In Feb. 1818 Conecuh County was formed and for a time our courthouse was Evergreen but in 1819 our county became Henry and our seat was Richmond near Willign Church at Napier Field. Richmond continued as the Dale County courthouse after its formation in 1824 bur Daleville became the court center in 1828. This new county was named for Sam Dale, the hero of the famous canoe fight and, likewise its county seat. In 1841 Coffee County was formed with Wellborn as its seat of government and Geneva County territory was divided for the first time. The part east of Choctawhatchie River remained in Dale Countywhile west of the river went to Coffee County. It is interesting to notice that a person in Geneva attended court in Wellobrn near Damascus church while a citizen oe Uunola went to Daleville until 1845 when Newton became the county sear and remained so until 1871 when it was moved to Ozark. In 1852 Wellborn was burned and Elba became the captial of Coffee county. On December 26, 1868 Geneva County was established with its present boundaries except Beats one and two at Taylor and Big Creek which went to Houston County at its formation in 1903. This accounts for the fact that our county has no beats one and two since both are in Houston County. Geneva was named for its chief town which also became its county seat named for its first postmaster, Henry Yonge, who was a native of Geneva, Switzerland. It is most interesting to notice that our county has belonged to the Indians, Fench, Englis, Spanish, Confederates, Amercans and has been part of Florida, Georgia, Mississipppi and Alabama and has been in teh counties of Washington, Baldwin, Monroe, Conecuh, Henry Dale and Coffee. What land has had a more checkered existance. ***This was sent to me. I think they are speaking of Henry County am I right? Margie
