Co. I, 17th Ala. Inf. Regt., Canty's Brigade, Walthall's division, Stewart's Corps, Army of the Tennessee. He is a Democrat; a Baptist; and a Mason. His present wife, to whom he was married Oct. 13, 1900, at Andulusia, was Lillie Cogdell, daughter of Charles and Mary (Gilmore) Cogdell of Inverness, Ala.
