    1. [Rootsweb ALBARBOU] Eufaula Rifles, Co. G, 2nd Alabama Regiment/ALSTON
    2. Eugenia
    3. Earlier, Delilah Evans generously shared online: ROSTER OF EUFAULA RIFLES, CO. G., 2ND ALABAMA REGIMENT from HISTORY OF BARBOUR COUNTY, ALABAMA by Lewy Dorman. I responded that I was interested in the reference to: PRIVATE:| ALSTON, R.A. (dead) -- and wondered whose son he was? Since then, I have come across a most interesting reference article on the Eufaula Tribune webpage [05/01/2007] that ties in with this topic. Eufaulians 'Remember the Maine' http://www.zwire.com/site/index.cfm?newsid=18283474&BRD=2235&PAG=461&dept_id=439676&rfi=8 "When the U. S. battleship Maine mysteriously blew up in the harbor of Havana, Cuba, Feb. 15, 1898, the stage was set for war. In the explosion (the actual cause of which may have been a boiler room accident), 260 U.S. sailors were killed. Americans were enraged, and Barbour countians were no exception..............." According to Barbour County historian Lewy Dorman,"The Eufaula Rifles became Company G, 2nd Alabama Infantry Regiment and lost two men to typhoid: Private Robert Alston from the Batesville community and Private W. E. Rollins.............." [Refer to Roster of Eufaula Rifles below.] Private R. A. Alston (dead) is ROBERT [Norwood] ALSTON, the son of Florence Hudson & WILLIAM AUGUSTUS ALSTON, son of Rebecca Jane Norwood & JAMES ASBURY ALSTON. "Robert Norwood Alston enlisted in Co. G, 2nd Alabama Regiment, Spanish War, and died at Miami of fever." May 05,1909 Eufaula newspaper article : 'End Comes to Beloved Woman of Eufaula' "Mrs. R. J. Alston, died at her home one mile north of the city yesterday......." Also living in the Eufaula/Comer/Batesville/Fort Browder/Spring Hill/Cowikee area were her other sons: JOSEPH ALEXANDER ALSTON ,who "was accidentally killed in Eufaula in Nov., 1887", JAMES MERRIMAN ALSTON (Mary Eugenia Turman), JOHN MANSON ALSTON (Willie B., daughter of Rev. A. J. Briggs), and their cousin, AUGUSTUS HOLMES ALSTON, who was Supernumerary Judge for the State of AL. I have a great deal of information on these Alstons who moved from GA to AL. in the mid-1800s and would like to correspond with anyone who is interested in these families. 3. Hi, I thought you might like to see this. This was in a 1898 Eufaula Tribune paper Barbara Eufaulians were eager to support the troops. Bella Oppenheimer (granddaughter of dry goods merchant David G. Stern) and Mary Ellen Vaughan (daughter of clothing store owner Noel Vaughan) raised money to buy ice and tobacco for the men at Mobile. Once they reached Mobile, the Eufaula Rifles became Company G, 2nd Alabama Infantry Regiment. Captain Eugene H. Graves replaced Captain Lucius Barr, who resigned because of business commitments. First Lieutenant Edgar S. Mitchell, a Eufaula dentist, and Second Lieutenant Allen M. Brown were the company's other officers. William T. Sheehan became First Sergeant, and Arthur C. Flewellen was Quartermaster Sergeant BARBARA >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [Rootsweb ALBARBOU] JOHN VAUGHN >Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2006 10:32:47 EDT > >Hello~ The Anna Vaughn with the milinary shop was my GGrandmother. 3. There are two courthouses in Barbour County--one in Clayton and one in Eufaula. The Eufaula Courthouse is located on 303 E. Broad Street. The Probate Office is directly to the left when you enter the front door on the first floor. The telephone number is 334-687-1530. The Clayton Courthouse is located at 113 Court Square. To get to the Probate Office, you go inside the main foyer and up the ramp to the right. The Probate Office is the first door to the right on the first floor. The phone number is 334 775-8371. Ask the clerks for help in finding info. There are a lot of nice people who work in both Probate offices. doc ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patsy" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 23, 2007 11:15 AM Subject: [Rootsweb ALBARBOU] PROBATE > Where can I find Probate information > > Thanks
