Source: Alabama Official and Statistical Register, 1911, page 86-87 Legislative Department, Twenty-fourth District, Barbour County, Senator ROBERT MOULTHROP, of Eufaula, Ala. was born April 29, 1865 in a small cottage on the east side of the Chattahoochee river in Quitman county, Ga. and is the son of Robert Bassett and Sarah Adeline (Daniel) Moulthrop, and the grandson of Merritt and Mary Bassett Moulthrop, and of Chelsey C. and Ann (Simmons) Daniel, the latter from Stateboro, Ga. and the former from North Haven, Conn. Robert Bassett Moulthrop, a native of North Haven, Conn. had a varied career. Left an orphan at the age of seven years. At fourteen he took sail as a cabin boy and went around Cape Horn. He was later engaged in many enterprises, but in 1862 came south under the contract to manufacture brick with which to build the bridge of the Central Railroad of Georgia over the Chattahoochee River at Eufaula. He was a cripple, which exempted him from service in the army. Senator Moulthrop was educated in the common schools at Eufaula, and at Pio Nono College, Macon, Ga. 1878-1880, but did not graduate. He is at present a brick manufacturer in which business he has been actively engaged from 1880 to 1902. He served as alderman of the city of Eufaula, July 1, 1894 to 1896. July, 1898-July 1900 and has been a member of the city board of education for many years. He is a Democrat and is a member of the city executive committee of Eufaula. He is a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church, a Mason, and a Knight Templar. On Sept 12, 1883, at Macon, Ga. he was married to Rachel Catherine, daughter of Matthew and Martha E. (Steadham) Moss, Edgefield, S.C. Matthew Moss was killed in Virginia as a private Confederate soldier, July 12, 1864.
