I have abstracted Companies A (none), B, G, I, and K from the following list, since these companies were formed from southeast AL counties. Source: Alabama Genealogical Society Magazine, Vol. 2, No. 1, January 1968 Confederate Dead Buried at Madison, Wisconsin The Following is a list of Confederate dead buried in the Confederate Cemetery at Madison, Wisconsin who belonged to the First Regiment Alabama Volunteers, C.S.A., with date of death in 1862 and Company. The list was compiled by Edward Young McMorries, who later received a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama and became a college president. Mr. McMorries was an organizing member of the Perote Guards, of Perote, Pike County, Alabama now in Bullock County. Two years later, April 1, 1861, the Perote Guards was mustered into the service of the Confederacy and became Company G, 1st Alabama Regiment, C.S.A. At the time these men were dying in Prison at Madison, Wisonsin, Mr. McMorries was a prisoner of war at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois. Captured in Apr 1862, w/ many sick from exposure, a larger number would die at Camp Randall within a few weeks after arrival; the commisioned officers were held at Johnson's Island, in Lake Erie, near Sandusky, Oh.
