(spelled HELMES at the start of the article, HELMS later in the article) Source: Alabama Official and Statistical Register, 1911, page 108 Legislative Department, Crenshaw County ISAAC FRANKLIN HELMES, or Rutledge, Ala. was born at Buena Vista, Marion county, Ga. Jan 20, 1859, and is the son of Hosea and Sarah (Hendrix) Helms, the former of Monroe, Union Co, N.C., the latter of Buena Vista, Ga; and the grandson of Andrew and Delilah Helms of Monroe, N.C., and of Isaac Franklin and Sarah Hendrix, of Buena Vista, Ga. Both great grandfathers were Revolutionary soldiers, Hosea Helms served as a private in the Confederate Army. He lived at Rutledge, Ala. at the time of his death. Isaac F. Helms received his education in the common schools at Leon, Ala. and in the Baptist High School of Greenville, Ala. He was a teacher and farmer for fifteen years, and then a farmer exclusively. He was a Justice of the Peace from 1894 to 1898; has been a member of the County School Board for several years;; was a member of the Democratic Executive Committee of Crenshaw county from 1886 to 1892; after this he was a member of the People's Party county committee for six years, and since then has again been with the Democrats. He is a Baptist and a Mason. He was married Feb 25, 1886, near Rutledge, Ala. to Debbie Ann Swanner, the daughter of William and Charlotte (Clancy) Swanner, of Rutledge, Ala. and the granddaughter of Dr. Clancy, who lived a number of years at Rutledge.
