    2. Maybe not genealogical lines, but found on one website as part of the USGENWEB for Barbour Co, if I remember rightly, the song "Amazing Grace" played in the background. I believe it was on a site having to do with cemetery listings I would like very much to find a cd or dvd with the music for the song on it. I have heard other "hymn" music on other websites, but none have the "Amazing Grace" song. I have tried contacting people involved with Barbour Co. but have not been able to get a reply. 1. [Rootsweb ALBARBOU] SCRUSE and SCREWS in Barbour County, Alabama
    2. Does anyone have any information on the family tree of Katherine JACKSON, the mother of the singer Michael JACKSON? According to Katherine's Wikipedia article she was born in Barbour County, Alabama. Her maiden name was SCRUSE or SCREWS. As part of my one-name study into the surname CRUSE I have been tracing an English Cruse line which originated in Urchfont, Wiltshire in the 1600s. In one branch of the family the spelling changed to SCRUSE, and this line seems to account for virtually all the SCRUSES who appear in the English civil registration indexes. I wondered if there might perhaps be any connection with the SCRUSES in the JACKSON family. I live in England and am not very familiar with American research. An English Scruse has recently joined my DNA project and I'd love to be able to locate a Scruse in America to take the DNA test as well. 2. Donna Wall
    3. Turner "Hot Dog Man" Cook March 10, 1924- April 3, 2008 COLUMBUS, GA— Turner "Hot Dog Man" Cook, 84, of Columbus died April 3, 2008 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronald Earles and the Rev. John Knighton officiating. Burial will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Sonny Hall, James Cook, Kenneth Cook, Mike Merritt, Ronnie Earles and Gary O'Neal. Visitation will be held Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA. Mr. Cook was born March 10, 1924 in Barbour County, AL., the son of the late Bessie M. Johnson Cook and Henry T. Cook. Mr. Cook retired from Fleming Foods in June of 1985 at the age of 62. Two weeks later, he joined his son to become the first hot dog vendor in Columbus, GA. The Hot Dog Man's New York style cart could be seen each day, rain or shine, on Broadway between 11th and 12th Streets. Having a love for people, this was the perfect "job" for him. His homemade chili made by his wife, Sis was a staple with the downtown crowd. At the age of 83, he was working part time with his son Roy at Cook's Place until cancer got its grip on him. He fought a long hard battle but eventually gave in to God's calling to "come home". He would share his faith with anyone that would listen and even those that wouldn't. He was saved at the age of 12 and steadfastly held on to his Christianity until he took his last breath. Columbus has lost not only a gentleman, but also a gentle man. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Virginia Driggers Cook of Columbus; a daughter, Martha C. Earles and husband Ronald of Troy, AL.; son, Roy Cook and wife Teresa of Columbus; grandchildren, Ronnie Earles and wife Tamara of Auburn, AL. and Tracy Britt of Ladonia, AL.; three great grandchildren, Callie, Camilla and Emma Claire Earles, all of Auburn, AL. Those who wish may sign the online guest registry at www.mcmullenfuneralhome.com. Published in the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer on 4/4/2008.

    3. Yes, you are so right. I have fussed with our local library director for withdrawing history books that no longer have the circulation of modern fiction or whatever. But many of those histories are one of a kinds that can never be replaced. Her argument is that they are a public library and not a research library. I insist every library is a research library to some extent. The bibliographies of those older histories are often more valuable than the contents. I ask if she would withdraw a genealogy book (knowing she was a genealogist, Ha) and she replied "Heavens No!" But they still just don't get it. In this case I'm not sure the survey was ever done in Barbour County Al....and would like to know if there is any hope. Thanks for your interest. -bob ----- Original Message ----- From: "Grant Johnston" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, November 09, 2007 8:35 PM Subject: Re: [Rootsweb ALBARBOU] ALBARBOU Digest, Vol 2, Issue 48 > On Nov 2, 2007 11:00 PM, <[email protected]> wrote: >> >> 1. Each booklet was the original typed pages put together in a 3-ring folder. Stamped inside the cover was a library name from Austin, TX. The person selling them said they were purchased at a 'yard sale' at the library. I understand libraries have limited space and must dispose of old books to make room for new ones.. It is unfortunate but some people, even librarian's, might not realise the value of a limited edition local book. In some libraries WPA records were just taking up space that could be used for the latest book on the NY Times best seller list.. I gave the two books I got to a genealogy libraries in the county they came from. Hopefully, they are still there, taking up space. Grant Johnston, Chico, CA
